Monsters Inc Sequel in November 2012

Pixar isn’t just double dipping their pool of non-stop success with Toy Story and Cars, but now another alum will get the sequel treatment.

Monsters Inc.

Film School Rejects says:

Nine years after the hugely successful Pete Docter directed Monsters, Inc. hit theaters, new chairman of Walt Disney Studios Rich Ross announced a second installment slated for November 2012 at a media event on Thursday.

I often worry about sequels to complete stories.

I know that Pixar wants to monopolize on their existing properties, and for the most part I am happy to see them. Toy Story 3 looks great, and Cars 2 has potential (I know its not popular, but I love it) but one of the things that make most Pixar films so great is its complete story.

Where there is potential for more story, it works. But something like Monsters Inc was a complete story. The problem solved, power crisis averted, and their world view was shattered and replaced with a new one.

Where is the sequel story?

I hold my anticipation on this until I hear more.

  1. I agree that while Monsters Inc. was great (especially the bloopers reel at the end) it was a complete story. Unless you do something crazy like skip several years into the future and the crew from Monsters Inc. has learned that using laughter instead of fear actually had a long term but unknown ill side effect which would lead to an energy crisis hindered by the catch22 that laughter hurts them but fear hurts the kids. But that would be a stretch.

  2. Loved Cars, wasn’t a fan of Monsters Inc.

Cars had room to continue, but as you said, Monsters Inc was pretty much tied up. You can show other kids or other monsters, but the story as a whole wasn’t that interesting to begin with.

Where is the sequel to Pixar’s best movie, The Incredibles, which was left wide open for a sequel?
