The Hobbit Casting Kicks off with Mostly Dwarves

With the casting of the lead Hobbit himself Bilbo Baggins, Martin Freeman is not the only confirmed new cast member.

TheOneRing.net has a list of some predominate roles already with actors set to play them.

Martin Freeman is set to play Bilbo Baggins, the adventurous Hobbit whose adventures and discovery of the One Ring leads the story up to The Lord of the Rings.

Richard Armitage (MI-5 and Captain America: The First Avenger) will play Thorin Oakenshield, leader of the Company of Dwarves which sets off to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from a thieving dragon. Aidan Turner (Being Human) and Rob Kazinsky (EastEnders) will play Kili and Fili, members of the Company of Dwarves. Graham McTavish (Secretariat) will play Dwalin, John Callen (Power Rangers Jungle Fury) will play Oin; Stephen Hunter (All Saints) will play Bombur, and Mark Hadlow (King Kong) plays Dori, while Peter Hambleton (The Strip) will play Gloin.

I cannot even begin to discuss the casting outside of Bilbo Baggins.

I think Freeman will be brilliant in the role and since hearing he was considered I couldn’t picture anyone else. So excited that they finalized his role recently.

More importantly that there IS this many names attached gives me great joy that this proposed filming in February is not a myth and that the ball is most certainly rolling.

The Hobbit is happening! We still don’t know where exactly, but it IS happening!

  1. I wonder if these actors realize when they sign on for these roles they’ve chosen a future full of signings at conventions. Freeman will now have fans from the Hobbit, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Office, and the couple roles he’s had in Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright films.

Still, excellent choice! Looks the part and I really enjoyed him in HHGTTG and of course the Office. I think this will probably get him more international recognition. HHGTTG is pretty popular, but only among certain crowds.

    1. You probably won’t see him as Gimli. He had a lot of problems that he sucked up to play the part in LotR but it was doing murder to his alergies.

  2. Comingsoon has an article stating that the protest has been called off. But nothing confirmed on whether filming will go ahead and film in NZ. I’m hoping that it can but who knows.
