Indian Actors Being Charged For Kissing On Screen

Gavel.jpgDamn, I wonder what India would have thought of Shortbus? Ok so here’s the deal… 2 Bollywood actors, Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan, are being CHARGED with obscenity for… are you ready for this… KISSING in a movie. Yup, looks like a lawyer has filed a CRIMINAL case against them. Yahoo News gives us this:

Shailendra Dwivedi of Indore, near Bhopal, the capital of central Madhya Pradesh state, said the scene from the movie, titled “Dhoom 2,” lowered the dignity of Indian women and gave an obscene message to youth. “Bollywood actors are conveying vulgarity in the society,” Dwivedi told Reuters. “These films cannot be watched with our families, they are so vulgar at times.”

Hell, they should be charged just for making a movie called “Dhoom 2″… sounds too much like Doom… and that sucked ass.

Look, we shouldn’t jump to judge another culture… who’s to say they’re not right and we’re not just a bunch of depraved perverts? It’s just that the cultural differences this story highlights really blow my mind. Excuse me, I have to go watch some porn now.

  1. Sorry, I should’ve realized Torque and F&F were totally unrelated. I mean, the former is about street racing on *bikes* and the latter in *cars*.

Oh, and btw, the movie IS that bad.

  2. i didn’t even like the film much, but seriously, 1 motorobike scene & its inspired by fast and the furious (which had cars in it)?? what sense is that?

if you’d have said torque, i’d half believe you .. as Dhoom (1) was probably a ‘better’ take on a similar plot than Torque

Dhoom:2 wasn’t inspired by anything (probably the issue)
okay thas a bit harsh, it wasn’t that bad’

  3. How about suing Bollywood for making trash like Dhoom2, which if you didn’t know is “inspired” from the ‘Fast & the Furious’ series. Really.

btw, the so-called kiss is half a second of Aishwarya Rai & Hrithik Roshan brushing their lips together – quite possibly the best half a second of acting in the movie from either of them.

  4. TheMovieBlog is discussing Bollywood?? Cool! :o)

I just saw Dhoom 2 on Friday last week. Yes…the liplock was a little surprising to me in a Bollywood movie, but it was short, about 3 secs. Nothing that should be penalized, I think. There was another movie, which released in the late 90s that had kissing for some time on the screen. Can’t recall the title.

What was a bit surprising to me was the amount of skin the women showed in this movie. There were literally scenes that only focused on the women and men exposing their bodies. Kinda like the beginning of Baywatch. Imagine something like that through an entire movie, which was about 2.5 hrs.

I for one enjoyed it and got a kick out of it. It was a dumb fun movie.

Bollywood is moving very fast and I’m sure there will be more kissing, maybe even some hanky panky on the big screen in the near future.

  5. Finally, you’re talking a little of Bollywood – but sheer criticism huh?

Dhoom:2 is a sequel to Dhoom which released 2004 a year before Doom the movie :) The film is actually not that great, the predecessor was a lot better.

As for court cases in India, its all crazy talk – agreed. We had a ‘star’ possessing illegal arms & the case went on for over a decade .. There was a film back in 2001 which was our contribution to the Oscars, only this year, some dude decided to file a case suggesting the producers hadn’t got permission to shoot in some locations.

Just like in the US some of it is for the possible monetary profit, some for publicity, some just as a reason to cause upset and bad publicity to others.

Like for example, the above case was only brought to light 5 years later because that Producer had another film releasing soon & he has some political views which he is open about. (Aamir Khan)

As for the whole kissing issue, its total bollocks .. we’ve had far more kissing and in essence soft-porn over the past few years that came accross no issues at all …

Even pre-martial sex .. which is taboo has been portrayed as not such a bad thing in films such as Hum Tum .. & Salaam Namaste .. not to even get started on Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (which contains adultery).

Apart from the last, these were all happily accepted .. (for now, who knows we might see a court case in a decade or 2). The last was a film about 2 couples unhappy with their marriages and a simple film that suggested you should marry for the wrong reasons such as your Parents forcing you to, Age or merely because you were proposed to. These messages need to be said to people of our (Indian) culture ..

but what does the media dwell on?? Ooh Adultery, & give the actors stick for being bad people .. its just the way it is ..

The main reason is that Indian Cinema is a far larger influence on the lives and families in India than any other country I know, they (generalising a little, ofcourse) use these on-screen icons as a role model for how a person should be, thats why Indian Cinema is a tad behind as far as stories go, thankfully the revenue abroad now becoming a larger share of their total revenue is helping the revolution of films that a decade or 2 ago would have been booo’d and made zilch.

I could go on about this for days on end, since my life revolves around Bollywood films but I shall stop ..

but John, I really really think you need to watch a few to get an idea of how things have changed – I can be sure you have an idea in your head of what to expect, but if you watch the right films, that will change!

Feel free to contact me – anybody if they want to discuss this further’

  6. Sigh!

Being an Indian isn’t easy. Though let me assure you the smile hasn’t left my face. It’s not about culture. It’s about dumbfuck lawyers. Some time ago one tried to get orkut.com banned because it had a community called ‘I Hate India’.

Most Indians feel as ‘WTF’ as others do when things like this happen.

  7. Holy fuck!

Rock and roll though John. That was a fantastic ending to your post. Oh, in case your looking for a good daily website, go on thehun.net
