Happy Feet and Casino Royale 1 And 2 At Boxoffice For 3rd Week

I can’t remember the last time this has happened. For the third straight week Happy Feet and Casino Royale have come in at #1 and #2 at the boxoffice. “Happy Feet” got $17 million in the three days beginning December 1, taking its total to $121 million and “Casino Royale” followed with $15.1 million, for a three-week total $115.9 million.

Are these two films really that good? Or is it just a matter of the competition over the last 3 weeks have really been that poor? Deja Vu came in 3rd place for the 2nd week in a row.

Of the new films that opening this week, The Nativity Story came in 4th with $8 million… which was pretty much to be expected, so that’s not too bad. Turistas BOMBED despite a late heavy marketing push coming in 8th in it’s opening week with $3.5 million, and National Lampoon’s Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj did even worse with more screens coming in 10th with a pathetic $2.3 million… but did anyone really expect it to do any better than that?

This week will be interesting. Apocalypto is opening… so look for it to finally knock Happy Feet out of top spot. I have no clue how well it will do (I’m thinking about $20 million opening weekend). We’ll have to wait and see.

  1. I’m really not that surprised to see that those two films came in on top again. It was a very quiet weekend with very little worth mentioning opening. I agree though…Apocalypto is going to take over next weekend.

  2. apocalypto has some stiff competition this week though. I don’t think it is an absolute lock for the top spot.
Blood Diamond and the holiday are opening up……The holiday looks awful but I still think one of those two films look more likely to take the number spot over apocalypto……
Apocalypto has the better reviews but it still has the odds against it……gibson is still a little tarnished by the whole jewgate incident and the film is hardly a typical pack ’em blockbuster fare.I am curious myself but I will be seeing blood diamond first….

I think apocalypto may wind up a big contender at oscar season now after reading these reviews though….There really hasn’t been any real obvious front runners yet…

I am curious how the critics will react to rocky balboa..will it be sly’s time to have a little bit of goodwill thrown his way or are they going to tear him to pieces???

  3. I suspect The Nativity Story will have legs throughout the Christmas season and end up a modest hit. I also suspect it’ll be a yearly hit on DVD for several years to come.

I am very curious about Apocalypto, but may not rush out next weekend. We’ll see. Mel is always interesting.

  4. You have said so many times dont underestimate a childrens movie, and weekends is probably the days of the week most families go watch movies. That and everything that opened this weekend sucked
