Short Circuit Remake

Short-Circuit-RemakeOh… My… God. Looks like we’re about to get a Short Circuit remake. Yes that’s right… I’ll say it… here it goes… “Johnny Five is alive!!!” Oh come on, you knew it had to be said.

I loved this movie as a kid, and it’s funny because Serena (from Joblo and occasional Audio Edition guest) and I were just having breakfast the other day and she brought up the Short Circuit frainchise as one of the only films to make her freak out and scare her as a child. You know the part where the guys are beating the shit out of Johnny 5, and he’s begging for his life but they just keep beating him? Yeah… still freaks Serena out. Anyway…

The good folks over at Moviehole give us this:

There have been rumours about some kind of continuation of the franchise for a while now, but this is the first that someone up the food chain has actually acknowledged the buzz. It’s believed some of the original gang – sans Badham – are involved in the remake.

So what’s the angle here? Are they going to make a slightly darker more “real” Short Circuit about an android that becomes self aware? Will it star Arnold Schwarzenegger? Or, will they make another silly light hearted story about Johnny 5? If so… does that really need a remake at this point? So part of me is pretty geeked out about this news… but another part doesn’t know if it’s needed yet. Your thoughts?

  1. why would anyone like the idea of a “darker, more realistic take on the subject matter”? “gritty”? we are talking about a ‘short circuit’ movie, aren’t we?

i’m sorry, but the WHOLE POINT of the character is about a robot finding a heart. to even THINK (or even worse – prefer) getting rid of that original concept and making it something cynical really bothers me.

  2. I’m intrigued by the idea of doing a darker, more realistic take on the subject matter.
If it’s just gonna be another family friendly, give everybody a hug at the end type movie then I really dont have much interest. I’d probably still go see it but I would prefer a grittier approach.

  3. ShortCircut 2 was more entertaining than one, but let’s have some INPUT (sorry, had to slip it in)

What purpose would a remake serve? IT IS A ROBOT. You don’t have actor replacement issues. You don’t have a question if no.5 is too old for the part. Indeed, could it be voiced by the same actor? Why not the 80’s n.5 is magicallyfund and reactivated, and must cope in a new fish out of water situation in today’s tech world. Once ahead of his time, he finds out time has started to catch up to him.

    What’s wrong with that?
