Drew Barrymore is taking double duty as director and movie star in her new film Whip It. No, its not a film about the teenage desperation for a buzz from a can of whip cream. Its all about the Roller Derby sensation of the 70s that appears to be making a quiet comeback.
The plot centers on Page as a petite teenage girl who rebels against her beauty-pageant-obsessed mother (Marcia Gay Harden) and boring Texas town by joining the rough-and-tumble world of roller derby under the name Babe Ruthless, which brings us to the coolest thing about this movie, the Derby names.
Barrymore plays a character named Smashley Simpson and Wiig plays her sister named Maggie Mayhem. She was going to be called Malice In Wonderland but I’m glad they didn’t go with that one. Their team, the good guys, is called The Hurl Scouts.Fallon plays the derby announcer and Lewis gets to be called Dinah Might, the leader of rival derby team The Holy Rollers, who finds out a secret that could force her tiny new foe from the competition. And badass stunt woman Zoe Bell (Deathproof) is Bloody Holly
The cast looks awesome and there seems to be a positive buzz with Barrymore at the helm.
At very least it will provide us some toughass roller eyecandy and witty stage names.
Many derby girls are not too thrilled with the teams punching other chicks in the face, etc. It misrepresents the rules national teams have to follow. We still knock the crap out of other chicks during a bout, but ask any derby girl and they’ll tell you that no moves like that are allowed in the sport. I understand that,but I also feel any publicity for the sport is good publicity. The movie is comming out right at the end of Derby season for the year though – bad timming.
Say, in that second picture, isn’t that the woman that plays Alice from Revenge of the Fallen?

I belive that is the actress that plays Audrey Griswold on National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation… But I could be wrong.
For a brief moment, the title almost sounded like a biopic of the punk new wave band/music video pioneers Devo.
Betcha “Whip It” is on the soundtrack!

I go to the Derby Girls sessions here in London, and they are fun as shit! There’s something about seeing these girls knock each other around, that’s kind of erotic… Not to mention their sweet, tight shorts! ;)
One thing I don’t get though, is how these hot bodied Hollywood girls are wearing skirts. Not very realistic, considering it gives your opponent something to grab you by.
This could be a fun time. I’ll keep my eyes out for it.
