Spider-Man 3 Has Gwen Stacy

Bryce Dallas HowardI don’t know if this will make Spider-Man comic fans thrilled or pissed. But it looks like Peter Parker’s first love, Gwen Stacy, has been cast and is in Spider-Man 3… and you just KNOW she’ll be in 4 if there is indeed a 4.

In the comics, the relationship with Gwen ended in tragedy:

The original Green Goblin, Norman Osborn, kidnapped Gwen and took her to the George Washington Bridge, or maybe the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s been changed so many times. In any case, Gwen was knocked off the bridge and Spidey snagged her with a web-line, which snapped her neck.

In all his rage, Spider-Man found the Green Goblin and nearly killed him, but managed enough restraint to keep himself from doing something he would regret later. Then the Goblin tried to catch Spidey from behind, but that ever-present spider-sense warned him in the nick of time and he dodged the goblin-glider. Norman Osborn was impaled upon “a stake of humble tin.” He was believed dead for quite some time.

Does that sound familiar? Yeah… like the end of the first Spider-Man film.

The role of Gwen Stacy has been given to Bryce Dallas Howard, who was probably the only bright spot in The Village. Personally, I’m excited about this news. I think it throws some great conflict potential into the mix… even if it’s not exactly true to the comic itself. Besides, anything that takes attention and screen time away from Kirsten Dunst is a good thing in my books (I don’t mind her in general… I just think she’s horrible as Mary Jane). Your thoughts?

  1. Actually, Rufus, the whole “she was dead before he caught her” was just a theory started by fans, and it was confirmed that it was in fact Spidey snapping her neck that killed her.

  2. Yap, I love the character. He is the most human superhero you can meet. He is not ultrapowerful, neither rich, he has all kinds of troubles you can identify with…

The movies are not faithful to the original, but you can see the spirit of it. As in Conan… LOL Yes, I am also a Conan fan… anyway, I dislike purists…

  3. I think Bryce is going to appear blonde dyed in the movie. So I have read. I like her eyes, she can make a great Gwen. Anyway, those comic fundamentalists shouldn´t have seen the first two movies, so why care? LOL

Me and some nephew of mine are thrilled with expectation for this movie to come. Spidey rules!

  4. I have to agree with some of the earlier comments. I was and am a huge fan of the comics, and I saw Gwen storylines intermixed with the MaryJane Watson character in the first film. Which disappointed me at the time, but now even moreso since they are planning on introducing Gwen anyway. I suppose you can still have Gwen killed by a baddy with Spidey thinking he saved her only to find out that she was already dead by whatever means. Which Rufus stated correctly by the way. It wasn’t Spidey’s webline that killed her, it was the force of being knocked by the Goblin’s glider. She was dead as she fell. Spidey webbed her thinking he was saving her, but when he pulled her up she was already gone.

    Yes I’m a comic dork.

  5. NERD ALERT! Just a clarification, Gwen Stacy was dead even before Spidey snagged her and snapped her neck. As for that “stake of humble tin”, uh, as I remember the Goblin’s own glider impaled him exactly like it did in the first movie. (way to go Raimi!) *phew* Feel better now.

  6. What pisses me off about Bryce Howard being in Spiderman 3 isnt that she’s Gwen Stacy. Its that they couldve replaced Kirsten Dunst with her to be the new Mary Jane.

Seriously, doesnt Bryce Howard fit the MJ role 100x better? If I had a time machine, Kirsten Dunst wouldve been renamed Gwen Stacy for the first movie and then Bryce Howard wouldve come in the 2nd or 3rd as Mary Jane.

  7. Darren, my handle “Morbius” is actually named after the renegade Time Lord who appeared as a disembodied brain in the Doctor Who television story “The Brain of Morbius”, not the living vampire Dr Michael Morbius became circa Amazing Spider-Man #101.

I thought I had just better clear that up lest anyone think me a comic book geek or something! ;-)

  8. Watch Gwen be in it for like 15 minutes and then die or not be even a main character. I agree that Howard looks NOTHING like Gwen, but hey, they’re changing so many things in the plotline, why not change someone’s looks? Next thing you know kingpin will be black! Oh, wait…nevermind.

  9. Sounds like great casting. I dont know to much of the Gwen Stacy storyline and stuff. So she was thrown off, Spidey tried to save her by getting her with a web, he did, but she snapped her neck and died? How long about had they known each other or w/e? j/w, sorry for the trouble people, thanks.

  10. Darren says, “Dont sweat it Simone”. Hey Darren, okay I wont. ;-)

And to Morbius, I think you should accept by now that what your ideal casting ideas for anybody, be it Wonderwoman, Lois Lane, will never happen. If I said she was PERFECT for this role I am looking at it performance wise, so regardless of what I know and NOT know about Spiderman, its out of my ignorance that I said it which I am forever entitled to.

At the end of the day, its just a movie, why be so pedantic about it? There, I am not even sure know if I used the right word, to be honest, who cares?

  11. Simone, I REALLY did read your post.

Yes you admitted you knew little about Spider-Man, but then you boldly stat that an actress would be “Perfect” for a role you know nothing about!

As Spider-Man’s co-creator would say, “Nuff Said!”

  12. Now I may not have read Spider-Man comics (only watched the TV show when I was young) but after getting the history together last year I hope they don’t screw up with Gwen, but should they actually decide to kill her off, do it in Sam Raimi’s *rumored* 4th film (since I’m hearing that he may do 3 and 4 back-to-back in 2007).

  13. I have a problem with them introducing Gwen.

Its clear that the movie versions were going to “overlook” Gwen and carry on without that story arc.

They put hints of Gwen in MJ and to now do Gwen they will have to do it differently. Gwen was Peter’s first love, but in the movie we have Peter in love with MJ before she even knows she exists (in the comics, MJ pursued Peter) and then the Goblin scene where he tosses MJ off the Brooklyn Bridge (just like he did in the comic version with Gwen)

It seemed like they were hitting on the Gwen moments that define Peter, and putting them into MJ. I dread to see what they are going to do with Gwne now that her most memorable moments are gone.

  14. Don’t sweat it Simone. Look at the name. I too, want to see House Of M’s Living Vampire in a film.

Oh, and I’m predicting that in Spidey 3 Gwen will be Harry’s squeeze; not Peter’s. I have $5 riding on this.

  15. Morbius, if you REALLY read my post, wasnt I clear about not being a fan of the franchise? I just like Bryce Dallas Howard, didnt you see how I segued into her other film and not actually discuss Spiderman? Sheeshh.

  16. “I believe that Bryce Dallas Howard” will be perfect.” -Simone

Clearly you know nothing about Gwen Stacy do you Simone? :-P

(I blame myself, I should have taught you better!)

Only Hollywood could cast a blonde as a red-head and a red-head as a blonde in the same franchise.

Ironically Kirstin Dunst (with the exception of her dimples the one thing she has in common with MJ) looked the spitting image of Gwen Stacy at the premiere of the first Spider-Man movie.

With no disrespect meant to her Bryce (daughter of Ron) Howard is not attractive enough to play MJ and does not even remotely resemble Gwen Stacy.

  17. If anyone’s been reading Marvel’s “Ultimate SpiderMan” comic, Gwen was recently killed in the pages (oh about several months ago) — she was murdered — her lifeforce literally sucked out of her — by The ‘ultimate’ version of Carnage (which is a offshoot of the Venom character).

Given the ‘history rewrites’ in the Spidey movies, it’s not inconceivable that they could give us the tragedy of Gwen’s death in this third movie — maybe by borrowing somewhat from the Ultimate book and having her die by the hands of Venom (who would substitute for Carnage).

  18. Yip I think seeing another female lead will do the films some good, and Howard as Gwen will be great. Does this mean we will see some cat fights between her and Dunst over Peter? :p
