John Reviews Mr. & Mrs. Smith 8/10

A film like Mr. & Mrs. Smith has a high potential for let down. Big names. Big Explosions. Big marketing campaign. Yup… expectations were high. But I stand here before you now to tell you beyond any shadow of a doubt… IT DELIVERS!!!!

I had my doubts going into this film. The first 30 seconds totally won me over!

By now you all know that the premise of the film is that a married couple (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) are international assassins… but neither of them know that about the true profession of the other.

This film is smart, funny and quite charming all at the same time. Throw in some great action sequences and you’ve got a winner.

I’ve got to tell ya folks, I have no idea why this movie is getting as many negative reviews as it is. Currently Rotten Tomatoes has Mr. & Mrs. Smith rated at a 63%. I’m stunned. I’ve gone over the film again and again in my head and I just can’t imagine why so many critics are knocking it.

Both Pitt and Jolie are fantastic and Vince Vaughn give some excellent comic relief.

Does the plot have some holes? Yes, absolutely. However, the goal of this film was not to be a solid thriller/drama… it’s sole intention was to entertain. And for me, from start to finish Mr. & Mrs. Smith entertained the crap out of me.

Go see it, enjoy it, then see it again. I give Mr. & Mrs. Smith an 8/10.

  1. Are you kidding?

    We walked out

Tired plot, gratuitious violence under the current hackeneyed idea of war between the sexes (and equality). If it weren’t for angelina’s chest and lips and legs, and Brad’s good looks and the Hollywood shit factory, this wouldn’t have even been made.

  2. I’m not Angelina Jolies.. Or Brad Pitts biggest fans (at all) and only went along (and dragged a friend) to see Vince Vaughn and Adam Brody and i’ll admitt i loved it. Like john said, the first couple of seconds with the marriage councelling won me over! I loved the action.. the comedy! It was a great movie and i’ll definently be purchasing this!

  3. David aka Trysop says, “I’m glad you think it’s 8/10 good (haven’t seen it yet), however your score says it’s better than Revenge of the Sith (you gave 7/10 stars). Do you really feel that way?”

Gee David, I was gonna ask John the same thing! *winks* And again, I know fully well what John will say, “film is subjective” Simone. ;-)

  4. The question is if you would still have given it an 8/10, if you haven’t read the bad reviews from rotten tomatoes. I know that it sounds a bit crazy; you like a film or you don’t like it. But I know from personal experience that I can defend a film as being the most perfect thing, as much as I can destroy it as being the most stupid-ass movie I have ever seen – depending on the situation and depending to whom I am talking to.

  5. I’m not a fan of either actor either but I thought it was a thoroughly enjoyable popcorn film and would certainly recommend it. Quite smart and very funny. If only all romantic comedies were that witty.

  6. I haven’t seen it, but based on the t.v. ad, I think I’ll wait for the DVD. It looks like one of those just-too-cool, over-the-top, cheesy-one-liner type movies (that “who’s your daddy” line in the commercial made me cringe). But, your 8/10 has me a little curious. We’ll see … in 6 to 12 months.

  7. wasnt AS good as i thought it would be but it was pretty damn hot! did anybody else notice the fight club shirt adam brody was wearing in the movie? and one fault..shaky camera syndrome in the beginning

  8. I agree with you john. I can’t see where the negatives are coming from, I thought it was one of the better movies put out in a long time. Hopefully this will do well enough to make a #2… Now Batman better be as good..

  9. I’m glad you think it’s 8/10 good (haven’t seen it yet), however your score says it’s better than Revenge of the Sith (you gave 7/10 stars). Do you really feel that way?
