While I am still uncomfortable with many aspects of the upcoming CG Live Action Smurfs movie, this at least confirms that Hank Azaria is an inspired choice for Gargamel, the dark Wizard who covets the Smurfs for their magical properties (and they are apparently tasty)
I am still concerned about how the story will feel in modern day Manhattan with a perfectly medieval looking Gargamel, and adding more humans to the story.

Cool….but he needs a cat for a sidekick
The man with over 1000 voices and faces…He’s an inspired choice(even though I share the same Goldblum preference)
Goldblum looks the part, but is way too laid back for Garagamel.
I really doubt there’s any way Hank Azaria could make this horrible idea for a movie any worse.
Who said it would be worse?
And while I have my reservations, who’s to say this is a horrible idea for a movie? Until we see it, we don’t know for sure.
Amen!
Yeah, the casting for at least this part looks inspired – and he’ll certainly pull it of acting wise, too (I could always see him playing this part, strangely enough).
I wish this weren’t taking place in NY. That’s honestly going to serve as a distraction. I would have really enjoyed this movie in the smurf fantasy universe… but I’ll keep my mind open and hope for the best. There’s a lot of talent going into this movie, so there is reason to hope.
I totally agree. The Smurfs in NYC still does not sit well with me, though I am very pleased to see that Gargamel is being represented accurately. Im assuming that the Smurfs and Gargamel are transported to modern day New York, though some sort of magic mumbo jumbo. Either way, Azaria looks amazing. Great choice indeed.
Perfect casting, hank is hilarious and needs more work
