Martin Scorsese has had a wide variety of Directing jobs over the years. From last year’s The Departed, to Michael Jackson’s “Bad” video, Mr. Scorsese has done it all. Documentaries, Drama, Comedy, Thrillers, Romance, Musical… But wait, he hasnt done a Family Film!
Movieweb Says:Warner Bros. is hoping that [Martin Scorsese] might helm a movie based on Brian Selznick’s bestselling children’s novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret, the studio having aquired the rights just a month after its release by Scholastic. (For those not keeping track, Scholastic and Warner Bros. have had a lot of success with J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.) The adaptation will be done by screenwriter John Logan, who penned Scorsese’s 2004 biopic The Aviator, and produced by regular Scorsese collaborator Grant King.
Brian Selznick’s novel is about a 12-year-old orphan who lives in the walls of a Paris train station in 1930 and a mystery involving the boy, his late father and a robot.
I was right there with them until they said “a robot”. I guess in family films we dont really have to adhere to the strict confines of reality, so I guess if we have a boy living in the walls of a train station, then he can have himself a robot friend. Or maybe the robot has something to do with his late father.. I dont see exactly see how the robot fits in here. Anyways…
With all of Mr. Scorsese’s successes we see a mixed bag of formats, but is he really suited for a family film? Some would suggest with his long run of successful movies, and by his reputation alone that he could do anything he wants to do.
I wonder why in the 48 years he has been directing that he has yet to do a family film. Perhaps he chose not to for a reason? I took a lot of flack suggesting that John A Romero only had success with Zombie movies, so I wont make the same generalization here, but what do you think of Scorsese doing a youth focused family movie?
