Saw 7 gets Cary Elwes and 3D

The Saw franchise is trying to prove that it can outlive its own value, and with its seventh chapter in the making we are not only getting the return of Cary Elwes, but also the addition of 3D.

Coming Soon shares:

The full cast includes Tobin Bell, Elwes, Costas Mandylor, Betsy Russell, Sean Patrick Flanery, Gina Holden, Chad Donella, Laurence Anthony, Dean Armstrong and Naomi Snieckus.

In the seventh installment, as a deadly battle rages over Jigsaw’s brutal legacy, a group of Jigsaw survivors gathers to seek the support of self-help guru and fellow survivor Bobby Dagen (Flanery), a man whose own dark secrets unleash a new wave of terror…

I haven’t followed Saw since part two or three. I don’t remember. Lost interest in this series.

But for the fans of the series, having returning cast members to keep it interesting is a good bid.

But 3D? Why?????

I am an advocate for 3D and I love the effect. I dont see it as a gimmick at all. But it has its place, and Saw just isn’t one of them.

  1. To be honest if you havent seen all of them you need to do so before you watch saw 7. Yes they did get silly after jigsaw died but it all adds up to the finale . There are lots of flashbacks in later films 3 – 6 and explain everything.

  2. Okay, RIDICULOUSLY devoted fan here.

I’m just glad they’re ending it at 7. I was skeptical when I heard 8, and livid when I heard 9 (imdb.com news). There’s only so much defending I can do when it comes to the SAW franchise. I whole-heartedly agree that 1-3 were definitely the best. Even SAW IV was alright, albeit a little too cutty (too much scene jumping) for my taste. 5 and 6 should have been aborted like *Don’t take this too seriously* a rape victim’s fetus. I mean, omg. I can’t express how terrible those two movies were. You just KNOW a film is going to be shitty if it starts with Gold-Plated, shimmery lettering (SAW V), and SAW VI was too gimmicky and emotional in a way that didn’t feel real and was trying too hard to be a drama (specifically the carosoul(sp?) scene).

I’m pissed that Greutert’s back too :( I thought he did a terrible job with the SAW film, and am very surprised Lionsgate wants to fail THAT badly in the bid against Paranormal Activity 2, just saying.

    Blah. Nerd Rage.

  3. I’m not the first one to think up this theory, but I’ve always sort of thought Dr. Gordon, Carey Elwes’s character, was a sort of a behind the scenes protege, handling the medical side of all of the traps. I mean, Jigsaw is smart, but I doubt he’s careful and smart enough to successfully remove an eyeball, hide a key behind it, and put everything back together in working condition.

Something I’ve always wondered about was a line from the second or third movie in which Jigsaw claims Dr. Gordon was his patient as well. Maybe there’s some sort of double meaning behind it, and I’m calling it now, that Dr. Gordon is the real Jigsaw who’s been orchestrating everything since the beginning.

While I’d prefer the movie not to go the ever popular 3D route, Saw has always been a gory movie and, if the 3D is done well, may actually intensify the effect the violence has on the audience.

  4. Saw 1-3 were good, IMO. 4 and 5 were shit, but 6 I thought really worked hard at making the series good again, and for the most part succeeded. Would have done a bit better job though if it didn’t have the baggage of cleaning up the messy plot threads from 4 and 5.

  5. I stuck with the franchise since day one. Sometimes against my better judgment. However, I’m now interested in Saw VII if only because I’ll find out what happened to Elwes’ character.

  6. I haven’t watch any of them since 4. I thought 1-3 were excellent films that tied a story well. But once Jigsaw died, they should’ve left it alone. When 4 came out on DVD, I watched it on netflix instant viewing, and I barely got through it. It was a jumbled mess that made no sense and it was so cheesy and felt like filer scenes in between “cool death scenes”. To save myself further disappointment, I’ve skipped 5 and 6 all together because I’d rather remember the first 3 as the first true horror franchise that had substance and story, something I haven’t seen since Phantasm (which also had it’s ups and downs, but at least the story was fresh and interesting).

  7. I admit that I have seen all six movies. It’s true they keep going more and more downhill, but I just stuck with it. At this point I watch them to laugh at the victims. I didn’t know how they were going to keep it going after Jigsaw’s death, but they did. It is fun to see those little known actors that only you know, appear in one of the movies, and get killed off. I don’t really watch a horror film unless I want to see a certain celebrity get killed off. Yes, I do plan to see Saw 7. I hope it’s the last. Kill off Costas and Betsy so they can’t keep Jigsaw’s work going any more. Kill off Elwes so people will stop wondering if he’s alive. I wouldn’t mind seeing Gina Holden dying, but chances are her and Sean Patrick Flanery will survive. Everyone else on that list can be killed off.
