With Iron Man 2 right around the corner and Iron Man 3 already plotted for 2012, Iron Man writer Justin Theroux was talking about writing for the franchise and hopes to return for part 3.
We began by asking Theroux about Iron Man’s long time nemesis from the comics, The Mandarin, and if there was a chance that the character would make a cameo appearance in the new film?
“Yeah, we tip our hat to that but that’s a tough one to get in because it’s such a big storyline,” explained Theroux. So that, I don’t know, and I don’t dare say it but it might feature in Iron Man 3, I don’t know?”
I actually liked that they hinted at Mandarin right from the beginning, but didnt hit on the character right away.
The “Ten Rings” is name dropped in the first film, and the middle eastern baddie is seen fidgeting with an ornate ring on his hand, presumably a symbol or tribute of one of the collection of super scientific rings that powers Mandarin’s abilities. But he was at Easter Egg level of subtlety.
Iron Man 2 still doesn’t bring Stark face to face with Manadarin, but there sounds like another reference may come up.
I would love to see Mandarin in 3, then Demon in the Bottle in 4. Then by the time they do 5 there will be enough films to do Marvel’s Civil War. Ok, that’s not likely to happen, but a geek can dream.
if you look in iron man 2 at around 14:35 during the hearing, james rhodes is also wearing a chunky ring on his middle left finger, which corresponds to the “electro blast” ring of the ten rings, but i may just be overanalizing it haha.

In the first movie, The Asian (indian? Iraqi?) leder of the 10 rings wears the Mandarin’s ring.
Later in the movie, Iron Monger is seen wearing one too, a different one that belongs to the Mandarin.
In the Iron Man 2 trailer, when Justin Hammer says “When I saw what you did to Stark in that track, i mean- WOW. You need my resources” he raises his hand slightly and you can see a Mandarin ring on his pinky.
Later in the trailer, he says “I want to make Iron Man look like an antique” and they show Whiplash hold the helmet of one of Justin’s suits, showing his ring as well.
Also (im sure you know) when the terrorists make a video tape with a kidnapped Tony Stark, they have a flag in the back, that shows the Ten Rings insignia.

i think what would be cool is in reality the Mandarin acually gave his rings to all of them and is using those rings to control them ultimally being the bad guy in everything
that is precisely whats happening.
They did a zoom in of each ring when they stopped the videos from Ironman and Ironman 2, and they all had a different logo.
then they showed the ten rings Mandarin wears- they each have a different logo on them, and they showed them in order of ring, and the four rings they showed in those videos belonged to four of the fingers… and they showed which ring belonged to each finger- because the logos were the same exact ones
