Rob Marshall talks Pirates 4

Rob Marshall is signed on to direct Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides, and now in an interview he talks about a possible summer 2010 start on the film… IF the movie gets made.

Filmonic quotes Rob Marshall:

“We’re still trying to figure out if it’s going to all happen,” he continued. “If it happens–I think Johnny’s doing a movie with Angelina Jolie in the spring (that’s The Tourist)–so if it happens, we’ll start in the summer, and we’ll see. I’m excited. If it happens, it happens. I’d be thrilled. I just love Johnny and I’m excited about the genre.”

“I would need a script first,” he laughed when asked what direction he hoped to take the movie visually. “It all comes from the script and the story. You serve the story and you find out what the story is and then you work from there, that’s it. It’s simple.”

The script is supposed to be based on the novel “On Stranger Tides” which will be adapted to fit its story into the Pirates world. The adapted screenplay obviously has not been completed yet, but there is a 2011 release date looming.

But in the quote there was an awful lot of “ifs” suggesting there is an entire possibility they may walk away from this proposed film. With rumours of Johnny Depp’s disatisfaction with Disney canning his buddy Dick Cook threatening him not to sign on with Pirates 4, and these ifs being tossed about, I wonder if it will happen.

  1. What is everyone talking about “the world’s end” was weak etc.?!?

It was so refreshing with new elements, the multiple Jacks, the scene with the “white rocks” was amazing, Bloom’s own agenda…everything was new, new dialogues, new story line, witty, with old familiar faces Just the opening scene when they sing that haunting Pirate song got me on board right away…I can’t wait for a 4th Pirate movie, but only if Johnny Depp is starring in it and I am certain he will only take this role if the script etc is good.

  2. I hope they do walk away from it as the third film was a disappointment and any further instalments will struggle to recapture the magic of the first movie which made it such a hit, no matter who signs on to do it.

  3. I’m one of the few that loved the franchise. At World’s End was the weakest, but I still had a blast with all three films. A fourth installment without Bloom or Knightly would be a dream come true.
