Studio Ghibli Announces The Borrower Arrietty

I just love Studio Ghibli and everything they do just strikes a chord of whimsy with me.

And this new Ghibli release just has me craving some magic.

Twitch shares:

Studio Ghibli made the official announcement of their new full length feature film titled Karigurashi no Arrietty (The Borrower Arrietty). The film will be an adaptation of Mary Norton’s Carnegie Medal winning novel The Borrowers and, as hinted earlier on GhibliWorld, will be directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi.

The Borrowers was adapted to live action feature film and was also translated loosely into an animated series “The Littles”

I really look forward to seeing how Ghibli takes a look at this classic tale.

  1. I’m not prepared to say the EVERYTHING Studio Ghibli does is genius, but anything Miyazaki is involved in is pretty much golden. And, if its any indication, I can’t really stand Anime, but I find his work amazing.

    1. Can’t stand anime? Sacrilege.

      a) Anime encompasses every bit of animated work that the country of Japan has ever produced, so to say you can’t stand it is kinda racist. Not to mention that there’s so much variety of anime that there’s no way you can really not stand all of it.

b)Their animated television alone is, on average, about a hundred steps ahead of ours in terms of animation, action, character development, and overall storytelling.

Miyazaki is brilliant. But there’s plenty of anime out there that’s just as good, if you’re willing to look for it. Just saying.

      1. Its not sacrilege to dislike anime. Its not racist to not like Asian styled animation, and there is no way you can make that logic leap just because he doesn’t like it.

Everyone has their own preferences. You can’t MAKE someone like it no matter what your personal feelings on it are, and no matter how many steps “ahead” you think the quality is.

Yes, there may be something out there he would like and he already said he didnt like everything Ghibili but does like Miyazaki stuff amazing.

      2. I don’t “think” that anime is, on average, way ahead of our cartoons. I know. It’s so apparent, Rodney. Anyone who’s sat down and compared Avatar: The Last Airbender with Naruto and Samurai Jack with Bleach knows what I’m talking about. Different and weird? For a lot of anime, this may be the case. But on average it’s often just plain better. It’s the charm and style that kids shows are known for, but blended with intense, detailed storylines and character development one would expect from shows like 24 and True Blood. And they’ve been making those kinds of cartoons since the 70’s. It’s addictive, and it’s satisfying.

In contrast, we haven’t even started to make linear, story-oriented cartoons with actual story and character arcs. We just have shows like Samurai Jack and Teenage Robot. Neither of which are necessarily bad shows, but just aren’t as evolved because they are severely lacking in story.

Sure, everyone has their preferences, and I can’t necessarily MAKE someone like it simply because I know it’s good, but all I was really pointing out is that there’s a lot to enjoy about it and that he should give it a chance.

      3. Hold up. What on earth is “Asian-styled animation”? When it comes to the graphical styles of Asian animation itself, I think it still stands that there’s way too much variety for you to simply rule it all out without pretty much being racist. You’d HAVE to be racist. That or extremely arbitrary. It’s like saying American animation sucks. It’s too broad a subject for anyone to have any idea what it means. Unless, again, it’s just a racist comment.

Just look at Berzerk, Claymore, Dragonball, and Astroboy. The graphical styles are worlds apart.

And the lack of story itself versus the actual presence of it seems pretty cut-and-dry to me.

That said, I have plenty of measurable data. Stories require development (for obvious reasons), something that the average anime consistently possesses and our cartoons consistently lack. That’s only the first shortcoming among many that becomes apparent when one compares the average American cartoon to the average anime.

I understand that some shows are just different. Spongebob Squarepants should not be compared with Code Geass. Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry maybe, but definitely not most current types of anime. But shows like Avatar and Samurai Jack are an entirely different matter. In fact, they (especially Avatar and many others of our cartoons) are actually quite blatantly attempting to mimic and emulate anime. Not saying it’s a bad thing, but when shows are inherently that similar it’s easier to see where one succeeds and the other misses the same mark.

      4. Hold up yourself. We are talking styles, not race. Drop that racist bullshit now because its just stretching and makes NO sense. Its also hurting your argument.

The very WORD Anime refers to Asian styled animation, specifically saying the type of animation that originates in Asian countries. That you try to make the argument that its not valid to hate all anime, because it would be like saying all american animation sucks just proves my point.

You want to give credit to a subsection of animation (anime) saying its better, but then refuse to admit where it originates? Because its racist?

And that presumption also defeats your hope of claiming this measurable data that puts Anime “ahead” of traditional american animation.

You claim character development and plot line are completely absent from american animation, and that is a sweeping generalization without justification as well.

I don’t have to debate this with you. You are beating yourself out of this discussion.

Its not “ahead” its just another style, which in your opinion is better and more to your tastes. Thats all.
