Seems wild speculation is the game of the day. Today we get news that Gwyneth Paltrow is throwing a hissy fit that her Iron Man 2 co-star Scarlett Johansson is getting too much attention and she isn’t going to stand for it! Meow!!

And now Paltrow has been left out in the promotional press as well, Daily Mail reported.
“Gwyneth was afraid she`d be upstaged by Scarlett and not being in the campaign was the final straw. She is furious she`s been left out,” a source said.
Paltrow, 36, now reportedly plans to boycott a promotion in San Diego later this month.
This just sounds like crazy talk to me. Seems someone is blurring the lines of the on screen romance of Pepper and Tony and is projecting the jealousy on Johansson and Paltrow.
The movie just finished principal photography late last week, and aside from a little bit of promo shots online there has been no real promotion on this yet. And even if she is upset that shes not getting second billing, how could she? The first movie was all about Tony’s origin story and the betrayal of Stane, so yeah, the headlining skirt in the movie was Paltrow, but in this sequel I would be surprised if she is more than just his faithful assistant and confidant flirting on the edge of romance through the whole film. Nothing that dominate.
She isn’t “boycotting” anything. Her character is just not that important in this chapter to kick off their promotional campain in this months San Diego Comic Con. The film is still 10 months away. I am sure we will see as much of Pepper as we need to in the promotional work, tv spots and posters.
I suspect this “outrage” is completely fabricated.

I agree with Gwenyth Paltrow; she has gotten no big billing thus far. I actually was wondering if she was in the sequel at all or if they had hired another actress to play Pepper Potts. Wouldn’t have surprised me since the whole Cheadle debacle. Maybe in later waves of promos will feature her, but I’ll be annoyed if they don’t.

Don’t make this about awards, because in order to prove your point Gwyneth Paltrow will have had to win 300 times as many as ScarJo. As it turns out, ScarJo has just as many wins as Paltrow and more nominations. Not to mention her four golden globes.
But it’s not about that, and I agree Paltrow is easily the better actress. But think about it: ScarJo would have to be 1/300th the actress Paltrow is. Maybe there is some actress out there that fits that description, but I kinda doubt it’s ScarJo.
Also, when you mention that Cate Blanchett and Gwyneth Paltrow are the two best actresses in the business now, I think you’re overlooking Jennifer Connelly, as she has an uncanny consistency of bringing surprising amounts of depth that others hadn’t even thought of to her roles. Even in the rare occasion that she’s in lame movies, such as the recent She’s Just Not That Into You. She never fails. She was a huge part of what made A Beautiful Mind so captivating. Heck, her performance was just mindblowing.

Regardless of how much truth there is too the rumor, the story here is about the disposability of the female roles in these types of movies.
ScarJo was brought in to be the hot young thing in the sexy costume, it’s a role Gwenyth Paltrow would’ve sufficed for not so long ago.
I don’t think Scarlett is “replacing” Gwyneth. She is just MORE eyecandy to be brought on. Mostly I figure her role here will just be as a stepping stone to Avengers anyways.
This way they wont have to pay too much time to establishing supporting characters in a cast that big.
First, Rodney, are you suggesting that Gwen doesn’t have much to do in Iron Man 2 (“Her character is just not that important in this chapter”) or simply suggesting she/her character isn’t needed at this stage of promotion?
However, I do think there MIGHT be a grain of truth to this. That recent photo shoot of Scarlett as Widow crawling on the floor is tacky. That is worthy of protest. I’m not a fan of it either. But that’s as far as it goes.
After all, Mickey Rourke was also on the cover, but we really haven’t seen much of Sam Rockwell either. Is there a rivalry there also?
More that it isnt needed at this stage of the promotions. As I mentioned in the post, I am sure we will see plenty more of Potts in the TVspots and posters to come.
When kicking off the promo stuff for a movie just under a year away you want to showcase the supporting cast that’s new. Show the villian, show the boobs. We already know Gwyn will be there, so thats not going to yield as much buzz.
I am not the least bit surprised that we are not seeing as much of Rockwell either. I am sure he will have his place in the plot, but he isnt the eyecandy that generates buzz. We know what Rockwell looks like, we didn’t know if Scarlett was going to be hot as Widow (even though I hoped)
Its all just narrow thinking. If this was the ONLY promotional characters showcased over the next 10 months, then fine. But they have barely begun.
I am certain we will see heaps of stuff from all the players involved.
