The Green hornet Movie Back On

Green-Hornet-GunRemember a while ago when everyone got all excited (me included) because Kevin Smith had signed up to write and direct The Green Hornet. It seemed like a good fit since Kevin Smith is a great storyteller and his well known as a massive comic book geek. But soon afterwards we learned that Smith backed out claiming that he didn’t think he could do a good job (For a MUCH better telling of the story, go rent An Evening With Kevin Smith).

But it looks like the ball has been picked up and a Green hornet movie is indeed going to be headed our way. The folks over at M&C give us the following:

It is being reported that Columbia Pictures is bringing to the big screen the crime fighting exploits of the comic book hero, The Green Hornet. Columbia reportedly optioned rights from Neal H. Moritz who acquired them from Green Hornet Inc. Moritz will executive produce.

International Herald Tribune quotes Moritz as saying, “With the radio show, television program, comic books and novels, there is ample source material to bring this classic crime-fighter to life.”

Ok look, I’m as big of a comic movie geek as they come… but I just don’t know about this one. When you really think about the concept of the character, what he does and doesn’t do… and his fricking name is “The Green Hornet”… he’s really just a dumbed down poor man’s version of Batman… without the coolness. I don’t think this is one they should do. But who knows.

  1. I think jet li is the perfect one still young enough and good enough to be kato now i love tony jaa but he need to learn english but either one is find with i’ll take jacky chan but get it done and done right, now who would play the green hornet maybe clooney another chance or who can do it.

  2. I am a tremendous Green Hornet fan. Despite the disparagement of some Batman fans and that is a great serial too,the Hornet had a lot of gadgets, was more of a libertarian character than Batman. People didn’t know if he really served the cause of good or evil in some instances. He had his own agenda, most often for the good. I liked the costumes used in the show and some of the backdrops, it is the scripts that needed complexity for the character that the TV show lacked and while Van williams was good, very good , the Hornet character was overshadowed by Kato/Bruce Lee ( whom wouldn’t be). Yet they were a great team, now update the serial. It was just as cool as Batman, the overturning Black Beauty, the sliding doors, the alley entrance doors to Mr Britt Reid’s suite. The Hornet is just as shadowy as Batman and I can see the plots being more complex and interesting in their twists than Batman. It all depends on the writers and the selection of the two main characters and antagonists.I am hopeful for this movie and am glad it is finally being made.

  3. They shouldn’t make this movie. The Green Hornet is just, as someone said,a wimpy Batman, I say leave the Hornet on the video shelves and keep Bruce Lee’s TV show alive, after all, Bruce Lee was a lot cooler than the guy in the green mask. Why, did he only wear a mask, anyway? Why didn’t he dress in a full hornet’s get up, with the wins and everything. The green mask, was bit weak. Think about all the other “masked” heroes, The Lone Ranger, mask and blue suit, silver bullets, the whole nine yards, As mentioned, Batman, full suit and mask,”The Man in the Iron Mask”, a full head mask, there, you couldn’t even see the color of his hair, a lame movie, though. So, to finish off, they should can the Green Hornet movie idea

  4. You already said “poor man’s” Batman statement with Iron Man (bullshit), what others do you got? The next thing you’re gonna say is Solomon Grundy is a “poor man’s” Hulk when clearly their backgrounds are totally different.

  5. I know you guys like him. Other than Keven Smith telling us about his superman script that he admits to be terrable, I don’t see what has he done to give an Super hero / Action movie any credibility.

  6. Yeah, Smith talks about how he’s watched action movies being shot and the extensive coverage is so tedious and time-consuming that it takes a week to shoot a minute or two of screen time. He said he doesn’t have that kind of patience and if you’re a fan of his you’ve probably noticed that he doesn’t even have the patience for five-shot coverage. ;-)

  7. I’m a little more optimisic, Gio, and I never felt the GH was a “poor man’s” Batman (certainly not a Adam West Batman, lol) …I agree Tony Jaa would be great as Kato, but I’d much rather see Jaa as Shang Chi.

  8. Yeah, Tony Jaa, for sure.
…or Jet Li. He might be a little long in the tooth to play Kato, though. He’s still got it, but Kato should be played by a yoiunger man. So, Jaa still gets my vote.

    And,
I’m glad that Smith is no longer involved.
Smith just doesnt seem like the right guy for this type of movie. He might have written a good script, but like he said, this movie is too big and too much for a director like him.
I mean, we’ll never truly know that for a fact. He could have knocked it out of the park, but if the man himself has no confidence then I dont want him behind the camera.
