I loved the first Captain America film. Darren did too. It was a period piece, it was a super hero movie, and it had Hugo Weaving as the villain… what wasn’t there to love? I immediately began my campaign that the next film in the franchise involve the introduction of the Winter Soldier so since its a reality I’m taking sole credit for the idea because guys at Marvel read this site too (We know you’re there). Well now comes word that Kevin Feige is back in the press promoting his upcoming productions and telling folks how the next Captain America film will show how our super heroes will be categorized with sub-genre’s and The Winter Solider is a political thriller:
…Marvel executive and producer Kevin Feige recently spoke about the superhero genre being a “fad,” and teased an intriguing political element of this upcoming sequel.
“If it is a fad, it’s one that lasts 30 to 40 years, as the Western did, because each one is so different. There’s an opportunity to graft almost sub-genres onto them. Our first Captain America film was a World War II picture, and the next is a political thriller. They all have their own textures and patinas, and that’s what is exciting about it.”
This sounds interesting and I imagine all sorts of Jason Bourne type scenarios in which they could make Captain America fit into the mold of a political thriller depending on the presentation of the story. The story alone won’t convince audiences so its up to those behind the lens to find the right recipe to make this idea work. Another thing I hope for is the type of loyalty and betrayal that I haven’t seen or appreciated as much in film since back in 1995 when Goldeneye was released. I want Bucky Barnes to be the new Alec Trevelyan and that’s the sort of approach that they should take with the character.
