Hoebers hired to write RED Sequel

After RED pulled out a surprise hit for Summit last year, it seems that the studio has hired Jon and Erich Hoeber to write a potential sequel. This doesn’t mean a movie has been approved but it does mean they are strongly thinking about it.

The Bruce Willis film was the highest-grossing picture for the studio outside of the Twilight franchise and has currently raked in $164 million worldwide. Also, while you and I know that the Golden Globes are meaningless, the nomination for “Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical)” helped raise the movie’s profile. With all that in mind, sources have told us that Summit has hired screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber to write a sequel.

I think one of the things I liked most about RED was that it was a stand alone film that starts and ends its story arc nicely.

I don’t know where the movie could go to next unless they work up a story that un-retires the gang for some “final mission”. Ironically if that final mission yeilds great boxoffice numbers, they might just make another one after that too.

Not saying they shouldn’t make it, but the film feels complete. Now if they manage to capture the same charm as the first one and do better, I won’t say no.

  1. Cully Hamner, one of the creators of the comic this was based on is finishing up a sequel graphic novel, so that could be inspiration. Ironicly the supporting cast that helped to make RED so entertaining in the first place are not in the original comic series, only Bruce Willis’s character. From an interview with Cully, he explained that the studio used the basic premise of Bruce’s character from the book and fleshed out the movie from there. Even the name/term RED was altered from the comic. In the book, it is meant as a status, RED = active agent, GREEN = inactive. That said Cully said he was fine with the changes they made and enjoyed the film. A sequel could be interesting but I agree I don’t know where you would go with it based on how the first movie ended.

  2. Caught up with Red last and loved it because it was a good setup and was a lot of fun. Great cast especially Bruce Willis. Not sure if I would want a sequel because they either have to setup the same type of premise with new characters or you put they estaclished characters in a new mission which would be totally different than what was setup in the first movie.

  3. I’m thoroughly enjoyed RED. It has charms and alot of fun. Watching Hellen Miren Kicked ass with that M2 does help too. Like you, i dunno about sequel. As the ending closed quite nicely…
