There is one simple rule in Hollywood that seems to go unchallenged. If a movie makes a ton of money it gets a sequel. So exception to the rule Independence Day – the Will Smith blockbuster that earned $817m on a $75m budget – seems to be the exception to that rule.
Ronald Emmerich said a while ago he had an idea for sequels to ID4 called ID4-Ever parts one and two. Now while I would slap him for using that title, I would however like to see stories in that world.
Worst Previews quotes Bill Pullman
“It would be a challenge, just creatively with the studio, how much money it would take to make it, whether Will [Smith] would come and do it and what the story would be,” he said. “[Emmerich] is one guy who may be able to pull it off. He doesn’t let it die. And people seem to want to hear that it’s gonna be done. There’s a twinkle in his eye when he talks about it.”
I would love the idea of an Independence Day 2. Showing what the world looked like AFTER that mess would be really cool.
Do they rebuild the white house? Do they achieve world peace after that inspiring speach about the world being one race? Do the aliens see this as a challenge and show up in force this time?
I’d have to hear the pitch before I get excited, but it is interesting to think about.
