Nolan Talks More Superman

Nolan has been caught monologing about Superman and I have to say I am encouraged. Not that Nolan has ever discouraged me!

Obsessed with Film says:

“…What it is, while David Goyer and myself were putting together the story for another Batman film a few years ago, you know thrashing out where we might move on from The Dark Knight, we got stuck. We were just sitting there idly chatting and he said ‘by the way, I think I know how you approach Superman‘.. and he told me his take on it. I thought it was really tremendous. It was the first time I’ve been able to conceive of how you’d address Superman in a modern context I thought it was a really exciting idea. What you have to remember about Batman and Superman is that what makes them the best superhero characters there are, the most beloved after all this time, is the essence of who they were when they were created, when they were first developed. You can’t move too far away from that.”

What’s that now? Picturing Superman in a real world???

Could this be the inkling of trying to get Superman to have the tone of reality that we have come to love with Batman?

I have said it before and I will again. Despite Nolan saying that Superman can’t exist in Batman’s world I have always said if any scribe can figure a way to do it, it would be Nolan. It always sounded to me that the Superman “as we know it” can’t exist in Batman’s world. It is very possible that a rebooted Superman handled with the care and involvement of Nolan would work perfectly fine with Bats.

People have a hard time imagining that a world where Superman exists that Batman is at all interesting and vice versa. But they exist in the same comics, and Worlds Finest works just fine too. Because they make it work.

Nolan can make it work. He doesn’t have to direct Superman, but his hand in it means its steering in the right direction.

      1. I dont see why not.

Superheroes are ALL animated to some degree (comic books, cartoons) and are translated to real and believable characters.

So they can both make the leap from page to screen, but not at the same time? I dont see why not.

      2. There is enough pseudo realism going on in Batman’s world that would allow for unreal things like a flying man from Krypton.

You think that nothing “normal” can exist because he isn’t?

Amazing that in a world where Superman exists people still drive cars and have normal lives. There is NO reason to suggest that because Batman isn’t superpowered that his world doesn’t make sense just because Superman exists also.

      3. I don’t care what Nolan said he intends to do (he also said he wouldn’t do more than 3 films for Batman – so we will see what happens after that when DC/WB is eager for a Justice League film) but it seems he is taking the same “make it real” approach to Superman.

When they steer th DC films (as they already said they would) to Justice League they certainly won’t be leaving Bats out.

Still doesn’t explain why they CANT co-exist just because Nolan says he won’t.

  1. I think this is a good thing. Nolan will bring us something new to the Superman movie franchise. He’s smart and probably will bring a “Batman Begins”-type reboot of Superman.

  2. I kinda wonder if you could tie them in with Kent growing up and discovering his abilities in Smallville while the news talks about the costumed vigilante in Batman. Pa Kent doesn’t trust men who have to hide their face for what they are doing, and when Batman becomes accused and hunted for Dent’s murder, it re-confirms the view. That can lead to Kent deciding to show his face, be a noble symbol in contrast to Batman.

It will also setup some of the animosity between the two for the eventual Batman/Superman or JLA film.

  3. *Nolan’s* Batman can’t exist in a world with Superman. We all know that Nolan has been giving us a more realistic portrayal of Batman, and a character like Superman would destory it all. That’s why I have a problem with a ‘Justice League’ film, because you can’t just exclude Batman from the team. Anyway, Nolan still insists that Batman and Superman will remain in a separate universe.

  4. I read this in Empire and it goes on to say that Superman wont be going gritty or dark. Nolan believes the essence of what they were when first created, meaning entirely seperate from Batman or the rest of DC, he talks about the difference between Marvel and DC characters, suggesting that the Avengers style of coexistance wont work for DC in his opinion.
