Paul WS Andersons Musketeers gets a Big Cast

The Three Musketeers will be returning to the big screen, this time at the hands of Paul WS Anderson. While that alone has me wondering, the cast looks to be shaping up alright… well mostly.

Rope of Silicon says:

Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson & the Olympians) is in negotiations to play D’Artagnan; Ray Stevenson (The Book of Eli) as Porthos; Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans) as Athos; Matthew MacFadyen (Pride and Prejudice) as Aramis; Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) as Cardinal Richelieu; Mads Mikkelsen (Clash of the Titans) as Rochefort; Milla Jovovich (Anderson’s wife and star of the Resident Evil films) as Milady de Winter who is described as ’17th century Bond girl’ and Orlando Bloom as the film’s nemesis, the Duke of Buckingham.

Ok, they had me on the fence until they said Orlando Bloom as the Duke of Buckingham.

Really? Bloom doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who could carry a lead badguy role like this. He exudes vulnerability and wide eyed optimism, but I just dont see this as a good fit.

Of course Anderson not only has boinking rights to Milla Jovovich, but once again he makes sure she is handy by staring her in one of his films.

I am skeptical about this cast (especially Bloom) and I will reserve judgement to see a trailer or something first.

And that it appears they are exploring the same adventure that was presented in the Disney Muskateers is discouraging. I would sooner see them hit up a different time in the Musketeers adventures and give us something new. Dumas’ D’Artagnan Romances tell more stories than just this and the Man in the Iron Mask.

  1. Nothing against the actor that has been cast as D’Artagnan but I think Kyle Schmid would be a better fit. If you don’t know who he is, feel free to google him, you won’t be sorry.

  2. I am curious about Bloom, I believe there’s potential in him. His role in Kingdom of Heavens already prooved that he’s capable for more than just “naive” roles. Orlando is definitly a guy that’s trying to prove his diversity at the moment. Playing the “Bad Guy” is not that far off the “Disillusioned Guy” he played in “Kingdom of Heavens”.

  3. I’ve yet to see a good Three Musketeers movie, unless, of course, one considers the Three Amigos to be one of them — and if that’s the case, it explains a lot about what makes a good Three Musketeers film (campiness and *not taking the source material seriously*). Seriously, this is a bad idea for a movie, with a proposed cast that would make a good idea seem like a bad one. There would be no way to take that movie seriously, so the only possible way it could work is as camp.

  4. Love the Musketeers adventures; Hate Andersons, so this is not a good day! And of course this is going to be a trilogy, unless the first one bombs. But if Andersons proved one thing during the past few years is that his ass sucking movies can make money.
So after those awful Resident Evil movies he is going to rape one of the most beloved adventure novel ever written. Anyone remembers the crafest that was THE MUSKETEER!?! Well, my bet is that it’s going to be at least as bad. And Jovovich as de Winter!!!!!!! please, this is ridiculous.

  5. I could more easily imagine Viggo Mortenson(sp?) as the Duke.

But I do agree there is more ground than the story of D’Artagan joining the group. Maybe this will be the start of a franchise?
