John Malkovich Confirms Vulture Role in Spider-Man 4

So we all know Spidey 4 is delayed until who knows when. I think Malkovich plays a great villain and can pull off pretty much any role. I found him best as Teddy KGB in Rounders. HOWEVER, I am having a hard time seeing him as Vulture. Another Spidey villain? Yes, but Vulture? I guess I will have to wait to see it.

ComingSoon.net gives us the story:

Malkovich was interviewed by an Italian sports show called “Quelli Che il Calcio” and he was asked not only about whether he had been approached to play the Vulture but also about the production delays. The fine folks at the Italian web site Bad Taste have graciously provided an English summation of what was said on the show:

“When conductor Simona Ventura asked him about his role of Vulture in the movie, he not only didn’t deny his involvement, but confirmed that he’s waiting for the final script to be sent to him, and that the movie has been delayed. He also hopes that shooting will begin as soon as possible.”

    1. Hardly. That Sony has decided to go this way may be a snub at Raimi, but also supports and proves Neill Blomkamp’s and Joss Whedon’s (both very public) opinion that Studios hire creative people then tell them not to be creative.

Studio interference happens with all studios, not just Fox. Not just Sony.

This just proves that the blind hate people issue Fox is just as ignorant as the blanket hate people are now spewing at Sony.

Do I think Sony is making a rash decision? Yes.
Do I think that Sony is a terrible studio? Not at all.

    1. Unfortunately, the odds of that happening are roughly equivalent to the odds of Isabel Lucas showing up at my house in nothing but a T-shirt and snow boots.

      Yeah…

    1. Marvel had no say in this decision at all.

Sony owns the film rights to Spiderman and they made this decision all on their own based on the circumstances in front of them.

I don’t like it, but it wasn’t anyone else’s call but Sony.

  1. That totally blows!

    Fuckin’ assholes are re-booting it…

    Tobey IS peter parker!

and isn’t he like married to the main guy at sony’s daughter?

I guess they couldn’t convince them on Vulture…

Fucked up #3 with that Venom bullshit!

    SAD DAY FOR SPIDEY FANS

      1. Why does it matter if one of cast members of Twilight gets a role in the reboot?

Just because Twilight was complete shit doesn’t mean they would be the same in a Spider-man movie. I say as long as they can act and look the part then let them be in the movie.

      2. Agreed. Thats just some blind nerdrage right there.

Its like when people assume that any Disney actor gets a “real” gig that its ruining everything. Judge them by their own body of work.

Don’t just spill blind hate at an individual because you dont like a franchise.

  2. As to whether or not Vulture would be a cheesy heavy…I recall seeing those early stills of Alfred Molina as Doc Ock and being unimpressed. Then Spidey 2 came out and those doubts vanished. Truth is one can make a comics villain look dumb (say, I guess…VENOM?) or interesting (Sandman) clever (New Goblin) or an actual menace (Doctor Octopus).

I think Vulture is written as more of a menace, looking very creepy, and perhaps even underestimated.

    However—

I am disappointed with the breaking ‘reboot’ news. It is uncalled for.

  3. His a good fit for The Vulture i guess but the character has never been one of my fav’s he doesn’t really have much going for him except he can fly abit with silly wings on his arms.

Anyone else thinking of that scene at the start of the Kick-Ass trailer….the one with the kid jumping off the building….

  4. Malkovich is perfect for vulture, he’s a great presence and can pull it off just showing up.

Ben kingsley woulda worked well too.

theres probally a storyline leading up to Lizard anyway..

    Lets get moving already!

  5. This has been on IMDb for like a month

There will be 6 movies so im not worried that the Lizard isnt on this one.

    But i have a question:
You guys im sure, are aware that Sony and Raimi are arguing over the script (Sony wants a known villain, Raimi wants the one he chose)
well, isnt the Vulture the one he always wanted?
Inst Sony NOT wanting the Vulture in this? So… there is a chance they call this off.
I wont be sure if next week Sony changes this, kicks the Vulture off and puts Lizard or someone else as the villain

    1. Sony reported wants Carnage as the villain, which after the Venom fiasco that seems like a stupid move. Give Raimi what he wants and he’ll make another good Spidey flick!

      1. Meli,
Yeah- isnt this guy supposed to be the DIRECTOR? Whatever happened to “full control over the film”
I would call him the producer and Sony the directors.

        Matt,
I say they leave Carnage for the Venom film

      1. Alright! We get to see Spidey’s origin story again, fuck yeah!

        Wait…hold on….damn.

I’ve got a baaad feeling about this. I don’t want to see another origin flick. I’m not totally against fresh blood, but a reboot to a successful franchise? Not liking this.

      2. @Matt, Sony was in complete control when they hired Raimi to do the first three.

        Credit where credit is due.

Who’s to say they don’t strike gold again? I personally think its too soon to do a reboot, but until it happens and we see it, we don’t know that it will be bad just because “Sony is in control”

  6. I like the choice, though I’m also left wondering why the Lizard is still on the back burner. I’m almost afraid that the 4th will flop and we’ll never get around to him or Mysterio.

Then again, if Raimi wins his battle over the script, I’m more than willing to give the 4th a chance. I loved the first two.

  7. They need someone like him to help the translation from book to screen not be too cartoony. Getting that right is always tough, but even just looking at this vulture pic, doesn’t the furrry collar and green bodysuit just scream ‘CHEESE?!!?’

  8. Weird. I’m kind of on the fence with this one. I like John Malkovich allot, most of the time, but I’m just not sure about him as Vulture either. I can kind of see it, but imagining his voice in my head as the Vulture just doesn’t feel right. Guess just have to wait and see.

Plus I’ve always felt the Vulture was kind of cheesy. I mean I like his story and all, but still. But then again, I remember feeling the same way about Doc Ock, before I saw how cool they made him. I’m sure they’ll make the Vulture’s suit really cool, with some awesome weapons and maybe the wings are huge blades or something like that.

  9. I thought all the spidey films sucked.. yes even 2, i m really not into this, only if they change Toby, i might think about it, but regarding vulture i think John would be good, but i thought he turned into a young guy, anyway i also dont think he a powerful enough villain on his own

    1. Ya, I really wanted to see Lizard more also. But I suppose it doesn’t surprise me. Raimi tends to lean towards the more “human” characters then the beast like ones. Like how he really isn’t partial to Venom.

Who knows though, maybe we’ll get lucky and there’ll be a set up in this one for the Lizard. Where Doctor Conners losses his arm in an accident, causing him to pursue a way to get it back. Which of coarse leads to the Lizard.

      1. In all honesty it shouldn’t be a surprise that Raimi is using The Vulture. If I remember correctly Raimi’s original take was to have The Sandman and The Vulture in SM3, but instead he was forced to use Venom.

      1. Well, maybe if they used The Lizard in the same way as the Kraven saga and made a dark movie. If done right, it could work. But I don’t really have to much love left for the franchise.
