Wizard of Oz ReReleased to Theaters

It’s been 70 years since The Wizard of Oz took patrons down the yellow brick road.

September 23rd fans will get the chance to see the film on the big screen just like they did nearly three quarters of a century ago.

Screen Crave shares:

The Wizard of Oz has an important place in history not just because of it’s box office success, but because of the effect it had on general public during the hardest economic crisis this country ever encountered.

The Wizard of Oz debuted in theaters in 1939 amidst the Great Depression in the United States. World War II was in the infancy stages and the country was wiped out by poverty. People needed escapism at that time more than ever. Dorothy, Toto, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, and The Cowardly Lion all took audiences on a much needed trip down the yellow brick road.

The last time the film was re-released in theaters was in 1955, and while re-releases rarely make financial sense, but this is one of those events that make perfect sense.

I hope it is screened somewhere near me so I can see this on the big screen myself.

  1. Even though I consider myself obsessed with movies I haven’t watched this movie since 2001 when I synced it to Dark SIde of the Moon. I honestly forgot so many little details that I need to see it again.

  2. I think it’s a cool idea, I’d certainly love to see it on the big screen! But no one will go see it… mainly cause there is no blood, guts or gore. There is no foul language or nudity. Plus the movie is filled with innocent fun that is sure to leave you with good thoughts afterward. So there you have it, this re-release will fail miserably. lol

    1. Ya, just like all the Disney, Pixar movies, and anything else with a plot that’s meant to make you feel all warm inside and happy to just be alive. Those movies always fail…

(Note the sarcasm as Up did extremely well this spring and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was number 1 last weekend.)
