Could Johnny Depp be playing Sinatra?

Just after we discovered that Martin Scorsese would be directing the biopic of Frank Sinatra’s life we now find out that Scorsese wants to use his favourite actor, Leonardo DiCaprio to star, but the studio is leaning toward a different leading man. Johnny Depp.

Deadline Hollywood shares:

Director Marty Scorsese may want Leonardo DiCaprio for the coming biopic about Frank Sinatra. (Just as Marty wanted Leo for Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, and soon Shutter Island.) But I hear Universal’s first choice to fill the role may be Johnny Depp.

Now Scorsese has a habit of getting his way but I really hope that Depp gets the role of the smooth legendary crooner. Personally I think he is a much better fit, and I say this as someone who thinks that DiCaprio can do no wrong. And despite resisting the urge to name drop Depp on any role in Hollywood, this is a good match for Sinatra.

Neither would be required to sing so that is not an issue. As part of the co-operation with Sinatra’s estate, original recordings would be used.

DiCaprio is a gifted actor, but he just doesn’t fit Sinatra at all.

  1. i don’t think that Depp fits the role but you never know he is known for morphing into different characters, though they are usually psycho in some way.

  2. I love Johnny Depp. But Leo is a much better fit for sinatra. He looks much more like him than Depp. They can both act the crap out of anything so that’s not really an issue.

And Leo is definitely not known as “howard hughes”. He’s done to many great characters before and after that.

  3. Whoever they cast, I’m sure it will be better than Ray Liotta’s Frank Sinatra.

But wait, ever hear of an actor doing two biographies?

DiCaprio is already Howard Hughes in our eyes. How can we be convinced that he is Frank Sinatra?

  4. I agree with MandarinOrange. I like Depp but he’s really overrated. I think DiCaprio has far more charisma and he can handle deeper roles. The only reason he gets put down is because of “Titanic” but anyone who’s seen “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” and then seen him ten years later in “The Departed” knows his range. Plus, everyone said he couldn’t play Howard Hughes and he got an Oscar nominiation.

Finally, Depp looks NOTHING like Sinatra. Not even close.

  5. Mark Ruffalo. I can see it happening… You can make him look like Sinatra. Plus he is already in Scorsese’s upcoming movie Shutter Island. and we know he loves to reuse people. I can see it happening.

  6. I think that DiCaprio should get the role. I am not a huge Depp fan. I think he is a little over rated. He seems to get a lot of the extravagant roles such as Edward, Jack Sparrow, Wonka ect. DiCaprio on the other hand has acted out normal characters with near perfection. I think he has a lot of natural charisma that I think would work well. Even that picture you have of I see DiCaprio in it more then I see Depp. I really hope he gets the role.

  7. I really don’t think Depp or DiCaprio suit this role. The actor must have the same charisma as Frank Sinatra for this movie to be any good. I just don’t see that same charisma from either actor.

  8. Toby Huss – the guy not only looks like Sinatra but can nail the voice as well. He’s more of a “C” level actor so he would never be considered, which is a shame.

  9. Please not Depp. He doesn’t come close to resembling Frank. They just want him for the bucks. I’m sick of hearing his name dropped for every major rumor. I like Johnny, don’t get me wrong. I just don’t think he can play everything like most seem to think. Cast DiCaprio. He’s a much, much better fit.
