Bryan Singer talks Superman Returns Sequel

Looks like Bryan Singer is setting his sights on the Big Blue Boyscout. In a recent interview he states pretty clearly that the sequel to Superman Returns is well underway.

SuperheroHype quotes Singer:

“I’m just getting back with writers after the strike. We’re just in the development phase. I’m starting to develop a sequel…with the intention of directing it,” he told the magazine.About the negative reaction to the first film’s focus on the drama instead of the action, Singer added, “The first one was a romantic film and a nostalgic film… And now that the characters are established, there’s really an opportunity to up the threat levels.”

Now before we all get on the barking list against Superman Returns, I wasn’t overly impressed with it. That being said I also didn’t hate it.

Singer is just one of those people I have to trust with Superman. He did fine by me with XMen and though he didn’t put out the best Superman movie, I can forgive him considering the work he has done in the past. He is also a big geek and I would hope that he learns from his mistakes.

So with Singer moving forward, Routh almost a sure thing to play Supes, and all of our hopes that a Superman sequel wont suck, Singer has just one thing to do to make it all right.

Do everything different.

1. Get rid of superkid. No really. Kill the kid. Make this the driving force that tempts Superman’s morals. What happens when you piss off the most powerful superhero ever? Will he kill out of rage? Vengence?

2. Get us a superpowered badguy I like Lex as much as anyone. He is an awesome villain – no doubt. But lets have Superman face someone that makes him flinch.

3. Action We need a LOT of action. Have superman stop a meteor shower from colliding with earth. Just kicking the shit out of every last rock, tearing his outfit up, slapping him around. Save the world dammit. And do that before the opening credits. Then do better for the rest of the movie.

4. Get over Lois I know its the archetype of the character, but for ONE MOVIE lets not have Superman be smitten to a flaw and distracted by it. Let him be distracted by his own conflict that drives his character. “You can’t save them all”. That is more of a cornerstone of the Superman persona than anything. It defines him and he has to live with it every day. All this power and STILL people suffer.

So Mr Singer, I hope you are reading this. (Don’t all movie writers read this site?? Why not??)

  1. It`s sad brandon routh won`t be hired for the next superman film.He is parfect for the part. They got to get a new lois lane kate bosworth is not attractive she is plain looking. They have to get a beautifull and gorgeous lois lane that is breath taking to look at and very desirable and beautifull to fall in love with..That would make the film more enjoyable and worth watching. Also the film shoudn`t be too long only 2hrs.And it should be a good mix of action, romance, fun, entertaining, adventurous, and brilliant story and great special effects

    1. And is apparently a sick boy who has been in and out of the hospital all his life. Watch the movie.

He has his own weaknesses, no clue about how to use his powers and no indication he is invulnerable.

So far all we know about him is that he is strong, and only when he panics.

  2. I think that Singer should really look at the comic stories of Supermans life even beyond lois and into the future. There has to be more action. The only thing that keeps and Super hero movie alive and kicking at the box office is total action. Might be expensive, but it works.

    Rodney

  3. noooo dont kill the kid are u crazy just having the kid makes it even better not only does it cause drama of richard soon finding out n them breakn up but superman wont be alone howeva i do agree with vengence how will superman react when his one and only son gets hurt , not die , we dont want that . superman will be more determine he will push himself over the limit not only to protect the world but the ones he truly loves

  4. To Bryan Singer,

A very good idea on what type of nemesis superman should face is the type that could hurt him physically, we all know that Supes is vulnerable to Krypto but we miss the fact that he can also be hurt by Magic and dark powers. Why don’t we create a movie that has the settings of Constatine, where demons are slowly coming out to invade the world, try to create a character that would send a very strong demon that can hurt our Man of Steel, it would be a good preparationg to create The Death of Superman Movie in the future. The end plot should be Superman beating the demon but the defeated foe would warn the Man of Steel for the coming of a stronger Demon( Doomsday). Hope Bryan would think about this, more action and Supes can kill the Demon here.

  5. Oh and anouther thing, lois should find out clark is superman. It would fit. I mean it would be perfect. Im making this movie up in my head now as i type this. Lots of fight senes, make supes bleed, NO LEX, and throw in some clark senes too.
So this is how lois should find out about clark…….. so lois and clark are in lexcorp labs and they stumble across a piece of kryptonite… well, clark becomes the way he is when around the stuff so lois puts the pieces together and finds out

  6. I don’t think they should kill the kid off. I think that the movie should happen like years later and the kid is now the teenager. then like Superman is like getting old then right? the kid and Superman meet up and like the kid in the end becomes the new superman after the REAL superman is killed protecting him. It sounds corny but I think if you did it right, it would be kind of cool. and i dont want hate mail from you ppl, i love superman, but i think thats why they even put the kid in there. otherwise it would be pointless.
Oh, and if anyone should be killed off its that fianze of lois’s, ya, kill off richerd.
and anouther thing, NO MORE LEX!!!! make him like a side villian, but lets get some new ppl in here K?

  7. You have no idea what your are talking about, Singer picked up where the last Superman movie left off. The movie needed to explain what happend to Lois, also you can’t kill superman’s kid, he is superman’s child and killing his kid or lois wouldn’t fit the story at all. you clearly know nothing about superman if you think that would be better, superman always saves lois and definately would always saves his child. Also Singer believes in the story line as much as he believes in the action that goes with it, i loved superman returns and i am excited to see his next film!

  8. I think the The Man of Steel villian has to be Doomsday. It is time to see a supreme power against Superman. Something more powerful then even him. A comic book movie is only as good as it’s villians.(The Dark Knight,Spider Man 2,The Incredible Hulk, even Daredevil)A seriuos threat to the hero is what makes it interesting.DOOMSDAY!

  9. Simulated Spideyboy? You know that Spiderman is Marvel so he will never be in a movie with Superman right?

And that “superman can beat …” line is weak. Superman can beat anyone given the situation. Its old and tired and has been beaten to death. A superhero isnt less cool because superman can beat him.

  10. I thought Returns was surprisingly good. Routh, good choice. I think casting Spacey as Lex was horribly wrong. He lacked the charisma and style that Hackman presents. Bosworth, good actor but no Lois. How the hell can spiderboy be such an idol? he sucks. Clark could defeat spidey with a can of raid. Returns fell seriously short attracting the younger crowd to include my child. Need more action. Come on were talking about Superman I mean super says it who the hell likes spiders. I like the idea someone said bring Lobo, or have supe destroy a simulated spideyboy.

  11. Wow. You re going to find yourself in a really really small minority there.

The latest batman films were inspired, and the first two Spidey films were great too. I loved all the XMen films though the third is the least appreciated.

But to say Returns was the best and the rest suck? Your opinion is respected, but dont expect many to agree with you. Ever.

  12. I grew up watching the old Chis Reeves Superman movies and I was skeptical about wasting my money to go watch another movie about Superman. I figured they’ll screw up the movie like all the homo Spider man movies, and the gay Batman movies (the Joker sucks too), and latest X-Men movie. Well, this one blew away every Superman movie, including all the other super hero movies. Superman Returns exceeded my expectations. The cinematic scenes were mind blowing. The flying scenes were so awesome. The music scores, wow! This Superman had balls! Coming back from almost being killed, to digging out the Island and flying it into space, then falling back to earth, another Wow! This movie had the right amount of action, it wasn’t overkill. I wanted the movie to keep on going it was so much fun to watch. That’s awesome, Superman had a son. Compare that to Spider man who can’t even screw his wife because he keeps thinking about his grandma and needs her permission. With all the rubber suits Batman wears he probably has a rubber dildo he has to put on. Wolverine only screws animals probably. It’s no wonder why these other super hero’s don’t have kids. I used to like Spider man, Wolverine, and Batman, but all their movies fucked up it for me. Spider man is a homo, Wolverine is a basically a barking chi-wa-wa, and then there’s the fuck’n Home Depot, Tim the Tool Man, Throat Cancer Batman. Superman Returns is the best superhero movie I’ve ever seen. Hell, it was great movie period! The Director did a great job! I don’t care about Superman comics, nor the television show, but this movie made me a fan.

  13. I agree, more action. Listen to the new generation. The future is always changing and the past sucks(some things). Make peoples spines get the chills. I have super graeat ideas for the sequel, but would like to discuss them privetely.

  14. Except the next movie wont be a sequel.

It is very likely they will go back to the beginning with an origin story that leads into a new franchise.

And Megan Fox might make a great Wonder Woman poster, but honestly she is too scrawny to play an amazon.

And Stiffler would be a poor choice for Flash. Flash might be comic relief and witty lines, but that guy just plays a loser or a slacker. Flash is neither. “That Stiffler Guy” will always be known as that because he can’t play anything but.

    Just sayin.

  15. what they should do is start off the next movie days before krypton explodes as jor-el is trying to convince everybody that the planet is about to explode. i know it was done in the first movie but i was thinking more like the superman cartoon. that way you could have brainiacs story and his set-up for the movie. i like the idea of multiple enemies but as minor ones. after the rocket leaves krypton fast forward 30 years as superman is finishing a battle with parasite that has left downtown metropolis in ruins. then at the end of the movie show a quick hint at the inevitable formation of the jsa and THAT movie with hopefully megan fox as wonder woman and stiffler ( from the american pie movis. i dont know his name) as the flash.

    just my 2 cents

  16. Two villains is not “done to death” … two is just a good number to fit in a movie without going overboard. Spidey three crossed into 3 villains and everything suffered for it. You want six?

More characters and more challenges are called SEQUELS. Who would you put in part 2 after you have wasted these adversaries in worthless scenes all crammed in one movie??

You can’t add anything without taking away from something else. I dont know what world you live in, but a 2 hour movie with 6 villains, and still deal with something epic, and have combat scenes, as well as dealing with Kal’s normal human life. It would be a collection of 10 minute shorts not worth watching… do the math.

You can have your opinion. I can also discuss the reason why my opinion differs so greatly from yours. You think I am an ass for challenging your “perfect idea”? That is also your opinion. Shame you can’t back up your opinion into a discussion.

  17. Two villains has been done to death. I want to see more and I am not the only one. And now your attacking the characters i have selected? That was just an example of how easy would be to add characters I dont care wich characters i just want to see more. More Characters and more challenges. You dont have to be an ass about it. Everyone should be entitled to their own opinion. Who are you to deny someone that right?

  18. Using Lobo as an excuse to tell Supes that Darkseid is coming is not only a waste of the character, but completely pointless. Lobo is so low on the list of potentials for filmmakers to include in Superman mythos, and the majority of the target audience for a Hollywood film could care less about him.

Lobo is lame and has a very limited following let alone something worthwhile putting in the film.

I am glad they have actual writers in charge of this instead of some fanboy who thinks that it can’t be action oriented with only two villains.

  19. well a couple of the “badguys” could have minor roles as an introduction for future movies. But most of all, you forget that each and every character has a story, a reason for being there. Just follow the story and make it come to life.

  20. And I suppose you are the pro then??

Sorry Clarck… your idea is pure fanwank. Just putting characters in to appeal to the fans while having NO real purpose for them – that goes above and beyond fanservice and reduces it to fanwank.

Sorry you don’t know a good idea from bad. Six badguys in a movie would be POINTLESS. No developement, no story, no character.

    Fanwank.

  21. OK first of all i admire your sceptisism however, We have seen enough superhero movies where there is 1 or 2 bad guys. We need action and lots of it. Not saying that they have to follow my thoughts exactly, Honestly i just came up with that off the top of my mind there are many differant ways that they can go about a good script. My only point is to give the fans what they want and deserve, one hell of a good action movie
With villains doesnt have to be 6 but lets be reasonable no matter what scenerio they put him in he is going to win he is freakin Superman. Give the audience the feelling that maybe he wont win this time.
Fanwank? Go back to your comics buddy leave the movies to the pros!!

  22. So how are you going to have 6 villains and still think there will be time for some good old fashioned Clark Kent stuff?

That was the WORST idea for a movie I have ever heard. If I found out they were going with SIX villains in the next Superman, I would have no hope for the franchise.

Thankfully they are scrapping the existing franchise and rebooting it.

And they will hire a writer who knows how to make a “damn good movie” instead of fanwank like you suggest.

  23. Hi i’m new to this site. I have a comment to make on the begining topics, about what characters to use in the next movie. Some say Lex, others say Doomsday, or Bizzarro, or Darkside, or Lobo, or Brainiac. I say give them what they want! Lobo comes to Earth in search of Superman, to ask for help in battle. Darkside’s reign of terror has reccently destroyed Lobo’s home planet. Superman confused and a bit in shock from this new visitor refuses to help. Lobo takes offense and picks a fight with Superman. the battle is so INTENSE the ground shakes buildings shake. With a tiny fragment of Kryptonite Lobo manages to punch Superman so hard that blood came from his mouth and landed on the street. Thats when Lobo tells him that Darkside is heading for Earth anyday, and he wont stop untill every single planet in the galaxy is destroyed. Superman had no choice but to help Lobo. Afterwards Lex manages to gather some of the blood frome the fight scene, and uses it to clone Superman (Blood works better than hair) creating Bizzarro. So Superman gets caught up in a intergalactic war being led by Darksideand to conquer Earth and at the same time stop Luthor and Bizzarro from tearing up the streets of metropolis. With only the help from the unstable loose cannon Lobo. And still have time for all the Clark Kent stuff (Just not too much)

AND THAT IS A DAMN GOOD MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Superman Returns is a very good film that could have been better. The sequence with the airplane was very exhilerating, uplifting, exciting and very emotional.Brandon Routh is a great looking and wonderfull Superman.Bryan Singer is a talented director that made Superman Returns an entertaining ,original, and fun film to watch.Superman has The Power of the Gods, but his girlfriend isn`t hot. They should get Superman a sexy, beautifull girlfriend that is attractive and hot.

  25. I am a huge Superman fan of all the Christopher Reeves movies of the 70s and 80s.Superman 2 and The Dark Knight are the two best superhero movies ever made. I was very excited when I was going into the theater to see Superman Returns. I was shocked to hear the same theme music in the opening credits as in the earlier movies and that made my expectations of the movie even greater. However I was somewhat in denial
about how the movie kinda let me down because I was such a big fan of the earlier franchise. I mean goddammit when superman returns, shit he has to fucking return and leave a lasting impression.
First of all their was not nearly enough eye popping action that will just make you say damn!! and why the fuck does superman have a son. If Bryan Singer is so talented he could have made a
Superman with a love story and lots of action like in superman 2. I even hated the opening sequence with Lex Luthor. I didnt like Kate Bosworth at all as Lois Lane and I could barley tolerate the Jimmy Olsen charcter.
Superman Returns does not even deserve to use the same theme music
as the earlier franchise. The movie wasnt a total let down but they should have just totally remade the movie with out any reference to the old movie
and Superman should have never left earth because that sounds lame. The movie should have had new theme music even though the old one is priceless. Routh made for a good Superman but could have been a way better Clark or maybe thats the writers fault. Im pretty sure the sequel will be alot better but its hard to forgive them for giving Superman a son, I mean thats some shit you put in the last installment of new Superman franchise. Kevin Spacey had the look of a Lex Luthor but should have been alot meaner. This movie didnt even earn its PG-13 rating like The Dark Night. I rate Superman returns on the same level as Superman 3.

  26. all this said, it will be interesting to see where they are going with this…. a new beginning. But still talk of keeping Luthor in the sidelines..wonder why…. with so many other villians to concentrate on why even have a little taste of Lex in the picture…I think Lex should take a nice vacation to the Bahamas and rethink his evil plans..lol *Spacey does a great Lex.

  27. In the Superman Returns sequel, in my thoughts, Luthor kidnaps Superman’s son, and should jam the very last crystal into him … turning him into Doomsday! Superman battles Doomsday to the death, not knowing that it’s his own son. At the end of the battle, Doomsday dies and reverts back into the boy. We’ll have a classic scene where Supes is holding his son in his arms, screaming into the sky with white hot rage. Superman is primed to kill Luthor, and must battle himself not to. This would get rid of the boy respectfully, and darken the relationship of Supes and Luthor even more. Want more info on my story? Call me at 513 884 4854. Thanks, Gerald Cooper.

  28. Rodney*

Thank you for the links! Wow, well I look forward to this trilogy idea.. Millar should be great! I hope they do put them out there like they have done with Harry Potter, that keeps things going at a great pace…and the fans biting at the bit …….(=

  29. And those are OLD stories.

    https://www.themovieblog.com/2008/09/millar-talks-superman-reboot-and-kickass-budget

    https://www.themovieblog.com/2008/10/brandon-routh-may-still-be-superman

Updated stories are indicating that they are scrapping the “Man of Steel” project and moving forward with a reboot. A movie series in a planned trilogy that is more in line with Batman Begins and Dark Knight. All DC franchises are being treated like this.

And the Justice League project was killed BEFORE they announced the Superman Reboot.

  30. Rodney,

I keep reading we are getting a second movie to Superman Returns, possibly involving Braniac, filming to take place in 2009 sometime? Per Brandon, Bryan and others, they keep calling it “The Man of Steel..hmmm.. if you have a current source of more accurate info. please do list it. I would like to read it.
    It would be a horrible mistake to cast a different Batman and Superman for the Justice League! They have established our hero’s and they PERFECT! Leave em alone! just a little note.. (;

  31. I’ve been entertained by all the formats of ‘Superman’ going back over the years from comic book to cinema. I’m not looking for perfection of incredible stunts but a reasonable storyline where everything eventually gels. I loved the Christopher Reeve films, although Superman 111 wasn’t my favourite. ‘Superman Returns’ was an excellent introduction to the new era and if Bryan gives the Lois character some more backbone, his next Superman adventure should be even better. Please remember this isn’t supposed to be a Mensa Mind Assault Course , just a couple of hours of sitting on your backside in a comfortable chair watching a screen and enjoying a great time away from everyday life.

  32. @Mazy, you are missing out on a LOT of topics we have already discussed in great length on this site.

The JLA project has been canned, Superman Returns is not getting a sequel, and DC/WB has already announced that they are Rebooting Superman to keep it in line with the new franchise to eventually lead up to a JLA film much like Marvel is doing with Avengers.

    Just sayin

  33. Well, as someone old enough to remember the previous 4 Superman films, I loved the first and was horribly disappointed with the latter 3. Superman Returns, while clearly an homage to the spirit and tone of the 1978 original, bears little resemblance to the lame camp hokiness of Superman II, III, or IV. It may not have been the widespread blockbluster that 2005’s Batman Begins was, but it showed potential for the franchise being ressurrected.

A super-powered villain to do battle in the next film would be a great shot in the arm for the franchise. Brandon Routh was superbly cast and it would be a shame not to see him again. Aside from him, Sam Huntington (Jimmy Olson) and Frank Langella (Perry White) would be welcome returnees. The rest of the characters have already served their purposes.

I hope that the studio recognizes the power and appeal of superhero franchises. Marvel seems intent on launching an Avengers franchise with the roots of which were already planted in last summer’s Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk. DC/Warner would be wise to push the Superman followup to the front of the development line before trying to cash in on the proposed Justice League film, which I’ve heard will have new actors cast as Batman and Superman (BIG mistake).

  34. @Aurora, you are a little behind in your reading. The proposed “Man of Steel” sequel was shelved and they are now rebooting the entire series. I guess they felt they couldnt come back from this corner they painted themselves into, so they are wiping the slate clean and starting over.

Use the search feature at the top of this page and you will find updated news about this development.

  35. I have to ad something else. I agree with Jondoe….I think the movie was wonderful. Most don’t even think about the effort and hard hard work it takes to make a movie of that magnitude!
One more thing, do keep the love scenes, as a woman thats just one of many reasons why we adore Superman, his heart, compassion & so forth. You know I realize that there’s this history with Lois, but with the last movie Superman Return’s there’s also that opening to stir things up, that opportunity to add new elements.
    * Marry her off to Richard, which I already mentioned, they can be friends..I know it’s not the way the comics have written it, but thats ok…this Lois has lost her spunk, I don’t think Kate was the best choice for Miss Lane.
    * Bring some old enemies back or create a new one
    * Introduce a new love interest, Ok….here it is: Krypton, chaos, the ship was prepared to send Kal-El to earth…but unknown to anyone another Scientist, perhaps one that wasn’t well known to many, widowed, with a baby girl…and now the planet is going to…..”BOOM” and him beside himself with worry about his only child and her life! He did what any father would do in his position, stole the peices needed to build a ship at his home….there were other threats to consider as well. The evil that had plagued Krypton, (villains). He had been working on a special project for nearly 10 years and was in it’s final testing stages, he was preparing to present it to the council. Then this, destruction of thier world. So, instead he gave it to his baby girl…a gift to protect her, he hoped, he wasnt certain of all it’s properties….a small beautiful crystal with amazing powers, he prepared it as a knecklace and placed it around her kneck….The crystal was clear adn a brilliant white inside, when worn emitted a property of sorts that would completely mask the true origin and identity of it’s wearer. Although with no time to complete hi work, he was not totally aware of all it’s abilities/side effects. This gift was his last hope for the freedom and new life for his daughter, a risk, but one he was willing to take for their was no other hope.
The ship launched the exact same time as Kal-Els… n’ Krypton was lost.
As Kal-Els ship crash landed …he was found and raised by two loving humans. Her ship also crashed and was found by …………………….cant tell ya everything…….
Life was pretty normal, other than there was somewhat of a mystery/blank spot in her life, she had no idea she was different…? Or that it was the knecklace that protected her identity. Until……..her 25th birthday, she began to have strange dreams….images of strangely dressed people, a place she had never seen, and at times this horrible pain which racked her body….sending her to her knees…..Superman to was effected, a pain in his head, a slight dizziness, but breif ……
Emma was a beautiful woman with long pitch black hair, falling just below the middle of her back…it was thick with subtle waves. She kept it parted just off center and as it fell, it brought out her peircing violet eyes with long black lashes and lips a deep dusty rose, plump and full, her skin wwhite as porclain, soft.
She was a nice height, 5’8 with a very shapely figure, nice muscle tone..with legs that didn’t end, to which she covered in blue jeans mostly. Emma was a casual woman, active….and proactive…always helping others.
But the pain she felt grew….and then these images, people, now names & voices whixh were no longer in just her dreams, they surfaced now while she was awake and bent over filling her head….to much!! So much to the point she would pass out, lying on the floor of her apt. unconcious.
A name she heard over and over, Kal-El…..Kal-El….driven by some underlying need she packed a back pack got in her car and began to drive, where was she going? Where was her, this feeling taking her?

Metropolis: Clark confused and concerned wondering what was happening to him? ..looked for answers in his fortress….his dreams now to invaded, by a ghostlike image of a young woman with pitch black hair. Driven……….

I have the rest of the story…. I think this would be an interesting new addition to Supermans heart…..naturally it needs..”tweeking”..lol

    Nite
    * Aurora
    I love stories!!!!

  36. Looks like there is going to be another sequel “The Man of Steel” at least this is what I have read. Possibly another after thatas well. I hope so, I love the Superman movies and I hope they don’t darken it up to much, that’s something else I read…. The Batman movies were good, but I didn’t care for how dark they made them… visually.
When I heard that Spiderman was coming out I though, eeek! What if thats dark? But it was fantastic! You could actually see him swinging from building to building, and climb walls etc..very cool.
There’s also been so much talk about Batman and Superman… just wondering when or if they will ever have them pair up or will there be a “Justice League” movie? I know there was some chatter about who is tougher, can Batman whoop Supemans butt? I’m going to have to giggle at that and say, umm NO!!!!!!
    Supermans the main man!

    Nuff said….(o=

  37. I agree about the giving him a hot scene!! Let him experience that and fight with who he wants to be again, kind of like in Superman II. (Superman or a normal human being without superpowers). That has always been great about his story, him struggling with who he wants to be and weather or not he can be with Lois.

Maybe while he is exploring this, something terrible happens. Maybe a new villain comes about.

  38. Where do I start,
First of all they definately picked the RIGHT Super Man for the job. Brandon Routh was excellant. He captured the character so well. The pain in his eyes, the fury… absolutely is “The Man”. Give him more though!! Really he can handle it.. I liked the movie!!!!(more about Brandon)
Yeah yea, the Lois stuff, she was boring! Wheres that personality? Lois is a spitfire! Lois was boring, sorry…the kid? hmmm, they sort of shmooozed over all that…5 years, messes with Lois, spurt a kid… now what are they going to do with him? And he is a whimp? FIX IT!

Superman deserves a good hot scene!! Give that poor guy a hot luscious, steamy romantic moment for god’s sakes!! He needs it! A new element needs to be brought in….villians!! He can take em!! I agree!!!
Really, he is the man of steel and then some……Brandon did a great job!! Keep him!!! he is SUPERMAN… his acting was awesome, Clark they need to include him more too.. I love that character, goofy and clumsy, sweet, innocent…like a little lost pup… but then when he removes those glasses for a moment, or has that look……it’s the best!
Did he get an apt? I have a room for him… hehhee

Lex was fabulous! What a great choice of actors for that part… His side kick was not bad as well. I hate it when they try to change the character, example… Freddy Prinze? in the scooby-doo movie? As if!.. and I like Will Smith as an actor, he’s fabulous! But, who’s screwed up idea was it to cast him as Jim West? OMG! Wild Wild West could have been a hit if cast properly and a better storyline, didnt anyone see the TV show?!!!! What a blotch!
And so on, Bewitched, screwed that up with Will F, and a stupid story…Ugh… Speed Racer.. Umm, crap!…..and it goes on….

I am a huge fan of superman, x-men and so on… always have been always will be.
I think that they brought him back and did a awesome job!! Brandon your absolutely Yummy, *yep….Perfect! The suit was awesome!! Great colors, loved the blue eyes, the hair.. he worked it so good! He is SUPERMAN!!!
I agree with the other guys, give him some major butt smashin scenes, etc.. He was a part of the Justice League, get some Nasty Dudes from there and let them have at it!! Dont know about the dog thing that EasyRyder said… but they certainly didnt use all of his MIGHT!

Jimmy Olsen was awesome! Perry…was a little soft spoken.. he needs more umph….The effects were fabulous… he looked so fluid in flight… his body was well proportioned, perfect…the filming was really really good. His acting was again, wonderful! He is Super man….

I wrote this amazing idea for another movie. Right here, then thought well I like it!!! I think I will develope more, then put it out there, all they can do is ignore it?
It’s all about a new Lady I want to introduce to the MAN….. its perfect!!
A horrible storm out of nowhere!! Eating metropolis!! A young woman screaming in bitter pain… jumps to her death? Who is she?
I know who she is etc……

    nite,
    **Aurora

  39. EggXactlyyyyyy !! .. Dustin hits the nail right on the head … Bingo !! .. supes could take all of the other wannabe superheroes (batman included) in one blink of an eyelid … and when you have such a superduper manyou make one hell of a movie … not fcking have him lift a island and looking like a dog who has lost his bone … you damn bring a supervillian and you make the movie one big rollercoaster of a slugfest …

  40. Yeah, so I don’t know what the hell you wanted out of the first remake of Superman. I thought it was a well done movie with a good blend of heart and action, and wonderful visual effects. I mean we’re probably going to get 2 more films (I hope) and you can’t give it up all at once. Most of the people on this board seem like a bunch of whiners who are never happy with anything. If we’re comparing it to the superhero movie from the last decade it’s by far the best. I mean I hated the last 3 spiderman movies, shitty cgi’s, boring script, the 3rd one was a little better cause it got darker but these movie seemed like they were made for kids. Superman Returns struck me as a grown-up superhero film. The X-men movies were much better, still too flashy and so out of touch with reality. And then there’s the Hulk……hmm…well shit. So I guess to me Superman was the only one to get it right. Oh, yes I left out Batman, not bad, but I couldn’t get pass the fucking voice. Oh yeah and just to piss eveyone off Superman could kill Spiderman, Batman, All the X-men, and the Hulk with one bitch slap.

  41. Neomtb, If you could take a short term contract job if it meant giving up your security in a long running tv series? I really think Tom Welling has the chops to be a serious actor, but I don’t think he would be the next Russell Crowe either. Michael Rosenbaum is moving into feature films, as well as Kristen Kruek.

Sometimes TV is a place for actors to hone their craft, other times its all they can get, and sometimes A list actors settle into TV roles too. There is no rule.

Smallville is about Superman’s humble beginnings (albeit paralell to other incarnations) and about his humanity. This season kicked off with some imagery that clearly sets the stage for the next phase in Supermans life. Lois and Clark sitting across from each other in the Daily Planet’s bullpen.

Superman has always been about his humanity. The irony is that he is more human despite his alien origins and this was all because of his upbringing. Yeah, its cool to see him be all superpowered, but its not interesting if he is a flat 2 dimensional character who just lifts and punches things.

  42. Rodney – if the smallville actors could get gigs as A-listers don’t you think they would take them? They are B-grade at best and will most probably always be – and the majority got in because they’re pretty. I don’t see any ugly people in smallville. At least they’re not busting their butts in a standard slave job like most people.

I’ don’t care that Aaron Ashmore ‘s brother is iceman in the X-men triology, that dosen’t mean he’ll get a gig. Its the last season of smallville anyway time will tell.

It’s not ignorance & its not a rule its observation fanboy.

Its good that you seem to like anything to do with ‘S’ & don’t discriminate between the various interpretations. The simple thing is & I see some people who comment here agree it’s time for change. Surely you must be open to this if you really like Smallville which has made massive re-interpretations. I just want to see “S” be SUPER not human. He’s a hero – in a movie he should be doing stuff that makes fans (old & new) idolize him. We were all drawn to ‘S” by his powers first off.

  43. I give Singer props for doing a tribute to the movies of old…

With that said he should of let the past stay where it was. Now Superman is going to need an extreme make over. If anything Superman should wake up from a deep sleep in space as his ship is returning to earth only to find that DarkSeid has set his sights on earth. Ok Lex is an opposite of what Superman stands for but come on DARKSEID is truely the polar opposite of our favorite hero.

No duh that’s the reason why he was the great threat on the Justice League Unlimited finale. Darkseid despair, Superman hope. The fight scene alone would rack up enough in box office sales to make the Dark Knight look like a blockbuster night at home.

All the Ideas that everyone has submitted I could not agree more. There has to be a change. The times have changed, the comics have changed and hell the fans have changed. Bryan if you read this I personally loved Superman Returns I saw if 17 times in theaters but not because it was a good movie (it was) but because I’m a fan and I support the cause. I don’t know what the future holds for a new movie, but you do have insight on tone and story but the action and true heart of the comics is what a new Superman film should be about. I’m a huge fan of the Superman/Batman comic it’s the true portrayal of Superman and Batman. The new Batman films have done just that stuck with the comics to the core. I don’t agree that a new villain should be created that would piss off a lot of people specially if he’s lame like the sun dude in Superman 4. Darkseid is the best and it could be trilogy worthy (who am I kidding it would definitely be trilogy worthy) or Brainiac he’s got enough history with Kal-El to last a decade of movies. Hell if you were gonna redo the classic you should’ve of gone with Superman: Action Comics’ portrayal of Zod that was awesome.

Research and find the best story to make it believable to fans and non fans alike. No comic book movie will ever be relatable to real life but for a hero as unbelievable as Superman for all his strength and glory you gotta go with the heart of the fans and a little realism for the not so fanly people that’s how you get the box office buyers going especially in this economy. The only way to make people buy in on Superman is to show them what he sees, the lives he can’t save. Through all his attempts not everyone gets the happy ending and Darkseid (I know I keep bringing him up) is the one bad guy bad ass enough to stand toe to toe and be able to have incredible lines, like Heath Ledger. That would give the movie the edge it truly needs to stand toe to toe with box office greats like Dark Knight.

Lastly Mr. Singer let me say, you must of felt like Superman during the making of this film. The power of production, like the film was cardboard and you were Superman. That people constantly judge what you do it was a huge film and you did what you felt was right. No one was in your position or had your vision. At the end of the day you did your best and it was great you weren’t picked for doing what everyone else wanted you were picked because that’s what was supposed to happen. Could it have been better? Come on hind sight is 20/20 doesn’t get much clearer than that.

Im sorry for going on for so long but it had to be said.
    Yours truly Kal-El’s greatest fan.

  44. I was a BIG fan of Superman I & II, but III & IV were horrible. I had great expectations for Superman Returns and think Singer had his hands full trying to avoid making a whole new Superman from scratch. So, I get the story line to make up for lost time and I think Lex’s entrance into the move was perfect. I knew Kevin Spacey would be GREAT. When talk began of a new Superman movie, he was my first choice. Brandon was also a great choice, he needed to be an unknown. Let’s face it, anyone besides Reeves was going to get hammered by the media. I totally agree that Kate Bosworth was a horrible choice for Lois Lane. Forget teh fact that the comic gives Lois a tougher exterior, she’s supposed to be a New York City reporter. Hello… I couldn’t think of many actresses that could have filled the shoes of Margot Kidder, but Jennifer Donnelly would have been better. When I seen her in HULK, I was ticked off that Singer hadn’t gotten her first. She has the age, the personality, and the LOIS LOOK. Oh well. The kid was a mistake. And since we didn’t really see him use super powers, Lois should say that she had him after Supes left.

  45. @Neomtb, “The Smallville actors aren’t good enough for the big screen thats why they are on TV.”

I couldn’t disagree more. Any one of these actors could make a successful leap to the big screen. “Jimmy Olsen’s” twin brother only does big screen gigs and Tom Welling has had a few big films to his name already (granted his last one was a stinker)

It is pure ignorance to assume they are on TV because they are not good enough for movies. There are examples of this rule you made up, but it is by far not absolute.

  46. Wake up to yourselves. The studio cares about box office receipts not if its deemed as good or bad by die-hard fans who are to hard to please – because frankly most want any film to mirror the comic.

    Its a movie adaptation!

If the hype is correct and WB plan to start afresh and plan to coordinate the movie with other projects similar to Marvel with the Avengers – I for one applaud this, it means a better movie that will move away from the traditional boy scout image which is lame. The comics I’ve read about S in the last few years seem to suggest a move away from this persona.

Superman movies should be doing the same as Batman movies in terms of people going to see it & currently I doubt they do.

Smallville is Smallville and leave it at that – the writers/directors won’t let CK fly. Most would agree that CK could fly by that age & plenty of other Kryptonians do in Smallville. They limit him too much. The Smallville actors aren’t good enough for the big screen thats why they are on TV.

Anyway we could all put our views up its going to be 2-3 years before anything is out.

  47. All the Superman Movies, TV shows and Comics follow the same theme. Smallville helped me understand what made Lex Luthor, and Superman’s, beliefs, atttitudes and values. Mr. Singer went into that aspect in his “Superman Returns.” The child, well that gave future sequals many possibilities. I don’t believe most of the bloggers want to see Superman fight specific bad people as much as the special effects aspects. I have been enjoying Superman since I was a little boy in the early 1950’s. Since English was my second language, those comic books taught me to read and expanded my intellectual environment. The stories have come a long way since then. I aways wondered what happened to young Clark Kent as he was growing up. It was always capsulized and we never got the real picture. Smallville has come the closest. I enjoy the show tremendously and would like the next Superman Returns to be something like “Godfather 3.” That film goes back to the past and dissects what caused the characters behavior to develop. Superman Returns 2 should have the same scenario. Make a deal with CW and go back to Smallville( the one on TV, not the one in the Movie. That one was TOO FARMY for me.) Use some of those charactors. Durance makes the best Lois I have ever heard or seen. Do all this while fighting or dealing with a most serious danger. Go back and forth, until the climax. Thank you

  48. Wow, many of you should really get into showbiz and start writing scripts. You’d make a killing. I mean the ideas that are floating around this board ;)

    Mr Singer,

Many of us, as you know – are huge Superman fans, including yourself. You did a fine job with Superman Returns. It grows on you.
-Do not attempt to re-cast any of the actors – this will only set your sequel/prequel back at square one with your audience. Brandon fits the bill – I’m sure you’ve seen and felt the difficulties casting that role. All the others actors should NOT be recast either.
-Don’t listen to people about the love story – they don’t know that most of the world enjoys human emotion, and a good love connection works on a global market. Just tone it down a bit in the next one.
    – Incorporate more enemies.
    – figure a way for the audience to see Superman’s world – outside earth, briefly.
    – you have a little problem with his son. This might have been your only mistake that cannot be truly corrected – but it’s here and think of something clever so people can buy it this arch.
-Lastly, I hope you are not listening to some of these folks that say you can’t direct and to reboot. It must be incredibly hard to deliver a film of such magnitude with the world breathing down your neck. If anyone thinks this movie was a flop, you can laugh them all the way to the bank – http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/2006/SPRMN.php

  49. ok guys, all of you have valid points, but none of you have the right answer, here is the answer
    1) Fire Brian Singer
    2) Hire Christopher Nolan
    3) Hire Christopher Nolan. . . .
    4) Hire Christopher Nolan. . . .
. . . ok fine after all that
    5) Superman needs a new personality, get rid of his idiot self and make him more of the Smallville style, its not perfect but its better than him being a complete dumbass on screen.
    6) Give Superman a REAL threat, DOOMSDAY! NO WAY BETTER TO GET THE ATTENTION OF PEOPLE THAN TO HAVE AND EPIC FIGHT RIGHT AT THE START AND KILL SUPERMAN! THEN HAVE THE SEQUEL BE THE REMATCH!
    7) Make Superman Age maybe 18 years or so, make him a little older, so his son can be old enough to fight somewhere in the movie have his son show up and fight and die honorably blah blah blah only to have Superman summon up a fist of rage to kill Doomsday, AND himself.
    8) NO BLEEPIN LOVE STORY!
    9) NO BLEEPIN LOVE STORY!
    10) The End.

  50. I find it interesting that everyone says kill the little superboy, why not use him against superman? an evil son who isn’t weak 2 Kryptonite so he can kick his dads ass!, or at the least join forces with another supervillain, that’d tear superman apart, his cute little son gone evil

  51. Just to clarify, Bryan Singer didn’t direct X3, Brett Ratner did. Though its like a lot of other superhero movies they need to be watched more than once to appreciate them.

I feel that the main consideration of any new Superman film is to make the most of CGI available today. The minigun to the eye was fantastic! Superman Returns is the only movie that gives a true glimpse into the scope and magnitude of S’ power. Superman Returns was good, though I thought Kevin Spacey as Lex was piss weak – he over did it.

A CGI slug fest with a powerful villian (Doomsday, Zod, Darkseid, Bizzaro) showing levels of strength previously not seen, with massive collateral damage (see Hancock – it might be an average film but they got collateral damage aspect nailed). It does not always have to be emotional, the first thing that draws anyone to Superman is his abilities.

Follow this link its answers a lot of questions
    http://au.movies.ign.com/articles/902/902038p1.html

  52. Stumbling onto this discussion I had to comment. I seem to be of the minority of guys my age that liked Superman Returns. I liked that it had a nostalgic feel to it. I liked that there were elements of the 80 films in there. And I actually liked the emotion and drama in the film. Now for the sequal I would guess that singer incorporates a bit more action while hopefully retaining the emotional aspect of the last son of Krypton. And for all you folks who liked X-Men 3….. I thought this film totally sucked compared to X-1 and X-2. Give Bryan Singer a little bit of faith. He will do the next film justice.

  53. The way DC seem to lately ‘manage’ their movies – with the exception of Batman- would suggest a sequel may not get off the ground. Justice League will not be made because of constant disputes. Someone like James Cameron / Peter Jackson would be ideal – they could give grit and scope. Imagine Weta studios take on ‘Doomsday”.

Who are calling sad and lonely geeks Khalel (nice name choice – got your cape on at the moment?)

Superfan – you’re entitled to your opinion but I think box office receipts would suggest differently for X-Men 1 & 2.

  54. X-Men 1, Brian Singer did NOT do well. X-Men 2 I have never fallen asleep more times on a movie than I did this one, seriously I”ve tried watching it all the way through at least a dozen times. Singer is a lame director, and because of this he turned the hero that has dominated more imaginations than any other, Superman, into a Super-Pussycat. Brian Singer, you have turned what could have been some of the best super-hero films EVER into a droll series of dissappointments, Stay away from super-hero films!

  55. Superman Returns was pleasing but not too entertaining, it was more like a drama, rather than a action movie considering its basics coming from a Action Comics,

the costume was not perfect as the Red wasnt red anymore, neck opening was too small, if u read the comics or seen the animated movies, or the previous Superman 1, u wud kno the proportion was definetly missing, the way shoes looked were like boots made in paris, the ‘S’ Symbol was very Prominnet but somewhat small considering the wide chest like in the comics, and the belt was a bad one again y wud they shift the S symbol from the cape to the Belt, it was silly!

    the Story
hardly following up to the comics its rather still the Richard donner story maybe back in the 70’s or 80’s to make the movie in line with the comics the technology was under question but this was lil absurd approach, this story cud hv been a mixture of the same richard donner & the action comics part but they have wasted precious money, time & effort doing a sluggish one…

    Performance
Brandon Routh was perfect for the Role
Kate Bosworth was pretty & bland
Kevin spacey did wat singer told him to do
the rest of the cast nothing to remember about them..

    Cinematography
Sad one not a Bright enigmatic weather, kinda gave me the feeling that it was always rainy, not the sunshine Metropolis we see inthe comics…

i hope they reboot the frachise entirely, its high time people get to see the imagination that is gone in2 the present comics and the icon we worship called superman, its heartbreaking to come across movies so deviated from the actual storyline…..i hope the Warner brothers me out…!

  56. (Type your comment here. Make sure you’ve read the commenting rules before doing so)

Does anyone know if and when they are gonna make a sequel? I heard there were legal obstacles again.

  57. I cant believe what I’m reading . First of all Bryan Singer and Brandon Routh had their work cut of for them from the start. His directing style was true to the classic films yet comtemporary. Routh on the other hand had to walk in the footsteps of the late Chistopher Reeve and he did did one hell of a job and last of all kill the kid are you nuts that storyline is just too rich to abandon Richard White thats another story

  58. I just couldn’t get over why Lois never questioned how she could have had a child by Superman. Her memory was supposed to be wiped by the ‘kiss of forgetfulness’ at the end of Superman II.

  59. Yes part of Superman is his relationship with Lois Lane. But there have been times when he has put that on hold to be Superman the “Our Worlds ar War” saga comes to mind. Sorry but potential sequels shouldn’t be a chick flick he’s a superhero. Plus she’s with someone else (rightly or wrongly). The story has to move forward – maybe bring back ZOD – that was the best old film, but new is better -which would be best with Doomsday.

As for Ann’s comment about the Batman – part of him never holding down a relationship is his hardline committment to protecting Gotham – it will always come first.

  60. Okay, first of all…I am a 30 year old woman and I loved Superman Returns. I also loved the original movies with Christopher Reeve and I was delighted to see that they kept the storyline from those movies. For all of you people who say to lose Lois…are you kidding me??? Why do you think women are into Superman? We WANT the love interest there! I love the action too and there should be a lot of that, but hello, there has to be emotion and his longing to be normal and to be with Lois is a huge part of the Superman draw for me and I am sure for many other women. I do agree though that Kate Bosworth was way too young to pull off a feisty Lois. I was not impressed by her performance at all. They needed someone older and more assertive in that role. I also think Brandon Routh could be a bit better too. He needs to be more assertive as well and just needs some better acting skills. Hopefully with this second movie, he will be more confidant to pull it off better. I say keep the storyline nostalgic to the 80’s movies. That is what I love about it so much and many others do too! That is one thing I don’t like about Batman, he’s with a different woman almost every time, there’s no consistency there.

  61. Check out “DON” at the top. Anyway it comes down to want the film makers think is marketable Rodney. Its not a comic its a film adaptation.

However remember there’s probably only going to be two more movies in this franchise.

So kill Lex, bring on Doomsday at a time when the effects available would do it justice.

  62. Neomtb… we know singer wasn’t on the third movie.

They can have a movie without Lex. Plenty of rogues to go around.

Doomsday will not be in the movie. It’s just not in the cards.

  63. Important note: Bryan Singer didn’t direct the final X-men movie, which was a drop from the first two directed by singer.

Have him kill Lex or at least cripple him. Doomsday would be perfect – have Superman die at the end with a link to his resurrection in a following movie. A slug fest is needed.

  64. I thought the film was ok. The acting/directing for Lois was completely wrong though. A reboot would be a bad idea as it may mean re-doing the origin.
Darksied or Doomsday would be too much too soon. Yep, having Superman “die” to Doomsday would be pretty damn cool & the level of destruction in the film would shame everything else before it, but he’s only just back.
How about Mongol or Sinestro for the bad guy? (GL could get introduced to the general masses that way, as a tiny bit part)
Lobo & Brainiac were suggested earlier & could make for a good movie (not together though).

  65. completely agree with verisimilitude .. singer has to go .. i mean singer and the writers has managed what doomsday couldnt … they have fcking destroyed superman effortlessly … look what a super duper job nolan has done on the dark knight …. i mean the recent writers have fcked superman up .. showing him to be a lameass wimp … Superman TAS was a super crap .. supes battling giant robots and getting bitch slapped in every episode … JLA season 1 was a horror for supes .. same story .. supes getting his ass whipped every second …
FOR CHRISTS GET SOMEONE WHO HAS READ THE COMICS AND ACTUALLY LIKES SUPERMAN ….
as verisimilitude says read action 775 … that was one hell of a story …

  66. (Type your comment here. Make sure you’ve read the commenting rules before doing so)

Ok – I guess I’m in a minority on this site. I liked the kid. Bosworth did not thrill me and I don’t like that the script had her make such bonehead choices, like take her precious offspring on an investigative side trip (remember, she did not know Luthor was on that boat.). She was also too young and too skinny.

I liked the kid. I just would not build the script for SR2 around him, that’s all. Send him to boarding school, or something, for his “safety”, but I object to killing him off. That would be the WRONG thing to do at this point.

    .

  67. This movie has so many big stupid elements, it’s unforgivable:

    1) Bosworth – what IDIOT casted her? Why is that boring ass bitch Lois Lane?
    2) The kid – what were those idiot writers thinking? Please tell me I don’t have to see this stupid kid in all sequels. Kill him off in the next movie immediately.
    3) Superman as Peeping Tom – what the hell was THAT all about?? Com’on man, this is something Superman does?
    4) All the many stupid scenes throughout the movie (as many previous posters have point out).

  68. GET RID OF SINGER, GET RID OF BOSWORTH & GET NEW WRITERS WHO HAVE ACTUALLY READ CURRENT SUPERMAN BOOKS!

Singer cannot do action, I agree with the thousands of people who have said this. He is a fine director, no doubt, but an action packed movie he cannot do, nor does he have the creativity to do so..why?

The Airplane scene took far too long. He may be trying to show
the detail of how delicate it is for Superman to save a falling
airplane, but it took far too much film and effort from Superman.
    And…
Why the hell did Superman have to go to where the scientists say
    Krypton is? Can’t Superman…..
    A) USE HIS SUPER TELESCOPIC VISION (this is the superman
of the 80’s which is pre-crisis, as such he is extremely
    powerful)….or….
    B) USE THE ADVANCED ALIEN TECHNOLOGY IN HIS
FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE TO CONFIRM IT.
Superman didn’t have to leave earth. Singer could have used
some other reason….why have him leave to begin with?!?!
And why in the blue hell did Kalel crash his ship back to earth?
    A) by the time he got back into our solar system, his kryptonian
cells would have started absorbing Yellow sun energy and
he could have flown back to earth on his own power.
    B) why the hell was Kalel weak when he crashed? Again this is
a testament to the poor directing and writing in the movie.

These are just the tip of the planet-sized iceberg of problems
with Superman Returns….and don’t get me started about the kid.

THE KID SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN PART OF THE MOVIE/STORY.

There is a ray of light here, If we get rid of singer, bosworth and
the writers, then start over much like the Incredible Hulk did, this
will be a fine start. As for the story/plot of the movie, I have only
    one thing to say.

    ACTION COMICS #775.
If Warner Bros. can make a Superman Movie based on this self
contained story, I guaran~damn~tee, it will be one of, if not the
best super hero movies of all time.

  69. I’ve been wishing for Darkseid to kick Superman’s ass on the big screen for years. Why is this so difficult? Why is Superman such an easy character to fuck up?

  70. You can’t simply dismiss Lex or Lois. They will need to be in the film at length. But they will also need to be along for the ride as it were as Darkseid or something worse really takes it to the Last Son of Krypton.

  71. This sequel is going to rock! I want to see so much action I can’t sit still. I still want Lois Lane to be the love interest. I don’t know about the kid. Don’t give him a larger role. I don’t know. I just want the movie to happen. SR was awesome, and the sequel will be greater!

  72. Writing good stroyline for supes is always tough .. him being so awesome and all .. he needs a real challenge ..
though i am all for killing the child (real real bad move on singers part) and totally dispensing with lois lane … it would be better if theres a conflicting emotion such as supes given a choice between saving lois/kid and the whole humanity .. that would be awesome …
also it would be great if they show supes in all his glory .. dishing out some real heavy punches and getting really really pissed out …
it would really shut up the batman fans who rant on how bats would defeat supes … give them a taste of a angry supes … let them show that if faced with a angry supes .. bats would shit his pants …

  73. Just watched Superman Return yesterday.

What can i say? It’s utter rubbish.

The only saving grace is the aeroplane sequence. It tries too hard to be the 80’s version of the Superman…hello…this is 2008. Lex is way too cartoony like the Chris Reeve version.

Louis character sucks ( as a babe and an actress) and come’ on… A KID???!!! This is gotta be the killing point of the movie. If they want to bring on a kid, fine, do it in the last movie (expect a trilogy). but not now!!!

What can be done now is:
    1) Instead of killing the kid, reveal the kid is not Supes son, but the son of another alien shapeshiftter who bangs louis while he wasn’t around. And this alien shapeshifter is related to Kryton…

    2) Kill Louis. Yes, kill the bitch. I’m sick of Supe looking like some teenager having a crush on an older woman. It’s makes me puke.
Now Supe is free to go on a Rampage.

    3) Bring on Doomsday in the final movie….and the kid, being an alien and all, accelerate growths and become an adult by third movie, gangs up with Doomsday and fight supes to take revenge on Supe for killing his real father, (the alien shape shifter) in the 2nd movie.

  74. Hey RODNEY, just wanted to point out a little comment you made about the ‘de-powered superman and then boom, a kid. Not according to the directors cut of superman 2 which also disregards 3&4. In the directors cut, supes and lois have a romantic night BEFORE he loses his powers. If you or anyone can get to see the directors cut of superman 2 (and I don’t mean the rubbish one they sell as a dvd special because it still has loads of bits cut out), you’ll find it quite interesting.
Hey KELLY, your comment – “My biggest pet peeve with any superhero movie, is when the writers completely disregard the source material (comics) and just go crazy.” I couldn’t agree with you more.

  75. Kelly if you have been reading this site long everything you have said has already been said about this film. Lex and the real estate scam etc.

But to address some of your points. Xavier and Cyclops both died in the comic books a couple times (and came back) and currently Xavier is dead in the XMen comics. Just sayin.

Also, the Lois and Clark romance happened in Superman 2 (Superman Returns disregards 3&4) and while he was de-powered they shared a romantic night in the fortress of solitude. Boom. Kid.

And its Chris Reeve. Not Reeves. And if you were watching the movie you would know why he couldn’t just knock.

  76. I thought Superman returns was below average. The Airplane scene was great, but the rest was just bland. Uh Oh, it’s Lex Luthor. He’s doing a real estate scheme with Kryptonite…why does this sound so familiar?

My biggest pet peeve with any superhero movie, is when the writers completely disregard the source material (comics) and just go crazy. X3 was a perfect example. Cyclops and Xavier Die? Yea…

Superman Returns did that to me with the kid. When I realized it was Superman’s son, I actually felt my stomach turn. How many years worth of comics did it take for Superman and Lois to even start dating? Now, all of a sudden he has a son? An illigitimate son at that.

Okay, last thing. Did anyone else notice that they turned our favorite boyscout in to a complete and total STALKER! Serious! Think about it, Superman was hangin outside Lois’s house, in the bushes, X-raying through the walls and listening in on the conversation. I’m sorry, but the Superman I grew up reading and watching (God Bless You Chris Reeves) would never have invaded someones home like that. Then at the end, he sneaks in her house into the kids bedroom…Creepy! Dude, why didn’t you just knock.

Basically they just took a comic icon, and turned him into a creepy stalker with a kid and super powers. That was the story…oh yea, Lex and his Kryptonite (Blah, Blah).

  77. I do agree with the idea of killing his kid. Kids get in the way, and there is no way Superman can watch over him all the time and take care of him when he has the rest of the world to take care of.

Definitely bring a new villian! One that may kill or come pretty close to killing him. I want to see Superman get pissed!

I do agree with getting rid of the romance between Lois and Superman but her and Superman are very cute together so it may not be such a great idea. Besides Superman needs someone to love.

& all the X-men movies were awesome!

  78. I am not sure I agree with the comments about killing off Superman’s son. I am curious how a director would take that concept. I understand the idea of killing off the child and seeing what Superman would do, but like I said… I am curious how Hollywood would take the concept of a super child that is not weakened by Kryptonite.
I do agree with the comments about having a more formidable villian (or villians) for Superman.
clone_tk422 – I agree with you about seeing Clark changing into Superman. I think it would have been just as entertaining now as it had been when Christopher Reeve was playing Superman.

  79. look i know that it’s been a couple of months since this was posted. the date today is 6-28-08. now i know people probably won’t read this but i just had to speak my mind. 1 becuase i am a huge dc comics fan. now why not start a little fresh like batman begins, just scrap the entire 80’s movies, and start from the begining. make lex just like the animated series a tycoon who is always involved, but never get his hands dirty. also one big word, BRAINIAC. bring him into the movies becuase he after all he is one of supes biggest enemies. also more superman less clark kent. don’t get me wrong i like the idea, but it is superman, not smallville. so just a couple of ideas i just had to thow out there, i know it’s a little late, but u know what they say. for those of you who are a little slow, or full blown re re’s (it’s better late than never

  80. Kryptonite done. Kryptonian villians done. The cloning of superman is done. Superman vs a poxy, rocket firing Commodore 64 computer is done. Now we need something that pushes him to the point of almost certain death. Like someone said, with his pretty suit torn, ripped and bloodied. Bring in Doomsday. But bring a new dimension to him where he’s not just a muscle and fists brute but is also incredibly intelligent. I wish when these directors attempt to make these superhero films that they really take the time to do intense research and look up references, i.e. comics and animation. And not just watch it the once.

Bring in a superbad guy or an alien invasion that almost kills him…then bring out the Batman to tell Clark they need to form the Justice League!

  82. well, great to hear that superman is coming back, but the story is like abit off from the actual comic, about his death, his greatest fight against doomsday, oh… i really love to see that to put into movie!! superhero fight is really awesome.
Just like the HULK(edward norton) kick the ass out of the bad hulk. :)
I hope 2009 will be the year for superman’s…

  83. (Type your comment here. Make sure you’ve read the commenting rules before doing so)
Superman Returns is the best of all Superman movies.
Can’t wait for the next one.

  84. Lance, all the talk says there will be more action, bigger badguys and more action.

They are sticking with the same Superman, I just hope that if they stick with the same Lois that she plays her sharper and more sarcastic.

  85. Superman Returns was disappointing. It was a love story. Im a huge Superman fan and i was truely let down. The next movie HAS to have more action in it. And the actors HAVE to be replaced. The actors in Smallville fit the characters perfect. Get Tom Welling to play Clark Kent in the new movie! Or just someone that physically fits the role better this time. I hope Singer reads these blogs and others on the internet. I got my hopes up last time for Superman Returns, dont want to be let down again. Singer needs help on makin an action movie or he just does not need his hand in the movie. The writers and director of Iron Man need to make the new Superman movie!

  86. See Bowza, your problem is that you want your cake and eat it too.. You want Welling as superman. That means its a Smallville movie. They can’t make a Superman movie with Welling in it that wont tie it directly to Smallville. The Superman story told in Smallville is a deviation of the comic or the movie continuity.

Also, if you want a Smallville movie… it will have Smallville actors in it. They can’t recast the ones you dont like because then its not smallville.

  87. Personally, I think they should just forget about Superman Returns and redo the whole story, like they’ve done for the Hulk. Smallville, I think, has run its coarse, so why not end that series and let Tom Welling done the tights in a movie. Then again, one of my criticisms to Superman Returns (in addition to all the other posts; Singer’s ego got the best of him and it slapped him the face) is that even Superman seemed too young. Isn’t he supposed to be around 30 when he first hits the scene after his education in the Fortress of Solitude? I know Reeve was around the same age as Routhe,in the first Superman movie, but he presented more maturity. They would have to cast a new Lois too. The one in Smallville is annoying with no presence.

  88. As a fan of all things superman. The plus outwayed tha cons for me in Returns. Although i wanted more action i would have minded seeing further devolpment with Clark Kent. Smallville (in its first 5 seasons) found new depths in his charecter that i think would be a benefit to another silver screen attempt. The action sequences in Returns were absolutley fantastic, there just wasnt enough to keep the pace. I agree with what has been poreviously mentioned, get rid of the Kidd, stupid idea as this dictates the sequels and as an initial bad idea it will only spirral, possibly not kill him just strip his powers!!! and how come lois wasnt more surprised at the revelation of a superkid…um wasnt her mind wipped of the whole experience? in super 3?

All in all i cant wait for the sequel, Returns: not a bad effort…still alot of room for improvement!!!!!!

  89. I still cannot understand why so many people didn’t like superman returns. I loved it, but thats me. I was enjoying it so much that i felt as though i wanted more when it was over, and thats probably my only flaw with the movie. More supes and more Clark! I do agree that we needed more action, but at the same time the story line in superman returns was beautiful and touching. In the scene where superman was getting beat up by Lex’s goones i was completely emmersed in the scene and began to feel sorry for supes. When superman said goodbye to Lois and flew obove the clouds up to the sun to get his energy recharge, with that music playing, that whole scene was just beautiful and amazing, it gave me goose bumps.
What im trying to say is, all of that to me was fantastic, so with all of that and a combination of more action from supes would be awesome for a sequal.

  90. Just my 2 cents.. I always assumed with the way supes dumped the Kryptonian land mass into space built by Kryptonian TECHNOLOGY crystals that we could possibly see a return of the mass with a being born fron the “HINT” TECHNOLOGY crystals a Kryptonian TECHNOLOGICAL being… maybe with a name that sounds like i dont know crainiac ;-)… what if this being took over the body of i dunno a earthling who has the blood of a Kryptonian and maybe depending on his age accelerated his growth to become a true living flesh and blood being integrated with Kryptonian knowledge and TECHNOLOGY who is strong enough to make supes hurt… and what if Mr. Fly Boy cant bring himself to kill this new threat because of emotional ties so this this villan lives to threaten another day…but nevermind because good ol clark is the only one on earth with Kryptonian blood right? Not according to Lois… or I guess technically Singer. What a perfect way to bring supes to the bring of insanity I say… just my opinion tho

  91. (Type your comment here. Make sure you’ve read the commenting rules before doing so)

Agree with everyones comments above re the plot and casting weaknesses. However, why has no one picked up on the fact that the SFX in Superman Returns were absolutely pathetic! Take the scene where Supes rescues the plane/shuttle and the camera pans below the aircraft and you see Brandon Routh beneath holding the plan up. If you look closely (and you don’t even have to do that really!) you’ll see it just a GCI image of Routh/Superman, similar to how you had the GCI images of Keanu Reaves in the Matrix films. These GCI ‘people’ just do not look real! So, why is this important. Well, for the Superman movies, remember, the point of transforming the cartoon character into the feature film successfully was the famous tag line of the first movie: ‘You’ll believe a man can fly’. In the Donner film, the mixture of pioneering techniques, blue screen and the use of real actors made us believe Christopher Reeves could actually fly. Whilst in Singer’s shit film, we believed that a computer image of Brandon Routh could fly.

    Any comments??

  92. i like the storyline about the superkid i think it will be interesting watching superman teach someone else how to use their powers. I also want to see a more gutsy Lois like the one in the Smallville series.

  93. So I am a psychopath for wanting to remove the parts of the movie that no one likes, while validating a possible storyline that would TRULY explore a Superman story?

    I suggest you reconsider.

  94. Kill the kid ?? are you out of your mind ?? and get over lois ??

    what’s wrong with you man??……. i have a suggestion…

you better consult a psychiatrist , you psychopath………..

  95. Great!!! Can’t wait to see it. Yes it is true, doing everything different will make the film better. Sure kill the kid, give him a super powered villian, but the thing is, I would like too see some of the orignal superman. Changing the character is great and all, but some things you just have to leave alone to make a great movie. I mean years back when they did the remake to godzilla, yeah it was a good movie but the mood of the film yelled out Jurassic Park (which for me kinda kills the whole godzilla thing). Changing the storyline – “Great” but the character you just have to leave the superman we all have grown to love.

  96. Fuck Smallville. If he had made the movie ANYTHING like that show it would have been ten times worse than it was. All in all, the refrences to the late 70’s Chris Reeves Superman movies were what saved the flick. To those in the “know” Superman 2 is the basic standard for all superhero movies. “But was it as good as Sueprman 2?” is what they ask. Not “uh, I totally dig smallville better man.” Smallville is sensitive WB type garbage with cookie cutter pretty boys and girls that only exist in hollywood. Its pretty craptastic. The Superman Returns sequel should have a pissed off superman and some high powered villians… Doomsday, Bizarro or something…

  97. The movie was just so-so, but i don’t know why, maybe because I’m a huge fan of the SuperScout or maybe they kept playing the John Williams score, I thought they pretty much captured the spirit of our favorite Superhero. No, seriously, I was totally floored when they used the original score in the opening credits, being a younger fan I never got to experience the earlier movies on the big screen. I guess Singer didn’t do much of a job where action was concerned, except for the plane-crash sequence, I wasn’t much of a fan of the action in the first two X-Men movies, and no offense meant, he converted Superman into chick-flick material!!! I completely agree with Julio, Luthor’s old hat, and if we still have to see him again, give us the newer version of Lex, the head honcho of Luthor Corp. and the dark multi layered character and the only villian in the Super-Universe who can beat Superman and still get away with it….come on, you guys did it with Smallville, why not in a movie? As for the action part, one,no, two words- Darkseid. And Darkseid. Come on, if it’s Doomsday, it’s gonna be action and no storyline, just smashing and punches and nothing else. We all liked Zod in 2 cuz there was a story attached to the action. Think Darkseid, think a superpowered villian that can think like Lex and has all the glory of Zod and Doomsday combined.
And please, please, please get rid of Bosworth and her funny forehead, we want a decent Lois, and I AM surprised that noone here even mentioned TERI HATCHER!!!
Point is, get rid of Singer, Bosworth, AND the kid. He has no story, even if he does, it’s gonna be one sloppy mess that fans won’t forget in a long long time. And never think of casting Tom Welling, can’t risk the show going off air!!!

  98. I guess I must be in the minority because I loved this movie, saw in the theater 3 times (twice in 3-D) and can’t wait until the next one. I do agree 100% that Kate Bosworth was the worst thing about the movie. Not only was she all wrong for the part of Lois Lane (too young) but the whole anorexic look that she had going kept distracting me from the movie. Every time the did a full body shot of her, I kept thinking that she could really use a cheeseburger or just any type of food. I agree that they need to get rid of the kid some how, maybe Darkseid could kill the kid and they could have a knock down, drag out fight like the one at the end of the Justice League Unlimited series, where Supe beats the hell out of Darkseid (btw, best cartoon fight scene of all time). We all know they won’t kill the kid, too many people would freak out if they killed a kid in a blockbuster action movie. Just an idea, but really to save the next movie either force feed Kate Bosworth some food so that she can be watchable or get a new Lois Lane. Anyway, loved the movie, eagerly awaiting the next one.

  99. Green, I am as much of a purist as anyone. But keep in mind that there are MANY more characters in the Superman comics than just Lois and Lex.

And the comics didn’t have superkid either.

There is no “script” until they write one. The comics are not the script, they are simply the source material.

According to your theory, if they were to stay true to the comics, none of the Superman movies would have happened. He uses powers Superman doesnt have, fights villians that were never in the Superman comics, and has adventures never found in the pages of the comics.

  100. Lets stick to the comics, remember that is where the stories come from. stop trying to put lois and elx out of the picture they are in the comics. keep to the script. stop trying to change what is already there.

if you want more action and superbad villains, create your own superhero. superman is done. if you are to make a sequal, stick to the script.

  101. Bring on Doomsday! This would be a positive direction for the Superman franchise to show action, death, and mortal decisions for the man of steel. Have the city wrecked up a bit… bring the mood into a sombre, black, and depressing state. It will help move the story along towards a 3rd installment of Superman.

Take a good look at the animated version… see what that brought us in terms of a storyline, that can certainly be used as a blueprint for this kind of character study – an immortal dealing with death – to save the world. How awesome would that be!?

Don’t do a soap-opera… don’t do Lex again… don’t do the love story without loss of some type.

Do it right… or don’t do it at all.

  102. After all these years and so many failed attemptes. . .when all the planets aligned, and a new Superman movie actually started filming. . .I hand never been more excited to see a film in my life. This I found strange because I could not believe I was more excited for a new Superman movie, than I was for the Star Wars Ep1 when that began filmin). I’ve always been a huge Star Wars fan. . .and I’ve always just liked superman.

When I went to see those two movies. . .neither of them lived up to my expectations. I wondered if that is because I’ve been waiting for so long. . .and had built up so many stories / ideas in my head of what I wanted to see. . .that it would be impossible for a director to make me happy.

Now, after a while has passed. . .I can safely say the following. Star Wars Ep1 was not a good movie. There are too many things to list that was wrong with that movie. To prove my point. . .since Ep2 came out. . .I have never watched ep1 again.

I cannot say the same for Superman Returns. The more and more I watch that movie. . .the more I love it. It took me a while to dump my pre-conceived notions about what I thought it should have been. . .and began to enjoy the movie for what it was. . .as re-introduction and a strong foundation for future greatness. There are many great scenes in Superman Returns. . .and I contine to watch that movie. . .eager for more.

As a counter point. I drug my wife to see Superman Returns when it was released. . .and she did not think it was very good either. However, she’s watched it a few times after and now really likes it. She even cries when sups get the crap kicked out of him by lex’s henchmen. Superman Returns seems to be one of those movies you have to see a few times to really appreciate it. . .I don’t know why.

Having said that. I completely agree that Kate Bosworth is completely wrong for Louis Lane. Terrible on all levels. The kid should probably die in a sequel, and Kevins Spacys version of Lex was better than Gene Hackmans from the 1970’s. Sorry everyone. I love Gene Hackman in Superman 1 and 2 (although I liked Richard Donners version of 2 MUCH BETTER. . .you have haven’t seen the Richard Donner cut. . .you MUST), but Gene’s lex surounded himself with complete idiots. . .and the campiness is too much. I honestly believe that Michal Rosenbaumb’s lex (from smallville) is the best lex portrail of all time. Smart, cunning, guiltless.

I though Brandon Routh did a great job in returns. . .and he should stay on for future movies. Personaly, I was one of those guys that really wanted to see Tom Welling in the movie. I think he was born to play clark kent / superman. I can’t see him doing anything else (kinda like mark hamel). However, after seeing Routh. . .I was sold.

Speaking of Smallville. Smallville really is a great idea, and I love (almost) all the new spins they put on the charaters. Purests will hate smallville, because of the way they bastardize the origional ideas and story lines. But if you divorce yourself from the 70+ year old song and dance, the creators have putt a really nice and refreshing modern spin on the small screen. . .without destroying mythos. Yes there are some “filler” episodes that are terrible. . .but the “plot moving” episodes are almost always great.

Lastly. . .did anyone (besides me) spend the time or money to read the Superman Returns novel? I read it before the release and LOVED it. Then I saw the movie and was very dissapointed because SOOO much had been cut out of the film. Stuff that I had heard was filmed but dumped in editing (some shots showed up in previews). (scenes like Cark actually at krypton). Just wondering if anyone had the same opinions.

Lastly. . .I hope my preconceived notions do not ruin the new Indiana Jones movie. :)

  103. i LOVED superman returns I agree it wasn’t what i was expecting, but i gave it 2 thumbs up. i’m not an action movie person so i was glad that there wasn’t too much of that. i think it was able to appeal to more then one taste -there was the action, the romance and the mystery of the kid- i don’t really think they should kill the kid, for now at least. it could give some interesting story lines.
as for the character choices. i think Tom Welling would have been a good choice, but since he already plays superman on smallville, it would have seemed like superman returns was part of smallville. Kevin Spacey was great as lex but Kate Bosworth as lois… not so much. she was just ok, not my favorite.
i can’t wait to see what the sequal will be :-)

  104. I was not very happy when I first found out Tom Welling wasn’t even considered for the part for Superman Returns. Brandon Routh ended up doing a decent job, but for continuity reasons, I was hoping the part would go to Tom Welling because I’ve followed Smallville since day 1. I do wish Singer would have made Lex much darker like Michael Rosenbaum’s character because the character of Lex has come so much further than being the con artist comedic type. With that being said, I still enjoyed Superman Returns because Superman has always been my favorite comic character and it truly is hard to screw it up. Well, the morons who made Superman IV had to work very hard at screwing it up because they did a bang up job of screwing the pooch. Doomsday would be a good baddy to see, or Bizarro. Zod has already been done, Singer needs to do someone else first before bringing Zod back to the picture. Kate Bosworth being picked for Lois Lane I think wasn’t the best idea either. Not only was she really not fit for the part, the way her character was written made it that much worse. Erica Durance plays an AWESOME Lois Lane in Smallville. I think Kevin Spacey did a good job as Lex. And while on the subject, has anyone else seen the stupid crap that is to become the Justice League movie? Brandon Routh won’t be Superman, Christian Bale won’t be Batman…it just won’t line up with the current movies.

  105. (Stop Whining). Sorry I disagree with anyone who says Singer did not do a fine job on Superman Returns It was a risky adventure stepping up in Reeves shoes to begin with, however the first 2 superman movies with what special effects they had in those days were great however the 2nd pair of the 4 were lousy and sadly created not Reeves fault but for someone who grew up on the comics cartoons and movies and tv series I really enjoyed this movie because for the first time our generation got to see Superman look like he really could fly and the story was a good kick off to build up to more better movies, this generation really is spoiled when it comes to hero movies look what your fathers and grandfathers had to watch now they can bring the comic books to life with all the tech so just enjoy the movie for what it is, a movie a fantasy and keep real.

  106. Okay, I guess I misinterpreted your point on the idea of killing the kid off . I wasn’t talking about Superman doing it either, I meant anyone, hero or villian. I was trying to make the point that from what I’ve seen in forums, message boards etc.( and I don’t claim to be an expert on these things) that alot of fans of comic book heroes today seem to prefer darker personalities and I would hope that Superman doesn’t go down that road. I was a bit harsh in my comments and I appologize for that. I just want a superhero movie that I can go to with my son and not have to worry about explaining why superkid died, thats all. X3 was a perfect example when the killed off half the XMen. It sucked. And as for a truly detested villian, I’m all for that, I can’t wait for Dark Knight to see Ledgers portrayal of the Joker.

  107. Wow Clark. Totally missed the point.

I never said that SUPERMAN should kill the kid. And a character does not have to be dark psychotic evil guy. I like that Superman is morally just and clean. I wouldn’t have the character portrayed any other way.

The point of killing the kid is twofold. Not only does it remove a completely unnecessary plot device, but it challenges Superman’s morals.

How close to the line will he get before rising above his base instincts for revenge or violence. It has always been the dichotomy of the character that he is completely capable of taking over the planet unopposed and still chooses to help those in need.

Your morals are only as good as they are when they are tested. Batman attempts to save even worthless criminals from falling to their death. Same as Superman. He wont let someone die to serve justice. It would just be interesting to see Superman get tested.

As for your assumption that superkid is disliked by a small minority of fans, I suggest you surf comic book forums, other sites like this, and movie reviewers. The minority likes the kid.

And I do not understand how a criminal committing a vile act would steer you away from the movie. To use your own phrasing “why the fuck do people always want” a villain that is only vaguely immoral? What’s wrong with a truly detested badguy?

  108. (Type your comment here. Make sure you’ve read the commenting rules before doing so)
    1. Get rid of superkid. No really. Kill the kid. Make this the driving force that tempts Superman’s morals. What happens when you piss off the most powerful superhero ever? Will he kill out of rage? Vengence?

Yeah, killing kids is what Superman is all about. The real problem with superhero movies is adults think they should be made for them, not kids. Superman isn’t Wolverine,The Punisher or Batman. Why the fuck do you people always want some psychotic, dark, evil guy to be your heroes? Maybe if you took one step out of your mom’s basement for 5 seconds, you’d see that world isn’t such a bad place and kids still love REAL good guys. Any comic movie that would even consider killing off a child just because fans( just a small, loud segment by the way) don’t like it, should be ashamed of itself. This is just as pathetic as all the nitpicking about how dark his suit was in the last movie.

  109. I don’t understand why you guys are all down hard on Singer. I loved Superman Returns. Sure, there were some points that were slow, and more than a few times I said, “What in the world were they thinking”. But I have to say I loved the movie. And after watching it a few times, I came to appreciate the moments where I said, “What in the world…” What Singer did, he did good. The scenes that WERE action in superman returns were great–the airplane, earthquake, etc. The scene where Superman was being beat up was especially compelling, and it really conveyed the hopelessness of his situation. I admit, it needed MORE action, but what it did–it did good. Besides, I hate going to movies where I shell out 10 bucks and it is all over in an hour and a half. All that said, Lois Lane was horrible, and they definitely need a new actress to play her! Oh, and one thing I was really disappointed was the lack of some good “slow motion” shots. This is one thing I absolutely love about Smallville. The whole “world frozen, but superman at normal speed” is just an amazing way to convey his speed and power. I can only pray that this is taken advantage of next time! Sorry bout the long post…

  110. Superman Returns was such a horrible movie. I was a child of the 80s and loved to older movies, but a Superman movie needs to have better actors, writers and a director who understands how to do a male driven action movie. Routh barely spoke in the movie and the lady who portrayed Lane was all wrong for the part. Also, whats up with supes having a kid…hell if they were going to give him a kid it should be in a trilogy and the kid only makes an appearance at the end. Also, the lex from smallville is a better lex for today than spacey. Routh and Singer and majority of the cast should not do this movie, because it will take years to get a proper superman movie.

  111. Rodney, I agree with your post and I will not question your 30 years of Superman history. Personally I just wanted to bring a few things to light that some of us, or those not familiar with Superman might have forgotten.

About fighting Darkseid, it’s only because I would like to see Superman fight a bad guy that can take a beating, and yet be meaningful storywise unlike Doomsday. With Darkseid it’s not about Superman fighting someone who can challenge him physically, but someone who can also challenge him psychologically and not turn out to be a bunch of senseless violence because I know Superman is not about that. Darkseid would still make a great villain on film, wanting Superman as his knight to fullfill his ambitions. But I know that what a fan wants, it’s not what the heads of Hollywood would perceive as a great money maker. They’re still stuck with the tried and true superhero storylines.

Anyways, Superman and Luthor will forever be nemesis and “Brains vs Brawn” will describe their conflicts till the end of time. But Luthor needed to be refreshed in the movies. Personally, my favorite Luthor version was the Machiavellian industrialist of the 80s. I thought it would’ve been a great twist and pose many challenges for Superman in Returns. I actually thought that when Luthor swindle the old lady from her money, that was the version everyone was going to see, but oh well.

    Peace.

  112. Well Julio while you are busy setting the record straight, I have always said that Superman needs a villian like Luthor. His moral compass won’t allow him to murder Luthor and he isnt superpowered. Brains vs Brawn. Supes cannot be hurt, so giving him a nasty badguy is not going to help.

That being said, we still like to see Supes open up a can. His speech to Darkseid in Legacy sums that up exactly. While he was learning how not to crush glasses in his hands and being SO careful all his life he really felt good letting go and giving Darkseid his all.

Superman is about Superman, not Clark Kent. People get it wrong when they assume that Superman is Clark’s secret identity while it is the other way around. He pretends to be human, and he pretends to fit in to normal society. He craves to. That is the personality.

Lois (and the bastard son storyline) was the only part I didnt like about Returns. I strongly think that Lois and Clark have a place in the Superman movies, I just dont think it should ONLY be that.

The record doesn’t need to be set straight. I understand Superman better than most as I have been reading his comics for almost 30 years.

  113. Okay. After reading all the posters on this site, I have to admit you guys know nothing about Superman, or Doomsday, or any of his baddies. Okay, I will agree that Kate didn’t or couldn’t do an independant woman like Louis Lane. I mean, some of you are right. How hard is it to write an independent woman? I think the best man that did that was James Cameron with Sarah Connor in both Terminators, Sigourny Weaver in Aliens, and many other females in his films that didn’t cry or held back from kicking a guy in the nuts, which is what the real Louis would do.
Getting back to Superman Returns. I liked the film. You can hate me if you like, but Singer brought something to the light that we all have ignored or forgotten since Supes has been around for like 70+ years! The man’s all alone! There’s no one like him on earth! But that’s because TV and other media have ignored the fact that Superman has been married to Louis in the comics for like 16 years now!! So he’s not alone anymore. You all know this, right?? So let’s cut the bullshit and update all these movies and include something new and fresh. In Returns, I didn’t like the kid idea, but if Supes and Louis got married in the sequel, then it’s fine.
Doomsday in the sequel? Give me a break!! Shoot me perhaps!!! How many times do you guys want to see Supes die and come back? Doomsday is a 1 dimensional character that his only job was to KILL Superman. Let’s leave it at that. Luthor? I hate the way Luthor was protrayed in Returns. The Lex Luthor I like was the businessman Luthor because this character built his wealth by selling death, and Superman was always there to stop him.
Now, more action in the sequel? I have one battle for you that I would like to see in a big budget Hollywood movie. Any of you have seen the late 90s Superman The Animated Series? The one battle that I’ve always wanted to see in live film was Superman versus Darkseid! I’ve never seen Superman take a beating from a demigod and loose at the same time he triumphed when he defeated him (look it up in youtube. The episode it’s called Legacy). Now that would be the sequel Singer should make. The defender of truth and justice versus a demigod dictator that vows to no one and wants everyone to submit to his evil will. That’s a villain that Superman should be pitted against. It could even be a trilogy – Superman and The New Gods.
Sorry for the long post, but somebody had to set the record straight, whether you like it or not.
    Peace.

Enjoyed the returns movie with the more realistic flying sequences, but Clark needs to be more characteristic instead of an imitation of Chris Reeve’s portrayal allowing Mr. Routh to develop into his own persona. The costume is impressive, but I feel that the “larger S and an S on the cape with the halter-neck is a more manly and traditional design, but keep the S belt buckle and 3D effect look, if you adopted a combination of this old and new design I am sure supes would show even greater screen presence.

  115. (Type your comment here. Make sure you’ve read the commenting rules before doing so)the movie was good, wasn’t great. the director is perfect, the action not enough. the actors are good, not great, but not needed. THE HAS TO BE A SUPER VILLIAN. that was the problem with ang lee’s hulk. screw the army! leave the kid alone, less lois, and show something of a menace for him with his powers, DOOMSDAY IS THE WAY TO GO!

  116. Itll also be nice to see superman take off diagonally instead of everytime he flies its straight up and down, left and right, i kept seein him on a string (imaginable one) . Also he looked really cartoonish alot of times, sometimes new technology doesnt mean better.

  117. Gary, this is the thing that makes Superman so great. He is the most powerful physical being on the planet with all these amazing abilities and a simple meteor rock can make him as fragile as a baby.

Seeing Supes open up a can of whoopass would be cool, but you don’t have to take away his weakness to do that.

Supers has to hold back his powers to maintain his “humanity”. He has to learn to drink from a glass without shattering it. His greatest powers are the very things that make it HARD for him to be human (which he feels he is despite his genetic origins)

  118. Get rid of Supermans weakness. Everybody finds Kryptonite. Let him fight proper Supervillians. A proper fight with Doomsday.Let him loose with all his Superpowers, not just occassionally.

  119. Jason, I don’t want to sound anti American here, but the “American Way” wasn’t left out as much as it was not directly observed.

Superman doesn’ t have to be American just to honour your gung ho spirit, but also keep in mind that your sheltered view of the “good” that the US is doing is shared only by Americans. This is a movie they hoped to show in other countries other than your own that could care less about attaching this character to your flag.

The movie took place in the US, and that is good enough. Superman isn’t about being an American. He is about being a hero.

Also, keep in mind that Joe Shuster, co-creator of Superman was a Canadian.

  120. Quick update here as well, these are American Icons they are using to broadcast to the world, how about send a positive message about us and the amazing things we can create.

  121. Here’s a start to making Superman a box office smash in the states. MAKE THE MOVIE PRO AMERICA for a change.

It was a huge let down for them to remove the “american way” from the list of superman attributes. We still are the driving force in the world for freedom, economic growth, and the betterment of millions of peoples lives.

No country has freed more people than we have, no country has ever spent more money trying to make the world a more free and better place.

You want super status and super profits, dont bash your home country. You dont even have to say it literally, look at what transformers did and they only put in hints about the greatness and the stand up nature of our military personnel.

  122. (Type your comment here. Make sure you’ve read the commenting rules before doing so)I loved superman returns, i also agree 100% with what RODNEY said. I want to see supes punch something, get angry, get really challenged, and at the same time have all the emotions like the first, becuase that was fantastic.

I loved all the characters is Superman returns.
Using Jor-El’s voice was very powerful, i was moved actually. Nice touch.
So, keep the emotion, and lets get some awesome superman action all before the credits like what RODNEY said, haha i liked that, thats what i want too.

    Andy

  123. They should have John Williams score the ENTIRE Film. John Ottman didn’t write good enough music on Superman Returns. The only time the music connected with the movie were the opening credits, and when they they used John Williams’ theme.
    OH, and more action please!

  124. Here’s how the movie needs to be….Lex kills Supe’s son, Superman finds it terribly difficult to deal with it while being there for Lois. That’s the drama part, meanwhile a giant asteroid is one it’s way to Earth and fragments of it begin to hit the Earth and create all kinds of weather changes that Sup has to come to the rescue for and do his best action and really show his strengths. Finally , Sup decides to that the only way to stop the Planet Killer Asteroid is to destroy by flying straight into it with all his might, even if it costs him his life. With the most powerful Superman soundtrack music playing to his greatness!!! Now, that would be insane , awesome!!!!

  125. come on where is batman in all this. – bring the black knight in and yes yes yes – doomsday is the trick. Follow the doomsday “death of superman” That is just an excellent series

  126. What is going to happen to supermans son in the sequel is he going to die and will superman find out who killed his son and if jason doesn’t die will he ever fly by his side in the sequel.

  127. @Kristina

I hear you! I’m so tired of all these crying, whining women! How hard is it to write an independent woman? Drives me up the wall and has me sounding a lot more feminist than I like.

  128. @Meli

Thanks. I’m not a feminazi, but when it comes to women in film and how weakly they are portrayed 99.9% of the time, I’m about ready to shave my head and burn my bra. The shit is ridiculous. I’ve never been kidnapped. I don’t stupidly wander into the bad guy’s lair with my fucking bastard child in tow. I don’t lie to a decent guy about who my baby daddy is. I’m aces when it comes to writing reports for school. Shit, I’m more Lois Lane than fucking Bosworth.

  129. Thats actually one of the first thoughts I had after seeing Returns. I loved that they put the kid in there and I thought the final scene where Superman repeats to Jason what Jor-El had said to him was one of the more powerful scenes in any movie that year, definately my favorite.

All that being said, I felt the best way to go moving forward would be to use the chilkd against Superman. There really is no place for him in the story and no one wants to see Superboy and to ignore him altogether would be bad.

The best route to go would be to kill him. It would be an amazing driving force for a character like Superman. It would asmazing to explore how a hero like Superman would deal with the loss. Hes not Batman and hes not a vengeful character, so what does he do?

  130. LOL @ Kristina – you took the thoughts right out of my head.

I’m all for axing the kid and by the time they get around to making and releasing this movie he won’t be as little, so it won’t be like killing a puppy.

  131. Singer is a good director. But like many good directors, mistake decisions are going to be made. The problem with Superman Returns, was that there was simply too much focus on drama and the relationship between Clark and Lois, aswell as the fact that there wasn’t a super powered baddy giving big blue some trouble.

However, from what Singer said, he’s realized that for this next film he’s going to have to up the ante. That’s a good thing.

  132. I actually enjoyed the new Superman movie. It wasn’t as good as the original first two (which was made as one movie, I believe), but I definitely thought it was a well-made homage.

I totally agree with your points — and for #2, like another poster wrote, I think they should go totally crazy and have Doomsday as the new super-villain. I trust Singer enough to pull off a good sequel… I don’t trust him to stay with it, however — I hope he doesn’t ditch this movie the way he ditched on X3.

  133. Of Supey Returns, I always thought it had the right cast, just a bit off in the right casting. In other words, if I was the casting director, I would have tried like the dickens to convince Singer…to have Parker Posey switch roles with Kate Bosworth. If you went to all that trouble to cast Routh as Kent/Supey because he “looks” like Chris Reeve, then why not cast an actress who more resembles Lois Lane?

Don’t get me wrong. I think Kate is a good actress. I also think they (the casting directors) should have kept looking.

As for the Kid, I don’t want to kill him off. Why? Simple. Pick one possibility:

    * We find out the kid is really the Son Of Zod as Zod raped Lois without her knowing and the kid is an evil seed;

    * We find out Supey is actually on a false Earth thanks to Mr. Mytzlplk;

  134. I dont mind that they brought in new writers, even though I would have liked the whole team to get another shot at the sequel.

I am worried however, with Orci and Kurtzman being tabbed for this. I loved Transformers, but the strength of that movie was NOT the script.

I hope Singer doesnt leave this project. At least he will bring some continuity and hopefully still has some creative control over major plot points.

I think Singer is smart enough to give the fans what they want this time around, so bring it on.

  135. I think it was the nostalgia of Returns that either turned people away from it or made people really appreciate it. I was a huge fan of the 80’s film and was not dissapointed with the sequel like approach to the previous 3 films. Let us not think about 4. With nods to the other films we had characters fleshed out and also we did not have to see a complete rehash of the characters like what they have done with that poor excuse for a show Smallville. come on people laptops and mustangs in smallville hahahahahahaha. Small town yeah right.
I do not mind who directs the next movie but let us hope we have Roth back, a decent villian (s), less Lois, no super kid and more action. Singers action is a bit boring but the few scenes there are I do rewind time again as I love the imagery. The airplane scene and supes falling from the sky are beautiful to watch reminds me of Alex Ross artwork.

  136. How many times do we hear this news?? this is like the fifth time over the past three years that there has been a story along the lines of

“Singers on board and he promises heaps more action!!!!”

there will be a reboot but I really doubt we are going to see a singer/routh superman sequel.

  137. I despised Superman Returns and the news of Singer returning means a continuation of that shitty, shitty movie. I have zero interest with him attached. ZERO.

And X-3 did have way better action.

  138. I wouldn’t mind Zod, but I am starting to think the sequel needs a fresh new bad guy (like Doomsday) to make an impact (like killing the kid) before having Zod aim for extreme payback.

  139. Lois wouldn’t be a problem if they cast someone who could portray a woman(WOMAN, not girl) worth taking a Kryptonite shank to the kidney for. I have YET to see a comic book movie that had a love interest that was worth the trouble the guy goes through to keep her. Lois Lane is supposed to be a ballsy, gutsy broad, not a whiny teenage girl who flails her hands about like she’s having a hissy. I laughed at the wardrobe in the film, putting Bosworth in all these dull brown colors to make her look older. Why don’t you CAST SOMEONE OLDER who can actually convey more than one emotion(dumbstruck) on her fucking face?! If they made Lois into the badass that she is supposed to be, you wouldn’t hear anyone whining about Lois getting in the way. Fuck, I wish I could clone Lena Headey and put her in every fucking movie that requires a woman to do more than stand there and be helpless.

  140. to clone_tk422’s point…
They should, for the first time ever show him changing into supes in his own speed, so the rest of the world is frozen or in extreme slow mo, they way they sometimes do on smallville. show the buttons rip and fly off, the glasses come off, maybe even explain what he does with his clothes when in a phone booth.

  141. koko says… “Singer did a sick as fuck job with the AAeroplane sequence at the start of Returns, if only he had’ve kept up that sort of pace. Singer CAN do action.”

    Agreed, well said.

one thing that pissed me off nostaligia wise is, not enough of seeing Clark transform into Supes. I may be off here but to me a bit highlight of the 80’s movies was seeing how he quick changed from Clark to Superman.. you had different ways of doing it every time, the revolving door, falling out a window, in the alley, behind the hot dog stand etc.. I absolutely love these moments in the Chris Reeves movies and we need more of them in current version.

I really got annoyed at the start of the movie, hes running down the street and pulls open his shirt to reveal the S and I thought here we go.. I was so pissed when they didnt show the costume change at this point and see him takeoff as the next scene you just see him in the air.

The only costume change we got to see was in the elevator and this was so-so. I’m sorry but that first change in the street should have shown the whole thing.. Him Changing and then taking off

  142. X2 > X3
(that means X2 is greater in every way)

    SINGER : YES WE CAN!
superman returns had some pretty emotional scenes for me, him returning and entering the plane, made me feel the same way the distraught passengers did. I had to catch my breath, it was unreal. but then yes…. he need to show off his powers more, and not just blow his load in that montage scene with the superbreath and heat/laser vision.

Kill the kid, sure why not, that would be interesting. and maybe forget a love interest in the next one. I always felt supermans Villians (aside from lex) were always pretty weak, compared to batmans and spidermans. those villians really stood OUT. And there were so many in the comics. If it were up to me, Id create a new threat for superman to fight. someone new, dont do doomsday, save that for later.

    1. Kate Bosworth’s Lois Lane lacked the qualities that made Superman love her in the first place. She is not fesity, and seems to have rather a bland personality. Jason is a cute kid, but it never explains how he came to be. Was it the scene in S2? Is Lois such a slut that she moved from Superman to Richard so quickly she didn’t know who was the father? does Richard know he is not Jason’s biological father? What the hell is up with that?! And Clark. Clark is the reason I like Superman. The whole “secret identity” device is what creates the tension, makes it interesting. There was barely any Clark-Lois interaction in the film, and no apparent reason for Clark to ever reveal his secret identity, apart from Jason. Did Jason actually throw the piano, or was it the ship lurching? We also see the bare minimum of Superman’s abilities. Sure, he flies a lot and lifts a continent into orbit, but his other abilities are downplayed. He uses his XRAY vision only once, along with his heat vision and super-breath. All in all, there is very little to drive the film without that Clark-Lois tension. They needed much more superhero action, and much more Clark-Lois action. Clark was in like, three scenes, then he’s gone for the rest of the film. Does no-one notice that he mysteriously disappears for a few days?
Sorry, I just think there are a few issues with the film that need to be resolved.

  143. Singer did a sick as fuck job with the AAeroplane sequence at the start of Returns, if only he had’ve kept up that sort of pace. Singer CAN do action.

  144. I should point out that while Superman Returns was certainly not the type of Superman movie I was expecting, I didn’t hate it the way many people did. The tone of the movie was surprising but I feel that if a few of the other flaws were remedied, the subtle, emotional tone could have made it a very unique superhero film. Unfortunately, the flaws that I just mentioned dragged the whole movie down for me. Those flaws being; super boy, Lois the pill, and every link to the 80s movies. That last one is the real problem to me. Many people (those too young to remember the 80s movies and those that remember but didn’t like them) hate the portrayals of Lex as a lousy con artist and the goofy comedic bits. Those portrayals are completely at odds with the comics for the last 20 years as well as the success of the themes introduced in the Smallville series. Now I should add that Smallville is far from perfect but it added layers to Clark Kent’s personality that, at long last, made him a compelling character. In Superman Returns he was the same old cardboard cut out Superman or the comically clumsy Clark Kent. What a shame. I really don’t want to see that happen again. I think Singer is far too in love with the 80s movies to realize that many people hated the last movie because of that.

Whoa, sorry for such a long post. I guess I just had a rant.

  145. Rodney I am sorry to say this but truth is Singer cannot do action. He simply cannot. He has a very boring and bland action style. That does not mean he isn’t a good director. He is simply not fit for comic book flicks.

X3 was a drop down in quality but you have to admit that thh action scenes were much better and cooler than X1+X2.

    1. I don’t know who you are but you are right on target brother. Singer’s movies are boring when it comes to action. I liked the Usual Suspects…but that was it!
