Movies I’m Not Holding My Breath For

There is something that annoys all of the online film community, and that are films that are stuck in “developmental hell.” How many times have you read news about movies that you were excited to see years ago, and talked about to your friends, and still have yet to see them hit the big screen today?  (Frustrating, ain’t it?)  However, sometimes movies are well worth the wait. In fact when we follow the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ mentality, that’s when we actually get what we want.  It took years for ‘Spider-man,’ ‘Super man Returns’ and ‘Sweeney Todd’ to hit the big screen. Also, just when we almost gave up hope, ‘Indiana Jones 4,’ ‘Sex and the City movie,’ and ‘X-files 2’ finally got out of development hell and fan boys and girls were able to rejoice.

So here are movies that I’m not holding my breath for, and hopefully they will get made one day. (However, some of them I gave up all hope for!)

1. MEG-How many of guys were waiting eagerly each summer for the arrival of this prehistoric shark movie?  Jan De Bont was attached to direct this film and I was so psyched to see a new shark movie that sounded like it was going to blow ‘Jaws’ and ‘Deep Blue Sea’ out of the water. Unfortunately, the project got dropped, and although there’s STILL talk that it will happen, somehow I feel like I will have kids and have had gotten my tubes tied by the time this baby arrives in theatres.

2. Alice-I was 15 when I had heard that they were making a dark tale of Alice in the Wonderland based off the popular video game which would star Sarah Michelle Gellar. 8 years later, (yes, you can do the math if you want to find out my age :P) and Sarah Michelle Gellar is STILL attached to this project!  If this movie is going to happen, I highly doubt that SMG will be Alice still, unless they drastically change the premise.

3. Evil Dead 4/Evil Dead Remake-I’m still one of those faithful fans that believe that ‘Evil Dead 4’ will be made. I hope to see Ash battle Candarian demons just one more time. However, there has been more talk about the remake, than the much demanded sequel. It has been years since we’ve starting hearing about numerous rumors about actors to play Ash. Ashton Kutcher, Sean William Scott, and even Wes Bentley were rumored to play the boomstick-wielding hero. (I still vote for Nicholas Brendon. Read my article as to why HERE.)  If either one are coming to the big screen, I don’t think it will be for A LONG TIME. (So I guess you’re just going to have to stock up on the countless editions to the ‘Evil Dead’ series in the meantime.)

4. Inglorious Bastards/Vegas Brothers

I love Quentin Tarantino. He is one of the reasons why I love film in the first place. Despite the fact that of him being one of my idols, I can’t deny that he talks a lot sh*t in regarding his so called upcoming projects. When he first announced he was going to do a war film called ‘Inglorious Bastards,’ fan boys were ecstatic. I, myself was more interested in the rumored ‘Vegas Brothers’ project, that would be a spin off prequel to ‘Reservoir Dogs’ and ‘Pulp Fiction.’  However, since John Travolta and Michael Madsen are too old to play the roles now, and due to the fact Quentin has severe ADD, I don’t think we will see those projects PERIOD.

5. Buffy/Angel Movie– Four words. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. If you still find yourself wanting to know what happens to these characters, go buy the season 8 comics instead.

6. Scream 4– Yes, I have to admit, I’m a HUGE Scream fan. However, I was NOT a fan of the last installment. I felt so let down by how they decided to end the series. I also felt that if they had Kevin Williamson penning the script, the film would have been a lot darker and a lot scarier. For years, there has been talk about a sequel to ‘Scream 3.’  Last year, I got excited twice when I heard Neve “I don’t have a career anymore” Campbell in fact WANTED to reprise the role of Sidney Prescott. Unfortunately, most of the rumors have died down, as well as my anticipation for a new film. (Or so I say…:P)

7. True Lies 2-‘True Lies 2’ has been on my mind since I had first seen the original film. (That was 14 years ago!!!) I think it’s a sequel most Arnold fans wanted to see. It could be the comeback movie for Tom Arnold. It would give Jamie Lee Curtis something decent to do, guys could drool over a grown up Eliza Dushku, and maybe fans could be treated to another “cowardly performance” by Bill Paxton again. If Arnold ever returns to film, (which there is no doubt in my mind he will) I hope this is the first project he chooses.

8. Batman vs Superman Movie-I thought it was a very cruel joke to pull on fans by teasing them with a ‘Batman vs Superman’ movie poster being shown in ‘I am Legend.’ If they can’t even get a Justice League movie off the ground, I don’t think fans should be holding their breath for this superhero movie either.

9. Escape From Earth– John Carpenter fans will probably know what I’m talking about. Years ago, there was talk about the Snake Plissken films becoming a trilogy. Even though I much rather see  the John Carpenter/Kurt Russell collaborations, ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ and ‘The Thing’ become a franchise, I was very excited at seeing another ‘Snake’ movie.  Unfortunately, the talk has died down about a possible third installment after the commercial failure of ‘Escape From L.A.’  Also, because of the upcoming remake of ‘Escape of New York,’ a third film does NOT seem feasible.

10. Jurassic Park 4-For years we have heard about talks about another sequel to the popular ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise. Due to production delays, endless script revisions, and the WGA strike, the fourth installment is still currently in production hell.  However, when the film does get made, I do have a few suggestions.

a) BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL CAST
We have seen all the original cast members return throughout the series, yet not all together in one sequel.  Every time I watch ‘The Lost World,’ I miss Dr. Alan Grant’s presence. In the third film, I miss Ian Malcolm’s presence. If they do a sequel, hopefully they bring back EVERYBODY. (Even Julianne Moore and Vince Vaughn would be cool!)

b) BRING BACK THE T-REX

The Spinosaurus killing the T-rex so effortlessly in the third installment was f*cking bullsh*t.!  I don’t want to see this f*cking fictional gigantic dinosaur who can somehow sneak up on its prey like a ninja and miraculously have a phone be heard from its stomach from miles away become the next alpha dinosaur in the series.  The T-rex is the ULTIMATE bad ass dinosaur, and that’s how it should stay.  (The raptors are a close second)

c) FOR THE LOVE OF GOD…FIND THE F*CKING CAN ALREADY!!

I don’t know why this has bothered me so much, but I never understood why the films never went back to this particular subplot in the series.  Newman from Seinfeld dropped the can of DINO DNA in the mud after he was eaten.  Why hasn’t it been found yet? It was such an obvious setup! USE IT!

d) GIVE ME A SEA MONSTER!
In the third film, it was hinted that we would have seen a sea dinosaur; however, it was just the stupid Spinosaurus in the water. Bullsh*t!
e) THIS ONE WON’T HAPPEN BUT….

Bring back Steven Spielberg as the director!

What are your choice films that you’ve been dying to see?

Other honorable ‘Don’t your breath’ mentions: Barberella, HALO, Six Million Dollar Man, and the new He-Man Movie

  1. O , guess what? U: what? Ok since I love the Spinosaurus so much… My class is leting me wright a large huge report on it. So HAH and HAH!

  2. Ok that is mean the SPINOSAURUS is the best most coolest dino ever made. U ask me I ould hurt u the Spinosaurus is the best stop teasing it or get a wipping out of me! Yet I have seen all of the Jurassic PArk movies and the 4th one will not be as good as the third the third has the Spino , dude c’mon!

  3. Jurassic Park Iv is coming out in 2009 can’t wait for that movie. I think they took your advice and some of the original cast is going to be in the movie. Also Scream 4 was not actually scream 4 it was a rip off of the movie and not affiliated with the scream franchise and hopefully they decide to make either a remake of it or a part 4 for real. Great blog keep up the good work.

  4. I think they should make DINO CRISIS or HAUNTING GROUND or RESIDENT EVIL 4 movies like that are bound to be awesome I loved the games so why not the movies?

  5. Ohkay im back! Actually Alex the specimen that was destroyed during WWII was Carcharodontosaurus Saharicus. bigger than the Spinosaurus it was the only one of its kind found and now lost forever. its so sad that little is known about this creature. it was being studied in Germany during WWII when it was detroyed.

  6. also because of the confusion with the whole Spinosaurus Egypticus thing i now feel compelled to find out the facts myself. my whole reason for coming here was to find out the truth and instead i jus got more confused. And Alex, i would definitely check your theory on the bomb on the museum thing… because if its true i now feel some type of way about that! and Jeff, i didnt forget about your theory either. i’ll be looking into that one as well.

  7. i would definitely love to see another Jurrasic Park movie and another Scream movie!!! I’m really big fans of both. Cant wait til part three of Underworld and part four to X-Men!! and im definitely excited that Batman finally made it back to the silver screen. i do agree with a Family Guy movie cause those people are halarious! and last but not least… a Smallville movie. only because they’re doin soo much for the tv show that they might as well take some of that action, drama and suspense and put it together for a movie! i think if they take their time and do it like its suposed to be done then it would wind up being a really good film!

  8. i would plane and simple LOVE to see a FAMILY GUY MOVIE does anyone eles agree? also id like to see a Knight Rider movie :- but ONLY if they got the real trans-am back, oh and thr Hoff lol, and last but not least a propper good (Show us them fighting in the city smashing the shit out of biuldings) Monster Movie and i mean GIANT monsters not just little geeks running around lol, And as some people said up there at the top there i do agree with you a new Godzilla movie would rule but do it proper even if they id a CGI Godzilla but make it look just like the Japan Godzilla and also a Predator 3 awsome stuff, anyway please fell free to comment on anything i said bye.

  9. Well, I don’t have much on my list right now, but here’s what I got:
    -TMNT 2: The sequel to the re-imagining of Ninja Turtles was apparently a 70-30 chance of happening at one point, now it seems entirely pointless;
    -Jurassic Park 4: At this point, I think a remake that’s closer to the first book would be in order, chances are the next movie would have to change it’s name, not to make it feel like the forth movie;
    -Justice League of America: This one is going to be cancelled, I know it;
-Max Payne movie: Not particulary excited, throw in some John Woo antics…otherwise not interested.

That’s all I can think off, as of now.

  10. One film I had always wanted to see.
The sequal to Jet Li’s Kung Fu Cult Hero.
You know at the end there was a hint that the journey would continue with Jet following the villians to the eternal city or somewhat.
    NEVER GONNA HAPPEN. boo hoo!!

  11. Tobor68
Sly did it and for rocky balboa and wasnt that bad!
I think they almost same age.
And you never know the batman/superman movie maybe was the real reason why everybody left NY in the first place!

  12. I’ve always wanted to see a sequel to “The Professional.” I think seeing Natalie Portman as a “cleaner” would be really cool to watch. When I saw the trailer to V for Vendetta, for a second I thought that was it, but oh well. Vendetta was still pretty cool. Anybody else agree?

  13. While we’re on the topic of movies that we would love to see made, how about TV series that died after a short lived run that deserve to come back??? FIREFLY!!!

  14. fight club 2
    Nick fury vs red-skull…
starcraft movie, in the style blizzard does its cut-scenes
    jurrasic park 4,
    predator 3

the rest i really want comes out this or next year indie4, wolverine, sequel to daywatch(dont know the name) transformers2,underworld3 and hopefully the hobbit1.

  15. i think the jurrassic park series should have followed the book. there was a dinosaur better than all the rest. i can’t remember which book, but none of the other dinosaur would cross its path.

  16. I think the World’s Finest movie is something we would see eventually see. It’s only a matter of time before DC i.e., Warner takes a hint from Marvel and realizes its better to copy Marvels strategy. It means more movies, more viewers, and more $$$$$. They can’t afford to not at least try and do something similar to what Marvel is doing. Knocking on some wood wouldn’t hurt though. ;-)

  17. the thing i got from ‘i am legend’ is this: the world will end before anyone gets to see the batman/superman movie.

@takata: arnie in king conan would be awesome. provided he could ever bulk up again. but i honestly think he’s probably too old.

  18. I honestly don’t want to see Tarantino “make” (code word for steal) any more movies, period.

I’m really sick of his dialogue, his penchant for “homages”(another codeword for “stolen film”), and his overall douchebaggery.

I’ve always like Robert Rodriguez better, despite Shark Boy and Lava Girl.

  19. Hey Folks…

Ender’s game Wolfgang Peterson where are you now?
    >
On a Pale Horse…Jamie Foxx as death?
    >
    3 Xanth trilogies (9 Movies)
    >
Hollywood please take a look at the Alvin Maker novels from OSC.
    >
Quick feedback from yall…working on a screenplay describing it as Mallrats meets Super Troopers and is based around Mall Security guards. (The future of our country)

  20. Wow Serena, 23 years old and writing movie blogs! That’s hot! (in my best paris impersonation). Well, although we both have waited 8 years since the announcement of Alice, I dont think I have really “waited” for this movie to come out. It sounds neat, but I have not seen a very good video game movie yet. Nope, not even Resident Evil. Mortal Kombat should have been awesome, but it sucked. Otherwise, most of these that you mention in this list, that “you are not holding your breath for” are either sequels, coat-tail riders, spin-offs, or whatevers. I would not hold my breath even if they were green-lit. Even if Spielberg did Part 4 of Jurassic Park I would probably wait for video. I mean, cinema is suddenly becoming television!! Whats the deal? Just the episodes are not one week apart, they are 1 year or more apart. What Lost does in an entire season beats out any of these franchise films all at once. And with lower budgets in quicker times. I get 22 hours of high quality cinematic entertainment that is original and unique all at once in one year! And they serve me Spider-Man episode 3 that is the raunchiest, sickest, most twisted piece of exploitation junk since Russ Meyers. At least he had the decency to show off some tits and ass and be honest about what you were getting. Ugh. ok. Did I make my point on this? Thanks :::steps off pedestal:::

  21. Ok, just to let those who don’t know there was a complete set of dinosaur bones of that of the Spinosaurus. The reason why no really knows much about is because a bomb was dropped on the museum that housed it during WWII.

  22. Hell Yeah Serena! I want Plesiosaurs in Jurassic Park 4 too! We find out a Plesiosaur is Nessie!!!As an added bonus, The shaving cream is found by a one armed, uber survivor Sam Jackson! Vince Vaughn comes back to save people, including his career!

    ****

    MEG!

    Say no more.

    ****

Forget the Vega Bros. Where’s ‘Fox Force Five’? Or better yet, Quentin’s take on Men From U.N.C.L.E?

    David Lynch’s “Ronnie Rocket”.

“Crisis In The Hot Zone” – anyone remember this one? Way back when Jodie Foster and Robert Redford was attatched to it…but the script went through rewrites, delays? Then they dropped out and WB’s Outbreak was all by its lonesome?

“Godzilla” – the Jan De Bont version w/The earlier sp by Elloit & Rossio.

    AND last but not least….

    Warlord Of Mars
    i.e. John Carter.

  23. About the Jurassic Park DNA Can, it was stated in the movie that it only had enough coolant for 48 hours, which means after that, the stuff inside would be useless. The reason it showed it getting covered in mud and all that, was to pretty much show that its lost, and Dodgson’s BioSyn company never gets it.

  24. EXCELLENT SUGGESTIONS SERENA!!!!

That’s what Jurassic Park needs. And it was like you read my mind, i’ve always felt that subplot of Newman (actually he was called Nedry) needed to be used, it was perfect. And the Sea dinosaurs!!!!!! what a great idea.

  25. I’m with Serena on this one — I always felt the dropped can was clearly a foreshadowing of a possible sequel and was puzzled they didn’t use it…

I would have loved to see a follow up to John Carpenter’s The Thing (directed, of course, by John Carpenter).

  26. I would love to see Inglorious Bastards, even the title is great. It’s perpetually his next movie. It’s always on the horizon but then he decides he just has to do Jason XI first. It’s infuriating (Infuriating Bastards?).

Serena, I’m curious why you asterix out swear words?

  27. movies I’m dying to see:

movie version of “Good Omens” by Neil Gaiman and Terry Prachet. There were rumors a while back that Johnny Depp was going to star in it. It never happened :(. It’s a shame too, this book would make a very entertaining movie

movie version of “Ender’s Game”. There’s rumors that the author of the book wants to see it happen now. I hope it does.

    A sequel to “Serenity”…ya, it’s not happening.

  28. Oops! My bad! You guys are so right. (*hits forehead) I think why I got confused about the spinosaurus is at the time they had found the fossils, but they embellished the look of the dinosaur for the movie. Thanks for the history lesson :)

  29. This is a great topic.

Out of that bunch you picked here, I firmly believe that INGLORIOUS BASTARDS will happen and also, at some point, there will be a JURASSIC PARK 4.

If there is indeed a god, there will be another EVIL DEAD 4 with Bruce Campell, without him there’s no point.

If there is indeed a god, there won’t be a BARBARELLA-remake. The original film is one of my favorite movies of all time and there is no way one can improve on it. The Hollywood of today would strip it of all the qualities that made it brilliant in the first place. Plus, you just can’t replace Jane Fonda. They just don’t make woman like her anymore.

  30. And an X-Men film with Sentinels in it.

    Another X-Men movie….period.

A great movie from 20th Century Fox while Tom Rothman is in charge.

    Wonder Woman.

Another James Cameron film (only because it’s quite dangerous to hold your breath till 2009).

  31. Ah, didn’t see your reply. I really don’t see what good it would do to find that can… considering the embreyos are clearly all dead. What could someone gain from them?

  32. @Serena

First, I totally agree that Nedry’s shaving cream canister w/dino DNA was completely overlooked after the first Jurassic Park film. In the book it was found and it makes sense that eventually it would be found.

Second, Spinosaurus Egypticus is in fact a REAL dinosaur that was discovered as JP3 was in pre-production. A complete skeleton has yet to be discovered, but they have discovered the skull, sail, leg and tail bones from which they extrapolated the creature’s hight, length and weight.

  33. @WolfMarauder

The can is open to interpretation. Sure, in the movie it foreshadowed that the Jurassic Park project was going to be buried….but to the audience it foreshadowed the strong possibility of a sequel. I still believe it will be fo

  34. Predator 3

That’s about it. Why do I want a Predator movie again? Because it is badass and there is so much more that could be explored with a little thought I believe. None of this shitty AvP crap.

  35. The dropped can was not a setup for a plotline. The sequence of it being buried in the mud was a symbol foreshadowing of what was going to happen to the Jurassic Park project.

  36. @Marla-You made a good point. What the hell happened to Chapter 27 indeed?!

@ Kevin- I love Night Breed….there’s a comic book series…you should read them!

@ Mason-Yes, the dinosaur IS ficitional.

  37. Are you sure the Spinosaurus is fictional? There is a description of one in my textbook that describes it as potentially the largest carnivorous dinosaur, though they mention that a T-Rex would probably kick its ass (I paraphrased that last part).

  38. I loved the movie Night Breed back in the day based on the Clive Barker book Cabal, and it looked like they were setting it up for a sequel …..that was 1990 so i guess i am shit outta luck.

For a horror movie it had a really cool storey and great characters.

  39. I have been waiting and waiting and WAITING to see “The Rum Diary” with Johnny Depp and it just keeps getting pushed back and pushed back.. and i’ve been wondering whatever happened to the john lennon movie “Chapter 27” where Jared Leto gained 50lbs for the role of the assassin. I’ve also been curious about the re-make of “The Day the Earth Stood Still”. And i have been waiting for “MEG” to be made as well! well… i suppose i’m really just happy that theres a new Batman this year:)
