Michael Bay Revamps ‘Friday the 13th’

friday-13th.jpgWith my experience in the horror movie community, anytime you mutter the words “Platinum Dunes” around a hard-core horror fanatic, it will usually be followed by a string of curse words. If you’re one of those people, prepare for another “tourettes syndrome” spasm. The rumors are true. Michael Bay will be producing the ‘Friday the 13th’ remake through his low budget production company, Platinum Dunes. (The company is also responsible for Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hitcher remake)

A few weeks ago, I posted about how the writers of Freddy vs Jason are most likely going to be writing the script. Again, unfortunately, that news is sadly true.

The Hollywood Reporter gives us this:

Damian Shannon and Mark Swift have been tapped to write “Friday the 13th,” the remake of the horror classic being produced by Platinum Dunes for New Line.

Paramount released the original “Friday” in 1980, making Jason — the unstoppable hockey mask-wearing killer — a horror icon, though the serial killer made only a brief appearance in the final frames of the first movie and never killed anyone. Jason didn’t even don the famous mask until the third movie.

The remake, however, will focus on Jason — who will wear the mask and kill — and keep the famous setting of Crystal Lake.

So is anyone actually really psyched for this flick? I wasn’t a big ‘Friday the 13th’ fan when I was growing up. (My loyalties belonged to Michael Myers…lol) Do I think this slasher remake is a recipe for disaster? No. It will make money and probably be medicore at best. Honestly, they can’t be any worse than the last few Jason sequels we have seen. Although, I won’t be lining up in theatres when it slashes it way onto the big screen.

  1. I really wish that they would move on to other things rather than beat the remake thing to death. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it a thousand times, Hollywood has officially run out of ideas. I’m not a huge fan of the Friday the 13th series myself, I honestly think Michael Myers and the Halloween series is so much better, but still I would rather not see this get remade. Just wait for it, soon they will be remaking A Nightmare on Elm Street. I mean they are already getting ready to redo Hellraiser, so why not throw Freddy into the batch?!

On a final note, if they want to start on a good note I really hope they get Kane Hodder back to play Jason.

  2. They should reamke Jason takes Manhatten or Jason in Paris. Just do something completely ridiculous because that’s all the Friday the 13th series is. complete and utter ridiculousness. Just look at Jason X or Jason takes Manhatten. Those movies were “good” because they didn’t try to be anything but pure camp. Knowing that the Freddy Vs. Jason writers are onboard is kind of comforting because I think they understand that Jason is a cheesey character to begin with. Don’t make it serious like Halloween or Texas Chainsaw Massacre, just have a really big dude in a hockey mask killing really stupid hot chicks and the guys that love to bone them.

  3. Ok, I guess Im one of the few that really like Jason vs Freddy. The writers hire to do remake of Friday 13th is good news to me. After watching the Friday series last weekend (Holloween mode) I can see that this series could do well with a remake. However it can also be poesed for disaster if 1. The movie isnt the least scary. and 2. The movie isnt all that fun to watch. Lets hope theres not a prologe to show how Jason in the same way Michel Myers was in his remake. Cause I dont want to feel compassion for a monster.

  4. S. I know you are a horror buff, so I will be careful with my words and not make any incorrect statements which you will be able to correct me on.

This will not, and can not be a remake. If the Mother is not the killer, then it’s just another Friday the 13th movie. We will get some back story on Jason and him being picked on when he was a camper, and left to drown in the lake, but from what I read, they don’t sound and I certainly hope they will not be retconing the whole story.

As a fan of horror, I wasn’t disapointed in the Texas Massacure movies, nor was I upset with the Hallaween remake. No horror movies (slasher or monster) are fantastic in the first place, they just appeal to people like you and me, who like a good scare and to see young girls scream with their breasts out – ok maybe that last one is more for me.

Items you can count on in a Friday the 13th movie will be:
    – Some good jump out at you moments
    – A skinny dipping scene.
    – Bloody slasher kills
    – Topless girls having a pillow fight in their cabin.
    – Some one will get an axe in the head, or impaled to a tree.
    – Teenagers having unprotected sex in the woods.

What more do you want in a good old fashion horror movie.

I will line up in the theaters for this one.

  5. who couldnt see this coming? i picked this ages ago…they were never going to remkae the original film…they want that hocky mask and jasons name to help sell the flick plain and simple..

so instead of a remake we are just going to get what will boil down into another sequel really…..

the friday series isn’t very good.
there is only one genuinely great film at that is part 6.

    the rest are incredibly average.

  6. I was only got into te 13th movie when they started to let the “jason is an unkillable murdering machine” thing run a bit free… made it seem cooler… less horror (in a sense) but just knowing that jason couldn’t die was scary enough. I faithful remake of the original would be boooring… they need to let jason kick some serious ass!

  7. REMAKES!!!! I’m really getting tired of remakes! Does’nt anyone in Hollywood have a freakin original idea? It’s bad enough they took a good original Friday the 13th and made like 36 sequels, but now we must remake the original. Does this mean they will remake the crappy one where Jason was in New York? Give me a brake!!!

  8. You really want to know a nifty idea? You really want to know what Bay’s Dunes can do to impress me? Do a remake….of….SATURDAY THE 14TH.

    hahahahahahahahahahaha
    hohoho

Seriously, I’m not quite sure why Bay’s Dunes co. can’t pick up a fresh script or find a new horror icon. Usher in a new horror icon, get a new franchise cooked up. If they attempt it, I bet the horror fans-let alone film fans- will stop being the thorn in the side.

At the rate these guys are going…the other two things left to be redone will be…’Silent Rage’ (the Chuck Norris vs. Bogeyman thingie from ’82) and ‘Ghoulies’…

  9. So I assume that Jason isn’t going to be comming out in this movie? He is pretty much associated with the franchise its hard to think about the franchise with out him.

  10. The Friday the 13th movies were never particularly good to begin with, some of them were just plain stupid fun, but that’s all they were. So I’m not really bothered by this news, though knowing Platinum Dunes, they will fuck it up.
