Live Action Doctor Strange Movie

Doctor-Strange-MovieI’m a total sucker for comic book movies. Don’t matter how awful it looks, or how bad I know it’s going to be, you can bet I’ll generally be there opening day to see it when it comes out… cause I’m a geek. I don’t like Iron Man at all… but I’m dying to see this movie now. I think Thor is a stupid as hell comic and an even dumber idea for a movie… but after seeing Matthew Vaughn direct “Stardust” I’m all for seeing what he does with the character now. Eventually, I usually come around. But Doctor Strange?

Our friends over at IESB have this news for us:

The full length animated feature of Doctor Strange was officially released by Marvel today and the IESB is able to exclusively reveal that a live action Doctor Strange is currently in development. Marvel has started taking the property around town and pitching it to potential directors. While we can’t confirm if a script has been completed or even commissioned, it’s rumored to be written by an unnamed writer.

This would actually be pretty consistent with the pattern Marvel has shown recently. The Iron Man animated movies came out first… now the live action movie is in development… the Doctor Strange animated film is out now… so I guess it was just a matter of time.

But Doctor Strange? Really? I’ve got no opinion of Strange either way since I’ve read VERY little with him in it. I have no clue if he’s a great character or dumb one. HOWEVER… who the hell is Doctor Strange? Will the general, non-comic book fan, movie going audience member have any interest in this character? Personally, I highly doubt it… but who knows right?

So for those of you who know anything about Doctor Strange… what do you think? Good idea? Bad idea?

  1. Doctor Strange is the sorceror supreme of our deminsion. I never read much of him but from what i have read and seen in the animated movie he really is an interesting character. It caught my attention and i really enjoy him. A live action movie will be what i will want to see.

  2. Done right a Dr. Strange movie would be great. I dont get how people say there’s no way he could stand alone… Personally Dr. Strange is one of my favorite comic book characters and I’ve been waiting for a new movie. Actor casting is the only thing that i think would be tough for this movie.

  3. I am a person who reads a lot of the comic book world, I also have the pleasure of knowing many people in many places. Here’s What i have collected in data on The Sorcerer Supreme Dr. Strange. Supposedly the idea has been tossed around about having Tim Curry, as in Tim Curry of Rocky Horror Picture Show Fame, play Dr. Strange, I think he could do it.

Another Thing i heard is that It might Not be Just Dr. Strange. We may get to see the ultimate mix of Marvels Supernaturals. If you all dont remember The Supernaturals was lead by Dr. Strange, consisted of Thor, Blade, and Ghost Rider. All these characters were not like any other superhero, hence there groups name. The Supernaturals.

Seeing as how we have seen an influx of Comic Movies coming to market, we may very well see the Arrival of this so called Movie. I think it would be interesting to see. Dr. Strange was a major player in many series of comics. cross overs to severl of marvels other major players. for Instance Doc Doom, and Dr. Strange have a strange past together. dont believe me check into it, you will be shocked.

  4. I just watched the new animated Dr. Strange movie that Marvel put out on DVD. It was great! A well told origin story and introduction to Dr. Strange. Magical martial arts vs. Lovecraftian monsters. Like Crouching Tiger meets Ghostbusters. A live action Strange movie should take this version and improve upon it, maybe adding more humor and character development.

Of the four animated direct to video movies Marvel has put out, I think Dr. Strange is the best so far. The first Avengers movie was pretty good, but it’s sequel and the Iron Man movie were kinda weak. Marvel plans on putting out a new video each quarter, so there will be sequels and new hero titles introduced in the future. It’s a great idea and it allows for better quality animation and better story telling compared to DC’s stable of half-hour after-school TV shows. It’s also a great way to bring back lesser known characters and start the buzz for future live action blockbusters. I’d love to see a Ms. Marvel animated movie or maybe Spider-Woman.

I definitely recommend picking this video up, especially if you’ve never heard of Dr. Strange.

Also, Adrian Brody would make a great live action Dr. Strange, I think. That is, if the can’t get Johnny Depp of course!

  5. “Daredevil is NOT a minor character. Even I know that”

sorry for correcting you,John, but you need to go back & re-listen to your own podcasts. i was quoting you.

  6. Doc Strange would be great, as long as they don’t try to modernize him. His enemies weren’t your typical two bit bank robbers, or criminal masterminds. He dealt with the occult, travelled to other dimensions and fought creatures beyond our human comprehension.

I’d prefer the powers that be were less obsessed with making these characters into movies and instead do a series. Sure when the movies smash box office records they make mad money. Though the studios tend to be creative on how much profit a movie makes. But when they flop, they really flop.

  7. Hey Sir Jig,

If you “rest your case” then your case is pretty weak. Blade was an exception… made $70 million… not bad.

Daredevil is NOT a minor character. Even I know that

So what happens when they do it on minor characters:

    Elektra – BOMB
    Catwoman – BOMB

It is POSSIBLE that they can work… but it’s an uphill battle.

  8. “But a comic book movie that non-comic book fans have no idea about… is fighting an uphill battle. That’s just a fact.”

nobody knew who the fuck Blade was with the first movie outside of serious comic nuts. that made some nice loot. ditto for the ‘minor character’ called Daredevil.i rest my case.

  9. Hey Kopetkai

This is a comic book movie. You think Batman would have done half as well if no one knew who he was? In a comic genre movie, recognition of the character is quite important. It’s not impossible for the movie to do well without it… but it hurts.

    Sorry guys, that’s just fact.

That has nothing to do with weather or not he film will be GOOD. But a comic book movie that non-comic book fans have no idea about… is fighting an uphill battle. That’s just a fact.

  10. “Why are you so worried about people knowing who doctor strange is? Isn’t that what the movie is for?”

Exactly Kopetkai, but Campea, like I’ve said before on his Thor post is judging a book by it’s cover.

  11. Why are you so worried about people knowing who doctor strange is? Isn’t that what the movie is for? I didn’t know who Hannibal Lector was until I saw Silence of the Lambs, and that movie turned out alright.

  12. Exclusively reveal? This is old news. marvel has released this information with their Movie list of what they want to do for themselves since they got their own financing deals, and has been rumored to have been shopped around even be fore that. Some people just like to seem important i guess. I think this could work if done right. Looking forward to see what they can do.

  13. Actually…with films like the Harry Potter franchise, TV shows like Medium, Dresden Files and Charmed? Doctor Strange would work onscreen. Fans of those films and shows could be drawn to Doc Strange. The character is VERY adaptable.

I don’t agree that he should be teamed up with any other Marvel character (Spider-Man 2 in-jokes aside) -that isn’t the problem. His robes and emblem? They won’t look that bad/cheesy. Especially if he crosses over into fantastic, otherworldly reality planes and the like. That’s not a problem.

But there is a problem. The origin story.
    What?

    Yep. Here’s why: Batman Begins.
I fear a Doc Strange adap will run into this snafu. While on one hand, the comics fans/Strange fans will think it’s great that they stick to the origin story as much as possible, the general public will unfairly accuse it of ripping of ‘Batman Begins’.

In the Strange origin, Strange has an accident which makes him unable to perform his surgeon duties. After a period of time where he loses most of his wealth and near homeless, he learns of ‘The Ancient One’ and travels to the **Himalayas** to learn advice, spirituality and other re-connections to his inner child. The Ancient One is not a buddist monk, but rather a powerful sorcerer, kind of like, well the late Sir Ralph Richardson in Dragonslayer. Or a modern day Gandalf if you will. In that ballpark.

Ancient One ‘expected’ Strange, and asks him to be his new apprentice. Strange refuses, but due to a snowstorm, has to crash at the A O’s pad. Meanwhile, Baron Mordo, AO’s current apprentice, wants to use his power for evil. Strange discovers Mordo’s plan for killing the teacher. Mordo puts a spell on Strange, which binds him from physically stopping Mordo and that Strange cannot warn the A O.

Deciding the only way to stop Mordo then, is to learn to fight fire with fire, he accepts to be taught by the Ancient One. AO releases the Mordo spell and says he was aware of Mordo’s plans (indeed, Mordo had tried to attack AO with a zombie skeleton army earlier) but wants Mordo around, hoping that Mordo could one day be redeemed.

Strange defeats Mordo; goes back to the States.

    ***

So, IN THE FILM if Strange goes to the AO’s place in the snowy mountains up around Nepal, isn’t it possible some jackoff out there is going to say, ‘Batman!’ ? Bet on it.
Oddly, an earlier unmade LA Strange script from many years ago…was written by David Goyer.

Now, the baddie will most likely be Mordo, and maybe Mordo will indeed off AO, but not before AO can pass off some tricks and tips to Strange. There will be an encounter with Dormannu, (sic) so we can get Clea in fishnet stocking.

    As for director?

In a perfect world, David Lynch (serious) or David Cronenberg.
But I would like Marv to ask about Scott Derrickson of Emily Rose fame.
    Those are my top 3…

    or Sam Raimi.

  14. a Doc Stange flick could incorporate the Blade character as they’ve fought numerous times alongside each other to rid the eart of vampirism.
i see that happening down the line if the first one is a hit.

  15. I remember watching the doctor strange tv film in the 70’s/80’s when i was a kid, it was kinda cool then but a bit cheesey by todays standards. I doubt he could wear the getup he does in the comic books & TV film otherwise he’ll come across as a bit camp.

  16. Jim cavezzal could play strange, that guy has a really good likable feel about him, but after the count of monte cristo and passion, did he do deus vau (and play as a killer) because he didnt want to get typecast he wasnt even on the bloody box. Strange indeed?

  17. Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Universe, responsible for defending it from mystic threats. He is a master of the mystic arts, using his abilities to battle evil magicians and other supernatural villains. He is also often consulted by other superheroes on supernatural matters. …..WIKI

this guy has a massive part in the marvel universe….im not a fan boy but i new this…..for some one who is a sucker for comiv book movies….u would have to love this guys stories…like i said he plays a huge part of the marvel universe

  18. Strange is basically a Special Effects powerhouse. So if the trailer has lots of pretty things in it, you bet your ass that people will talk bout it.

  19. He would be kind of cool if they put him in spiderman to help him, but a movie for himself it will suck. Might be cool because of the magic but bot a good comicbook movie. maybe I will watch the dr strange movie that came out today to see if a movie would be something cool to look forward too.
