Films That Deserved Better – Office Space

Office-Space-Poster-3FILMS THAT DESERVED BETTER is an ongoing feature here on The Movie Blog of movies that failed to attract an audience at the theaters and failed to perform well at the boxoffice, yet were exceptional films. We just want to give out a hardy slap on the back and say “We love ya anyway”.

When I first decided to do this feature I instantly knew one of the film that just HAD to be on this list was Office Space. A lot of people today forget that when office space came out, it was an absolute bomb. It just barely crawled over $10 million. No, not on opening weekend… that’s $10 million in total… and the damn movie has Jennifer Aniston in it, who was pretty much as hot as she’s ever been in her career in 1999.

Wrap your heads around that… a movie that makes a lot of people’s “Best comedies ever” list someplace, and yet we never gave it the love it deserved. This film was just beyond hilarious, and thankfully it has indeed found its audience after the fact on DVD. But still.. this was a movie that deserved much better when in theaters.

Who can forget:

Peter: “What would you do if you had a million dollars?”

Lawrence: “I’ll tell you what I’d do, man, two chicks at the same time.”

Or

Michael: “We get caught laundering money, we’re not going to white collar resort prison. No, no, no. We’re going to fucking federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison!”

Ah yes… good times, good times. This movie is in every sense of the word a classic. For those of you who still haven’t treated yourself, get out there and grab a copy tonight… laugh till 3am.

  1. Who cares if it bombed in it’s theatrical run?
“Office Space” is a cult classic already and will be for decades to come. It’s hilarious from start to end.
Everybody should love this movie and if you don’t, I’ll set the building on fire.

  2. “I’ll be honest with you, I love his music, I do, I’m a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, I don’t know if it gets any better than when he sings When a Man Loves a Woman”.

Patrick, do something about that tin ear and listen to the Percy Sledge version. Once you do that you’ll come to the logical conclusion. Michael Bolton is a piece of shit.

  3. a funny film that anyone that enjoys comedies should watch. Sucked that it bombed when it first release, but it has a great following now, which is great.

  4. And give it up for the great John C. McGinley as Bob Slydell.

“I’ll be honest with you, I love his music, I do, I’m a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, I don’t know if it gets any better than when he sings When a Man Loves a Woman”.

  5. You don’t need a million dollars to do nothing, my cousin’s broke, don’t do shit.

This really is one of those great quotable comedies like Caddyshack and The Big Lebowski

  6. Oh I disagree with Idiocracy… I rented it because I saw Mike Judge did the film… hoping that he’d repeat his magic that came through with B&B and Office Space. Idiocracy had a great premise but would have to be on my list of one of the worst films ever made. It just didn’t work for me. Office Space is just classic though… some of the best characters I’ve ever seen on film.

  7. You should probably do Mike Judge’s other film Idiocracy. Its almost as good as Office Space. The movie only made about $444,093. Mike Judge makes some smart comedies that are really funny but unfortunately not commercial successful.

  8. Um…yeah…look….here’s my TPS.

I too was a little surprised that the Mike Judge directed comedy didn’t do well the first time around. Not even broke even? Man, that’s rough.

Hey, I dig Jennifer’s “Flair”, but Gary Cole (Lumbergh) cracked me up more than anything or anyone else…aside from Stephen Root as Milton.
