Armageddagain: Disaster Spoof Movie

nuke.jpegNews today about an upcoming disaster spoof movie, we get the news from movieweb:

Screen Gems has purchased the rights to Armageddagain: The Day Before Tomorrow. According to Variety, it is a spoof of disaster movies directed by Robert Moniot. It is based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Travis Oates.

The film will focus its jokes on such flicks as Armageddon and Independence Day to Transformers and The Bourne Ultimatum. Production will begin in August. Look for the film to be released sometime next year.

I have never been a huge fan of spoof films, I usually avoid them if possible, although some films that I like have had some spoof elements in them (like when The Naked Gun mocked the pottery scene from Ghost). When a whole film is just a clip show of other movies acted out again – it just comes off as lame to me.

This is the first time disaster movies have had their own spoof movie, and if you are into this sort of thing – I hope I am a bringer of good news. I do not mind a good disaster movie, disaster makes for wicked special effects and instills the feeling of doom like nothing else can. We will see if they can make this genre spoof-able, there are a lot of cliches to be made fun of, perhaps it will work.

  1. Dr. Stranglove, anyone? Wasn’t a spoof, but more of a loose political satire .

As for spoofing diaster films, didn’t the last two ‘Scary Movie” films cover some of that ground (War Of The Worlds, anyway)?

For every Hot Shots Part Duex, Robin Hood: Men In Tights or I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, there’s a Not Another Teen Movie, Saturday The 14th or a Loaded Weapon 1.

Besides- why do we need a spoof of disaster films? We don’t, really.

  2. Lame… but at least they didn’t call it “Disaster Movie.”

I’m convinced that nobody knows how to write or direct or act in spoof movies any more. It’s tough, but there hasn’t been a good one in years (perhaps the last decent one was Robin Hood: Men in Tights – but that was done by a master, so it’s understandable). I guess Kung Pow was pretty funny at points, but the last 1/3 of the movie really sunk.

A few good spoofs: Spaceballs, Airplane!, Young Frankenstein…

If you consider The Princess Bride a spoof (which I don’t, but some do), it’s the best of the lot.
