Warner And The MPAA Say Canada and New York City Account For 110% Of Piracy.

Sometimes the stupidity of some people just makes me hang my head. Warner Bros. is once again making wild unfounded claims (or “lies” as they’re often called) about how much Piracy comes out of Canada. As a matter of fact, now their contradicting themselves.

According to the MPAA (of which Warner Bros. is a huge member), Canada is responsible for 70% of pirated movies. Did you hear that? 70%. Ok, now lets do a little math…

Just last week the MPAA claimed that New York City was responsible for 40% of Pirated movies. Soooooo…. according to these liars, Canada and New York City alone are responsible for 110% of pirated movies. That means EVER SINGLE PIRATED MOVIE comes from Canada and New York city PLUS 10% more.

Wow… I guess all those nasty rumors about pirated movies in Asia, South America, Los Angeles, Chicago and everywhere else on the planet were all wrong. Yup… every single pirated movie either comes from New York City or Canada. Do you have to have any education to work for one of the MPAA companies?

They’re also LYING to people about the rules in Canada about camcorders. They are claiming (and a bunch of other movie websites have bought into it) that in Canada you’re ALLOWED to bring camcorders into theaters. WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG. Just the other day when Doug and I went to see Spider-Man 3, there is a BIG sign on the first door that says “All personal bags are subject to being searched when you enter the premises.” There are warning signs all over the place warning about brining recording devices into theaters. Warner Bros. lying through their teether and making it sound like you can show up to the movie theater with a big video camera and you’re allowed in.

In Canada, you are NOT allowed to bring recording devices into theaters. If you do, your gear can be confiscated, you are thrown out, and you can be fined. It is illegal. HOWEVER… like in some states in the US, you can’t go to jail for having a camera on you in the theater. And the MPAA is wanting Canada to make it a jailable offense.

For the MPAA and Warner Bros. to lie to the public and make it sound like there are no rules about camcorders in theaters in Canada is despicable. Add on top of that their contradictory and deceptive “numbers” that they pull out of their ass. What a bunch of tyrants.

  1. Maybe there’s a NYC in Canada. Or maybe MPAA just think it’s in Canada.

Or they pull numbers from their ass and are making it all up.

    Nah.

  2. Canada, crime capitol of the World. Followed by the the New York crime guild. Canada, when will you repent your heathen ways?

Seriously, what are the facts behind WB allegations? Based on what study? What finacial report? Who’s the author of this charge?

  3. Well apparently in Canada, people live in igloos and dodge hockey pucks all day. Why wouldn’t they let people bring camcorders into the theaters? I’m surprised that there are any theaters, in the first place. It makes perfect sense to me. Just ask Bob from Canada.

  4. Hey John, I agree with you that this is a load of shit, but i don’t think it’s actually ‘illegal’ to bring in a camcorder.

I run a theater and me & my staff confiscate bags, cameras & such all the time. They’re just not allowed in the theater, period. There are customers who bitch about it, and tell me (or my staff) that there’s no law that says they can’t bring a bag in. BUT, since a theater is a private business, I have the right to refuse admittance to anyone I want (except obviously on human-rights issues).

I can’t force anyone to allow me to search their bag, if they don’t want me to. Therefore I just tell them “That’s fine, please get a refund at the box-office & leave the theater then”. They either leave the premises, or allow me to search the bag in question. Either way is fine with me.

As far as I know, that’s how most theatres operate, and that’s the way it should be.

What’s silly about WB, the MPAA, and Fox (a few months back), is that they brag about having such advanced tactics to curb piracy (ie, the red dots on the prints is one example), but at the same time bitch about not being able to anything about it. Seriously, they probably know which theatres bootlegs are actually coming from, and should therefore deal with them, not the government! I’m also positive that Canada is not the ‘hotbed’ of international film piracy they say it is either.

Most, if not all, theatres are vigilant to a fault when it comes to camcorder issues, because of one big reason. We don’t want to piss off the distributors. If we do, they won’t give us their next big film. They’ll yank a film out of a theatre faster than I can please a woman if they think something fishy is going on with that theatre.

This is all a political situation as opposed to an actual concerted effort in dealing with piracy. I was watching CBC news last night & a reporter brought up a point which I didn’t think of. The real issue for the studio is the Asian & European markets. The MPAA is trying to deal with their governments about film piracy but in order to get them to do what they want, they also have to look like they’re doing everything possible in North America as well.
