Superman Returns Shatters IMAX Records

Superman Returns is doing great business at the boxoffice, no questions there.¬† But it’s not doing SUPERMAN numbers and the studio folks have to be a little disappointed.¬† It’s already well past the $100 million dollar mark.

On the positive side, it looks like the Superman in IMAX experiment has gone over like gangbusters.  The folks at Hollywood North give us this:

An IMAX 3D Experience contributed $6.83 million, representing a record seven-day per-screen average of $89,804. The film shattered every opening week record for an IMAX Hollywood simultaneous release, playing to sell-out crowds and strong audience satisfaction.

I still haven’t had a chance to get out and see this at the IMAX yet, but lots of Movie Blog readers have emailed me to tell me the experience is just amazing. I can’t wait.

  1. Went by a local AMC today to kill time waiting for some car work, and believe it or not, Superman Returns has left. Couldn’t believe it. Don’t get me wrong…I’m still not that interested in it, but I couldn’t believe they wouldn’t keep it at least a month. Instead, they have Pirates running every 30 minutes and a few other stragglers hanging around.

  2. I thought it was cool, but as I stated in my review, I’m glad the whole thing wasn’t in 3-D. It was a bit distracting and to be honest, not perfect. Four 5-minute segments are given in 3-D. Only two are really eye-popping.

The seer size of the screen however, makes paying double price worth it.

  3. I saw it on IMAX 3D on opening night and as a gimmick it was OK… nothing great though. To be honest I’m not a Superman fan and went to the movie just for the 3D Imax experince, but I think it was more of distraction away from the real movie because you’d have to put on glasses for 5 minutes, then take them off. …wait 30 minutes… put on glasees for 5 minutes- rinse and repeat. If the whole movie was in 3d maybe it would have been better…

$0.02 -Take it or leave it.

  4. I saw it. Talk about a totally incredible experience. It’s a shame though that they werent able to put the entire film into 3d. Just segments of it. Seeing a regular movie in IMAX is cool, but in 3d, its just absolutely incredible. If they could adapt this technology to standard theatres, we’d finally have a reason to go back to the movies again! Seeing Superman in IMAX3d and in DLP digital was like day and night. The 3d version was like a totally different movie. I was less than enthused seeing it in a conventional digital projection theatre, but after IMAX i wanted to see it again and again.

Imax 3d is definetly the future of film. Im glad Cameron is adopting it for his newest 2 movies.

  5. I have to make an expensive pilgrimage to London just to see it in 3D but it’s gonna be worth it. Trust me, Pirates 2 will fade after this week and Supes will still be playing…….if only on IMAX.

You remember The Polar Express? It was deemed a flop after opening weekend but people kept going to see it on IMAX. Now they play it every Christmas.
