Finally, A synopsis for M. Night Shyamalan’s “After Earth”

Will Smith teamed with his son Jaden and director M. Night Shyamalan for the proposed Sci-Fi epic film “After Earth”. That’s about all we’ve known about the film with the exception of incessent reminders from readers that M. Night is not the type of director expected to team with Smith on such a high profile project. In fact the two of them in the same sentence still makes me do a double take in wonder as to whether Smith’s casting agent made some horrible horrible mistake. Either way we have some more insight into this film because in preparation for making an appearance at Comic-Con the powers that be have released a synopsis/description of the film for ingestion by the masses:

“In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.”

Sounds intersting enough and seems like a nice role reversal in relation to the last film in which the father and son Smith’s teamed in a film in “The Pursuit of Happyness” and also gives the impression that maybe Mr. Smith may not be the central character this time around. I like Jaden and I like how Will is attempting to establish a film career for his son early on and I can’t wait to find out more if only for his sake.

Will this finally be the film in which I can once again say positive things about an M. Night Shyamalan film? It’s been an awfully long time since ‘Signs’ was released…
