Big week for movies, but not so big a dent in my wallet. Let’s check what’s coming out on retail shelves today:
Avatar: Special Edition – Check out our Review
Reborn in his avatar form, Jake can walk again. He is given a mission to infiltrate the Na’vi, who have become a major obstacle to mining the precious ore. But a beautiful Na’vi female, Neytiri, saves Jake’s life, and this changes everything. Jake is taken in by her clan, and learns to become one of them, which involves many tests and adventures. As Jake’s relationship with his reluctant teacher Neytiri deepens, he learns to respect the Na’vi way and finally takes his place among them. Soon he will face the ultimate test as he leads them in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world.
Loved the film for its visuals and didn’t mind the somewhat predictable storyline. This is the version I was waiting for, and why I didn’t buy the Earth Day release that lacked the special features found on this collection. Buying this for sure.
The Last Airbender
Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Four nations tied by destiny when the Fire Nation launches a brutal war against the others. A century has passed with no hope in sight to change the path of this destruction. Caught between combat and courage, Aang (Noah Ringer) discovers he is the lone Avatar with the power to manipulate all four elements. Aang teams with Katara (Nicola Peltz), a Waterbender, and her brother, Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), to restore balance to their war-torn world. But can he master his bending skills and become the hero he needs to be before it is too late?
I didn’t hate this as much as some did, and while not a direct page by page adaptation of the animated series, it was ok. The kids liked it. Probably going to be a Christmas present for them.
Cats and Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Gallore
In the eternal battle between cats and dogs, one crazed feline has just taken things a paw too far.
Kitty Galore, a former elite agent for spy organization MEOWS, has gone rogue. In 48 hours, she plans to unleash a diabolical device designed to not only bring her canine enemies to heel but take down her former kitty comrades and make the world her scratching post.
Faced with this immediate and unprecedented threat, cats and dogs will be forced to work together for the first time in history in an unlikely alliance to save themselves—and their beloved humans—from global cat-astrophe.
I wasted more time typing out the synopsis than I did considering going to this. And I copied and pasted it from the press release. Pass.
Lottery Ticket
Kevin Carson (Bow Wow) a young man living in the projects, is just an ordinary guy… until he wins $370 million in the Mondo Millions Lottery. That’s the good news.
The bad news is, the lottery claim office is closed for the long Fourth of July weekend, so, before he can collect his prize, Kevin is going to have to figure out how to keep a lid on his good fortune and survive the next three days.
Looks like a cute film and will likely get rented.
A Christmas Carol
Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) begins the Christmas holiday with his usual miserly contempt, barking at his faithful clerk (Gary Oldman) and his cheery nephew (Colin Firth). But when the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come take him on an eye-opening journey revealing truths Old Scrooge is reluctant to face, he must open his heart to undo years of ill will before it’s too late.
Maybe it was deadeye Zemeckis’ animation (only a little dead this time – he is getting better), or that there are just TOO many adaptations of this classic tale. Never bothered. Scrooged is the only Christmas Carol film I watch now. Maybe Muppets Christmas Carol.
The Kids are All Right
Two teenaged children conceived by artificial insemination get the notion to seek out their birth father and introduce him into the family life that their two mothers have built for them. Once the donor is found, the household will never be the same, as family ties are defined, re-defined, and then re-re-defined.
If only to see the infectious Mia Wasikowska again. I will rent this for sure.

I picked up Antichrist and Night of the Hunter, last night. So good!
I will definitely be getting the special edition of Avatar. I’m just glad I saved my money for this one. The Last Airbender was just plain terrible. I hope Shayamalan will get out of his slump.
