Tom Cruise wanted for Rock of Ages

Tom Cruise is being courted for a supporting role in the movie adaptation of the 80s rock opera Rock of Ages.

Moviefone says:

Adam Shankman (‘Hairspray’) was hired to direct the adaptation of the Broadway musical about the romantic tribulations of a couple who meet and fall in love at a Hollywood club in the 1980s. Much big-hair music and mayhem ensue, accompanied by tunes some of us would rather forget. Shankman thinks of the musical as “‘Mama Mia!’ for dudes,’ which should either excite or alarm you.

I could see Cruise giving this suitable nod to the 80s while almost reprising his barman poet role from Cocktail. And maybe a little bit of his bar serenade from Top Gun.

  1. When I saw this, I could not help but laugh. Tom Cruise played some amazing roles in some of the best movies ever made, but I am struggling to picture him as an 80’s rocker in a musical. His more serious roles in; Born on the Fourth of July, The Last Samurai, and War of the Worlds, were really captivating and well executed performances. However, I don’t think he has the ability to throw down a powerful role in a musical. The only way they are going to be able to get this to launch is to get him to rock out to “Danger Zone” from “Top Gun” and then call it a comedy.
