Warner Brothers and DC form DC Entertainment Inc

DC and Warner Brothers take yet another step in the right direction with the announcement of their new media arm DC Entertainment Inc!

First Showing shares:

Warner Bros. Entertainment as created a brand-spankin’-new company, dubbed DC Entertainment Inc., that will “fully realize the power and value of the DC Comics brand and characters across all media and platforms.” Or so the press release says. DC Entertainment is to be run by Diane Nelson, former president of Warner Premiere (the studio’s direct-to-video arm) that cranked out quite a few movies based on DC properties.

One of the realities of seeing more of our favourite Marvel properties to the big screen than DC ones has simply been that Marvel now has its own Studio dedicated to the adaptation of their films on top of the existing studios who have the rights to some of the other more popular properties.

DC, owned by WB had its titles in competition with the flood of other films WB has in consideration. So while Marvel just has to decide which of its properties to do next, DC had to justify the potential of a Wonder Woman film in the same ring as 17 Again and the Informant.

For every Final Destination taking up Warner Brothers coffers, a DC property does not get made. Now that WB has created its own DC branch of the WB trade, they will have their own dedicated resources and budgets to create whatever they see fit.

This could bring a tidal wave of new properties from DC to the big screen. Personally I hope to see Flash, Wonder Woman and Green Arrow. They were always among my favourites.

What mainstream DC title would you like to see??

  1. Sandman and 100 Bullets would be awesome. Someone said Catwoman. That could work in the next Batman if it happens. Nolan could have Catwoman villian/love interest and Harley Quinn. That could be a great film I believe.

But all in all this is good news for DC

I disagree, Rodney. You specifically say Final Destination, so we’ll take a look at that specifically. Like or despise that franchise, it makes its eh, blood money. Especially in the last two weeks (for better or worse…I don’t want to think FD5 or anything…but they’ll find a crazy way). They are produced on modest to low budgets, and, while New Line (slowly dissolving) is owned by WB, the FD films are still under the NL banner, even if they are under WB.

Generally I cannot put the blame on that limping franchise any more than I could put the blame on Harry Potter. Or the last Terminator film. It is impossible to say what film or series of films “takes away” from a possible DC property from being produced. I say it takes nothing away. Would we rather have WB have canceled Terminator Salvation and Final Destination (4) so the ill-fated JLA Mortal could come to pass?

I’m curious Rodney. What WB film stopped V For Vendetta or Constintine (Hellblazer) from getting made? What film stopped Jonah Hex? Is Green Lantern having trouble from WB right now because of The Hobbit? What if Meg finally gets off the ground? Will the shark be Superman’s next foe, or will it be Chris Tucker’s paycheck for Rush Hour 4?

I would like to see the Sandman or Sgt. Rock, projects long in development limbo, finally come to pass. Then there are my personal favorites, in order:

1- ENEMY ACE (well, you knew that already)

    2- Plastic Man

    3- House Of Mystery

    4- 100 Bullets

    5- Hawkworld/Hawkman

  3. I’d love to see Deathstroke The Terminator, Chain Gang War , Hitman and Vigilante be made into movie franchises. I’m very glad that Green Lantern’s being made into a live action flick soon, although I find Ryan Reynolds to be a little jokey to be Hal Jordan.. Let’s see how he does in the movie. It’s great that DC is getting organized to be in the same realm as Marvel, although Marvel’s got tons of money now that it has being bought out by Disney.

    1. I always thought Reynolds was hokey too, but watching Adventureland and see him a little more serious changed my mind completely. Probably the best thing in Smokin Aces as well. I think he can pull it off.

  4. DC Comics is to DreamWorks Animation what Pixar is to Marvel – they tend to be perceived as second filler, but they still happen to own the highest grossing movie of all time within their genre (something people always tend to forget)… Dark Knight & Shrek 2!

  5. I’d like to see Superman fight something other than his allergy to kryptonite. I would love to see a movie about The Flash. After that I can’t think of any other “mainstream” characters I’d like to see. They already have GL in the works and it looks like Green Arrow is on his way. So maybe Martian Manhunter or Captain Marvel? There are loads of sub-mainstream Characters I would be interested in, but I doubt they would make a lot of money.

  6. I’d love to see a Supergirl remake. Maybe we can get a Steel remake too. A remake w/o 7 foot tall basketball stars. I would also love to see a Teen Titans movie with Deathstroke as the villain.

  7. I’m dying to see Green Arrow, The Flash, Superman, Suicide Squad, Aquaman and Plastic Man (personal favorite) make it onto the screen.

Villains I’m dying to see: Brainiac, Black Manta, Gorilla Grodd and Despero (personal favorite).
