Green Lantern Rumours and Reality

With the roller coaster casting of Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern hitting us late last week, we start to wonder what is next for the Emerald Knight. Well thanks to the UGO blog we have a list of reported facts, and rallied rumours about who or what we might see in Green Lantern:

Confirmed:

* Ryan Reynolds will be playing Green Lantern/Hal Jordan.
* Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) is set to direct. (Empire)
* Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, and Marc Guggenheim are scripting the film, with Guggenheim handling the latest drafts. (Sci-Fi Wire)
* The Hal Jordan origin story will encompass ideas and details from multiple fan favorite Green Lantern story arcs. (MTV) (Comingsoon.net)
* The film will introduce a new Green Lantern to the Corps that has never been in the comics. (MTV)
* The film will be released on June 17, 2011.

Unconfirmed:

* Clark Kent, could have a cameo and Kilowog is expected to be in the film, as well as others, but Guggenheim says that nothing is final till it is filmed. (MTV)
* Sinestro is expected to appear in the film, but there is no confirmation.
* The lead villain may be Legion, based on the 90s Green Lantern origin retelling, “Emerald Dawn”.

I think the most interesting confirmed details is that we WILL see the Green Lantern Corp in some way (though rumours about which characters we might see – yay Killowog, and that one of the characters will be entirely new for the movie franchise.

Some might complain that a non-canon character should not be introduced as plot and though I sympathize with where those sentiments are coming from, if they introduce a new character in the comics (really looking foward to reading GL Darkest Night) we don’t bat an eyelash, but if they try to introduce someone new in a film its an outrage? Actually I really like the idea. But with all things, a new character could be a hit or a miss.

Personally I would LOVE to see Sinestro (who is a former Corp member, so its possible they will lead up to him) as it seems he is the perfect fit for an opposition.

Other news recently that a Superman movie might be closer than expected might have WB scampering to cast a new Superman (or just rehire the very eager Brandon Routh) so a cameo appearance of Clark Kent would be a nice fan touch.

  1. Sounds really good to me so far.

Although the idea of Ryan Reynolds playing the Green Lantern still has to grow on me a bit more. Heck, I’m still having a bit of a problem with him as Deadpool even, I suppose it can work. He is a funny guy and so is Deadpool, he just doesn’t seem much else like Deadpool. I mean it could definitely be worse. However I don’t want him to come off as comical as the Green Lantern.

The 3 writers they got seems like they can all bring a wide spectrum of good story telling to the script. I just love how one of them wrote Heroes episodes and they all seem to have some good work under their belts. Not to mention the awesome director. Casino Royal is one of the best action movies EVER!

Can’t wait to see who they do confirm who the main villain is going to be.

Batman and Green Lantern have always been my fav DC heroes and besides Superman, my 3rd fav, that’s pretty much it. And they were all 3 awesome in the JLA cartoon series that came on a few years back. I loved the Teen Titans TV series as well. So far this movie is shaping up to be a good thing.

I don’t know if it’ll get up there with the new Batman movies, in terms of awesomeness, but it just might get pretty close, just in a different way?

  2. I don’t think a new GL Corps character made for the film alone isn’t a bad thing. They then could kill him off and no comics fan would be terribly upset as opposed to “You just killed off Kyle Rayner you stupid toads! How dare you insult the fans, damn you!!!”,,,

    On the flip side…

Let’s say the new character doesn’t buy the farm. The character would get some interest…and…bingo–! Guess who shows up in the comics? Yep, you guessed it. That character. Why? Because he’s now fair game. Heck, he (she?) could be even killed off AND resurrected in a comic or character related novel. Marvel has done it before in the past, why can’t DC?

As for the GL adversary, Sinestro or Legion? No matter. Either one will be just fine. Heck, Star Sapphire or The Controllers would even do. Just as long as it’s not like Supeyman and has to face off against evil mastermind Lex Luthor for the thousandth time.

Speaking of which, I wouldn’t mind a Supey nod at all. Supey does not have to show up, but there could be a small tip of the hat like Superman Returns did Batman. (a brief onscreen but unspoken mention of Gotham City)

Here’s how I might do it…it’s been said up and down it’s all rumor. Film comes out. Closing credits, Green Lantern flies over the earth. He gives a light frown as a small figure in blue tights and a red cape lightly waves to him some distance away.

  3. This can one of two ways.
1.) would be bad ass beams of energy from the ring Green Latern
    and hopefully not..
2.) Green Lantern that creates giant punching gloves with his ring.
I really hope it does well, because I would love to see Marvel do a Nova movie. If you have not read Nova lately, its one of the top 5 books coming out of Marvel right now.

    1. Nova is not a Top5 book. You might like it, but its not on their highest sales list by a LONG shot.

Diamond has it listed at #75 overall last month (all publishers they carry), and that puts it about 50 Marvel titles above it. Sorry.

The very premise of Green Lantern was that he could shape the Energy beams from his ring into anything his imagination could produce. Of course he is going to make a giant fist or wall or scoop or whatever.

      Its not a gun.

  4. The script kinda sounds all over the place from your descriptions. This is the origin story so I dont think you have to try and shove everything in there at once. Just write a good dramatic script and people will watch it. Look at the Iron Man film, his villain was total crap and it was hella successful movie anyway.

  5. Ryan Reynolds isn’t a Hal Jordan type to me. They should use him for Kyle Rayner he fits that mold better. I just don’t know about Ryan and i love him as an actor. I like the Nines and i have seen him serious but to me no Hal Jordan.

    1. I 100% agree with Roman

I mean, the Corps will be in this movie right? So theyll have 5 green lanterns (or 4?) so heres my lineup (well, what i think would be cool…prolly wont happen)

      Hal Jordan- Mark Whalberg
      Kyle Rayner- Ryan Reynolds
      Jon Stewart- Tyreese Gibson
      Gardner whatshisface- Chris Pine
      Kilwog like Rodney mentioned
And that guy thta looks like a Lizard

Does anyone know the Lizards name? I forgot..but there was a lizard…

  6. The Batman animated TV show introduced Harley Quinn and she is now a staple in the comic universe. The X-men film gave Rogue a real name which is now used in the comics. Adding new characters/ideas in films happens and the comics usually adapt with them.

  7. ok Sinestro may be in it but dont expect him to be the bad guy at least not at first as in the comics he was part of the green lantern corp and was friends with hal then got tired of been overlooked and went evil

    1. The current storyline arc introduced this summer is BLACKEST Night. Jackie is correct.

The traditional Green Lantern motto (originally spoken to activate the Lantern’s charging unit for his ring) was adjusted to remove the original reference of blackest night to the newer version of “darkest” night.

But the Story Arc remains Blackest Night as it deals with the Black Lanterns.

    1. Yeah but dude, they can introduce them

I mean, people only know about Sinestro- and Sinestro is cool, but not THAT cool

If this movie has Legion or any of these characters^^ it would be so awesome. In my opinion, that is

I mean- this movie IS based off the comic books, and all of these characters where in the comic books, so i say they take advantage of that and make a really badass movie with the best characters theyve got.

Ill be happy just with Sinestro and Legion, i doubt these guys^^^ will be in it. Its too good.

    2. not everone reads the comics, and the studio’s always have to take that into consideration and try to make the movies accessible to everyone.

    3. That means nothing.

Most people know nothing about Hal Jordan or his villains, they dont know who Sinestro is

I can assure you a very low percentage of people knew who the Iron Monger, Silver Surfer or Toad were before those movies came out…and im sure most dont care and forgot who Toad or Pyro are

Appart from people that read the comics

    4. Joe, you are proving that you have never read the comics either.

      Sinestro is GL’s nemesis.

And the XMen villain is SINISTER. Not the same guy. Not even the same comic book universe.

    5. The studios are going to bank on something familiar. This is why so many remakes and adaptations happen to begin with.

You can count on them to do something WELL KNOWN with a well known franchise. Green Lantern? If you know anything at all about him, then you know Sinestro and Legion. I have no doubt one or the other will be the villain over some complete unknowns like you are suggesting.

  8. YES! YES!!!!!! YES!!!

Okay, i want the Sinestro Corps SO BADLY!

Of course its composed of like 30 villains but its still badass

Legions gonna be in it!? WOW!

I predicted already that Sinestro would be on it in another web site

Okay this is the first time in my life ive been 100% satisfied with the villains in a superhero movie.
Lets just hope they dont introduce any stupid new characters

Omg best news in a while
