Deadpool Told me he is Breaking the Fourth Wall

The best part of X-Men Origins Origins for me was Wade Wilson. Notice I didn’t say Deadpool. WADE WILSON!!

Ryan Reynolds hit that so hard that the comic book character got a bruise. And now that he seems to be beind the whold direction of the Deadpool spinoff movie, we hear its headed in a good direction. The one looming question has always been whether the character would follow his comic book quirk of breaking the fourth wall.

We’ve heard a lot about where the story might go and other ideas from Reynolds, but one point he hasn’t addressed yet is if Wade Wilson will break the “fourth wall” as he has done in the comics. “Break the fourth wall? Oh yeah, he’s got to. I want to see him break the Great Wall,” Reynolds told Empire today. And as for his decapitated head at the end of Wolverine, well, “that we won’t speak of.”

It seems that a Deadpool movie would be an easy one to make since its already clear that all they have to do is write down every concept attached to the Deadpool name used in X-Men Origins.

And do the opposite.

And it looks like that is what she is trying to do. Yay!

  1. Will this even be part of Fox’s X-universe? They could just make a stand alone movie with no ties to any of the previous x-movies.

Wolverine:origins was a complete waste of a lot of characters, and if they want to keep this movie in that universe they could just change it so that “Deadpool” was another mutant and not Wade. Healing factor, optic blast, teleportation, retracable blades(?); he only had those powers, and was supposed to be a pool of all of the mutants that they had captured? They’ll say it was mimic, and that will free up Wade to become the reall deadpool.

    1. just wishfull thinking. Hopefully they take their time and not rush anything, and this movie could be just as good as the first two x-men movies.

  2. from my understanding Micho, (and i read Deadpool comics religiously) breaking the 4th wall is when a character acknowledges that they are in a comic (or movie). it can be them looking at the ‘camera’ or explaining how everything will be alright and they won’t get killed because they ‘are the main character in the comic’ (i believe deadpool has said that one before) so its pretty amusing. although im not sure how it’ll work in a movie, i think i’d rather him just be a smartass to everyone in the movie like in origins

  3. Ok, for reals, what the hell does breaking the fourth wall mean…Can someone break that down for me in Barnet terms!!! I wikipedia’d it and i dont get it!!! And also explain to me why it would make a difference in the movie too!!!

    1. The “Fourth Wall” refers to a stage set like a house. We view the tv show or movie looking at a room with three walls, but the actors don’t acknowlege that there is no fourth wall. We are viewing the show as an audience from that wall.

If a character acknowledges the audience (with a comment or interaction) he breaks the illusion that there is a fourth wall.

In short, when a character talks to an audience that isn’t supposed to be there, its called Breaking the Fourth Wall.

  4. It’s great to hear that Deadpool/ Wade Wilson will be breaking the fourth wall in the film. Now I wonder if Reynolds will also put on the mask? I have a feeling that there will be little air time of seeing Deadpool with his mask on. And who would be the his villan/ rival? I don’t believe that he has a true arch nemesis, just lots of enemies that want to see him dead. Maybe they will have Typhoid Mary or T-Tay in there.

  5. if you waited until the end of the credits for Xmen Origins, you would have seen that Deadpool (uHEM! correction WADE WILSON’S) arm comes out of the rubble and touches his severed head and his eyes open and the he puts his finger over his mouth and says “shhhh” and the movie ends….so yea he came back to life like he always does in the comics.

And that whole 4th Wall bullshit is NOT that fuckin important. Its kinda fuckin stupid actually. what works in a comic book is definitely not always gonna work on scree. That’s why you psycho fans don’t always get every lil detail that you want or else a LOT of movies would SUCK.

  6. The best part of X-Men Origins Origins for me was Wade Wilson. Notice I didn’t say Deadpool. WADE WILSON!!

Funny, Deadpool was never in Xmen Origins.

    1. The action figure of Weapon XI was called Deadpool and Stryker calls him Deadpool.

I know it wasn’t “Deadpool” which is why I said Wade Wilson. His name was Deadpool, but I dont acknowledge him as the real Deadpool.

    2. Thats good. At least someone knows about Deadpools origins.

Wadw Wilson/Wweapon xi doesnt know what deadpool is and has never been in the deadpool game and wont be until like 2 years after

The whole “calling him deadpool in the movie” thing is obviously to attract people or fans who dont know better. Cash grab, and its obviously bullshit. But whatever, hopefully this turns out good, bring in cable maybe.

And the 4th wall thing sounds very stupid but im sure they can make it so its cool. Deadpool is the only self aware comic book character, why deprive him of his most known factor in the movie? Have him break the 4th wall in a flashback or something./ it can be made right, question is: WILL they make it right

  7. Wolverine was horrible, and what they did to Deadpool was horrible. I don’t trust Fox to get this right. If screwing up Deadpool will earn them more money, then that’s what they’ll do. Reynolds can talk as much as he wants about how it’s gonna be faithful. Jackman talked the same game about the Wolverine movie, but at the end of the day, the actors have no say. Read his quote. He says he WANTS to break the 4th wall, not that he WILL.

    1. There are no writers attached as of yet Kristina. And as most sites are reporting, I am under the impression that Reynolds has creative input on the character for this film.

    2. Okay, but Jackman was the exec producer on Wolverine, wasn’t he? Didn’t he have creative control there, or so he claimed? He may have input, as you say, but the final call isn’t his to make, unfortunately.

  8. There are a couple of ways to break the wall without having to “actually break it”.

    – The story could be told and seen from Wilson’s POV.

    – He could wink at a security camera

    – Like the end of Wolverine (or even Superman The Movie) where the character smiles at the camera (us)

Otherwise, it would not fit in with the X-Men films thus far. If Reynolds is reprising his role (which seems to be the case) then the film is still tied to the X-Men universe.

As far as “prequel” goes, (X Men Origins: Deadpool?) it WILL have a unique advantage over the Wolverine film or even planned Magneto film: it is a character we do not see in the first three X films. Any additional characters may be characters that are not seen in the first three X films. Thus, there is room for surprise and suspense. When you have at least four characters in Wolverine whose fates are seen in the first three films, you know the characters cannot die (Wolverine, Creed, Stryker, Cyclops) in that film.

Also,,,there’s a possiblity that Deadpool could take place “during” the X-films or after, now that Wilson/Deadpool has a healing factor.

If it were up to me, I wouldn’t break the wall at all, except as noted above. Even so, I don’t want to take the audience out of a movie. Some films can get away with it. Others cannot.

    1. Even if “Deadpool” was in the Wolverine movie I think fox will stay clear of the X-Men franchise with this movie. They won’t make it a part of the X-Men saga. It’s going to end up being an entire separate universe like the Punisher.

And I’m afaraid they might even scratch off the Weapon X/ Department H backstory. They’ll want the casual moviegoers to forget it’s the same guy we saw in the Wolverine movie therefore making him break the fourth wall something that is only attributed to the Deadpool movie not the X-Men movie universe.

    2. Shinobi, there is no reason NOT to tie this to the XMen Franchise. The X Movies are all successful, and even Wolverine did modestly well despite the fan reaction.

There would be no point to cast Reynolds if they were going to ignore the current franchise as he is intimately tied to playing the role in that franchise.

    3. I understand Rodney and I hope they do because Deadpool without his ties to Department H would be wrong if they want to keep his origin intact and I want to feel that he could go beat the crap out of Wolverine if he wanted to.

Don’t get me wrong, I hope they will tie it to the X-Men franchise but I also hope they don’t screw it up by making it about anything else than Deadpool himself, that means no stupid unessesary cameos. That’s Fox we are talking about we should not forget that.

The dude is one violent psycho and a foul mouth so it should be R-Rated but that’ll never happen.

    4. The character in the comic is still foul mouthed “Merc with a Mouth” who commits plenty of violence, but the book is not rated Mature or Adult, so I can’t see why a movie has to be.

    5. AGAIN you’re right. It’s just what I would want to see I guess. But if Marvel could sell more comics by putting Deadpool on the MAX brand they would. It’s just, as always, a money thing and it’s unfortunatly how the world works.

Lets just say that I wouldn’T be able to imagine a PG-13 Punisher or Blade BUT I can, and do EASILY imagine a R-Rated Wolverine or Deapool film. Claws and Blades are made for slicing.

  9. They fucked him up so bad in the Wolverine movie (the deadpool part, the Wade part was ok) I couldn’t believe it.

But an origin movie could be the wrong way to go with Deadpool. I’d go with some flashbacks in the psych ward to explain his name and why he is insane but he should be in full psycho Deadpool mode and wearing the suit right from the start.

I want the movie to retain the tagline:
His Madness is his Method. It’d also look good on the poster.

And about the fourth wall, well maybe it’d stick with the second and third personnalities in his head but it wouldn’t bother me either ways.

    1. From what I understand, the character at the end was Weapon XI, not Deadpool. I’ve heard that there is a character in the Deadpool series called Weapon XI that’s supposed to be some sort of… copy or something.

I hope this movie will be good, Ryan Reynolds seems very positive so far!

  10. I hope they just pretend the wolverine movie didnt happen. like they did with the second hulk movie (though i lke eric bana, the movie was the suck, just like wolverine)

And THANK GOD hes breaking fourth wall. this movie will be awsome.

    1. My guess is that they won’t even talk about Wolverine (the movie) in this movie. And if they do it’ll turn out that the character at the end was a clone or something.

  11. ok so i really didnt get into any of the xmen movies even though i seen em….even wolverine had the same issue as the xmen movies…they all seemed completely unrealistic…sure its a comic book movie…but when u make a comic book movie live action i kinda want it to feel like i could imagine it in the real world….with all these flicks it seemed to me like they where always on stage acting….never did i go …oh ya i could see that…its like asian martial arts movies…no one fights like that….even in the movie Ip man….wing chun wasnt and will never be a martial art that is usefull by the mainstream so watching a movie that totally exagerates movements with strings etc just make the physiques of moving look…well fake….i really like ryan reynolds….but making a deadpool movie let alone him the ultimate badguy in the wolvie movie was lame too me….there are so many actual better villians…the whole breaking the 4th wall is something that seems very shallow when fans are jumping at that main aspect of the character…gimme a break….thats a lame character development imo

  12. First!

I just hope this Deadpool movie is better than the Wolverine one. How do you think this movie’s going to be made? As a prequel to WOlverine?

    1. I seriously deleted his last 8 attempts at trying that “First” crap, but since he provided a fake email I was unable to inform him that I was saving him from this ridicule.

      So yeah, Juice? Don’t.

    2. No, that is never an appropriate answer.

Juice was just under the impression that we were AICN or something. We don’t play those games here. We actually discuss movies, not just post comments.
