Good grief I have to watch this documentary. There is a red band (that means NOT SAFE FOR WORK folks) Not Quite Hollywood trailer floating around that Jarred sent to me this morning that is making me pant to see it.
Not Quite Hollywood is a documentary looking at the Ozploitation movies from the 70’s and 80’s (a term given to the wave of films coming out of Australia at the time) and it looks just hilarious. People appearing in the trailer include Quentin Tarantino, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dennis Hopper, George Miller and George Lazenby.

I had the pleasure of seeing this a few months ago, What a great documentary! They do a nice job of presenting the Australian struggle for a cinematic identity. If you’re into movies, you must watch this!

This film makes me wish that Australia would start doing genre films again, rather than crappy “little aussie battler” comedies and boriiiiiing bloody kitchen sink dramas featuring the same group of wanker actors that pop up in every single Australian film/tv series/dog food commercial etc
The thing is though: if we start doing genre films again, would it be ok if we tried to make them, y’know, actually kind of good? This doco has its heart in the right place, but it fails to mention that 95% of the films it showcases are actually, well….quite crap. Funny crap, yes, but still crap. Everyone wants to defend them by saying”its so bad its good” or “the critics just didn’t get it” or “but Tarantino like it!”, but its a pretty weak attitude to have (seriously, can anyone name a single film that Quentin doesnt fukn like?)
Bottom line: this is a fun movie and well worth a look. It does, however,revel in a lot of the crappy z-grade films Australia has produced, rather than show genuine talent, or explain why the Aust film indstry is so completely up the shit at the moment. Surely there are directors down under who can make a decent horror, fantasy, or sci-fi movie? It kills me that a so many countries around us like korea, Japan, Thailand, and New Zealand are pumping out gold while we, more often than not, are pumping out shit with lead characters named “crocodile”
