Marvel Delays Thor and Avengers

Marvel has had a plan. This plan has been to the satisfaction of comic book readers and movie fans a like. All of their movies are tied one to another as to create a unified universe of characters, all leading up to the release of the Avengers. The plan hasn’t changed, but the release schedule of the films have been pushed back about a year.

Latino Review

“This new schedule strongly sequences Marvel’s movie debut dates, big screen character introductions and momentum. It maximizes the visibility of our single character-focused films, leading to the highly anticipated release of the multi-character ‘The Avengers’ film in 2012,” said David Maisel, Chairman, Marvel Studios.

I am of mixed emotions over this. I always thought the release schedule was ambitious, and I was really looking forward to seeing them. However with movies coming out next year that don’t even have completed scripts or casting, I wondered how they were going to do it.

So as disappointed as I am to hear these are being delayed, I am at least encouraged that they are taking their time to get it right and give themselves some elbow room. I would hate for them to accept a casting based solely on availablility due to their tight schedule. This also gives them room for production concerns as well.

  1. i know this is a little off topic but, ne one remember The Guyver, i think this movie should be rebooted, with nowadays CGI, this movie should look better, just my opinion

    P.S., vote quimby

  2. I also have a dream of one day seeing a martian manhunter movie, green arrow and wonder woman

because they CAN be done and done right

    Fuck teen titans.

  3. I weep at the sight of this chart..its so organized and i wish there was one that read thus:

    Green Lantern: 2010
    Flash: 2011
    Superman: Unleashed 2011
    Aquaman: 2012
    Batman 3: 2013
    Wonder Woman: 2014
    JLA: 2014

  4. Well, I’m not shocked. This may give some time to the long planned Ant-Man film as well, or room for Incred Hulk 2. But it does give breathing space for First Avenger Cap’n America.

It is a shame Rothman is rebooting franchises just to reboot/remake them instead of giving the rights back to Marvel if nothing more is being done with them (this also does not bode well for The Silver Surfer spinoff). At least the X-Men films/related films are safe for the moment.

I would much rather recast myself where needed and make new film (sequels) to DD and the FF. Not every “restart/reboot” works. Just ask Lionsgate when they restarted Punisher.

  5. A tipster at AICN says that the pushback was done for financial reasons and to give Jon Favreau the time he needs to direct the Avengers as well.

    per AICN:
“-Avengers is delayed a year because of financing issues but also because the plan is for Favreau to helm it. Everybody here loves the guy and he wants to do it, but it would have been impossible for him to do before the date change given his Iron Man 2 commitments. Also partly the reason why he agreed to do the Stark sequel on such an accelerated schedule was so he could get given first dibs on this. It would still be a punishing schedule for him, so hes not firmly confirmed yet, but he is certainly the presumptive director at this point.

    – Iron Man starts rehearsals in a few days, which is why the casting is finally coming together so quickly.

-Alexander Skargard is indeed Branagh’s favorite to play Thor as some sites are reporting. If all goes well and it happens then we hope to get Stellan Skarsgard for Odin (though at present Odin is only a very small cameo part in this movie).

-Loki will probably be played by Hartnett, if his pay negotiations work out. All the commentary about him wanting to do a Ledger and play a villain is B.S. though – WE APPROACHED HARTNETT because Branagh’s a big fan of the Othello adaptation O where Hartnett played Iago who is very similar character wise to how he sees Loki.

    – Fox is serious about doing remakes of Daredvil and FF. They have to make new movies with these characters every few years because otherwise the options will revert to us. This point is kinda obvious but Im not sure people realise it –I havent seen anybody pointing it out anywhere. The mood around here is pretty negative about Rothman’s potential to execute these properties properly, (Im sure you know why it might be particularly negative at the moment) but we are all hoping his recent promotion will mean hes kept away from direct control of these movies.”

That all sounds great to me

  6. I actually saw this coming, was wondering how they would make the deadline while still casting people for thor and captain america.

Its a shame that Thor and The avengers got pushed back but it also wouldve been a shame if both turned out to be crap because their schedule was 2 tight and didnt have enough time to get it right.

This might be a good thing, and im looking forward to this whole operation theyre working on.
