Teaser Trailer For John Woo’s Red Cliff

We have a teaser trailer for Red Cliff; a war-riddled period piece from legendary action director John Woo. Thanks to firstshowing for the heads up:

A John Woo directed Chinese war epic is good news in my books. I love films with massive battle scenes, and this film looks to be chock full of them. John Woo has an outstanding eye and ability for action; and I look forward to seeing this one. No word yet on a North American release date but according to IMDB Finland will have the film October 24th followed by the Netherlands with a release date of December 4th 2008.

  1. early word this that is movie will suck. first of all to push for a more romantic angle they have inserted a plot line which really fouls up the story. I am all for artistic licenses but this is equivalent of saying that napoleon and the lord of wellington shared a secret lover and the battle of waterloo was fought over her. And that seems just to be the beginning of the liberties taken. So if you have any knowledge of the historic background at all, which most people won’t, this movie will leave a bad taste in your mouth. So FYI anything beside the people’s names and the fact there was a battle is probably made up.

  2. I returned recently from spending a few months in China and researching the film industry there, and there is a lot of buzz about this movie. Here’s what I know (assuming this is still true):

    1) This is the most expensive film ever produced not just in China, but in all of Asia. It cost around $80-$90 million to make. To put that in perspective, films like “Hero” and “Curse of the Golden Flower” cost $30-$40 million.

    2) Chow Yun-Fat was originally set to star, but had to drop out. He has been replaced by Tony Leung (from Lust, Caution and Infernal Affairs fame).

    3) This is indeed supposed to be split into two parts, with the first part coming out before the Olympics to help promote Chinese history and culture. Hopefully that means a North American release by August!

  3. Red cliff had been making quite a lot of news in China (Taiwan) at it’s production stage! And it’s finally in post production! Its really hard to find a big budget Chinese movie about a real Historical event (quite a lot of the chinese movies that went to Hollywood is quite fictional) Can’t wait to see it! (One other thing that I head is that this film is split into two parts, each parts last about 2 to 3 hours, which is the first for a Chinese Film)
