Marisa Tomei Joins The Wrestler

Tomei
We have news this afternoon that Marisa Tomei has been added to the cast of The Wrestler! Thanks to our friends at cinematical for the heads up!

The Wrestler stars Rourke as an over-the-hill 1980s-era pro wrestler who retires after a heart attack, but then fights his way back into the ring for one last chance at defeating his arch-nemesis. Tomei will play his girlfriend, the stripper, and throughout the film our wrestler will attempt to build a relationship with her son.

This plot is simple, to the point and down right awesome! Mickey Rourke as a washed out 80’s wrestler is going to be a performance of legendary preportions. The 80’s wrestler needs more love, and a movie that celebrates these icons is A-OK with me. Wresters are like rock star carnival workers and so many have had tragic stories. It is an industry that is rife with drama and a film like this was begging to be made.

I can totally see Tomei as a coked-out stripper that is banging a wrester. I think this is great casting all around and it will be interesting to see how this plays out. We will be certain to keep you posted on this developing story.

  1. I’m sorry, but what the fuck happened to this woman? She won the Oscar and promptly fell off the face of the earth. I’ve never been overly impressed with her in anything I’ve seen her in. She was my least favorite thing about Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead.

  2. Just finished reading an October ’07 draft of the screenplay…and honestly, I don’t know if wrestling fans are going to be all that thrilled with the story. As with just about all sports films, at least sports films that actually work on the screen, this isn’t a film about the sport. It’s a film about Life set against the backdrop of pro wrestling. (And we’re not talking about top-flight wrestling, either.) Still, it’s got its moments…
