Beyonce Knowles Cast in ‘Cadillac Records’

Beyonce Knowles has signed on to appear in the ensemble film, ‘Cadillac Records’ as blues singer, Etta James.

Yahoo!News gives us more details:

Beyonce Knowles has signed on to play blues singer Etta James in “Cadillac Records,” a 1950s period film about the founder of Chicago’s Chess Records and his lineup of stars.

The 10-time Grammy winner joins a cast that includes Adrien Brody as Chess Records founder Leonard Chess, Jeffrey Wright as Muddy Waters, Cedric the Entertainer as Willie Dixon, and Columbus Short as Little Walter.

Now this seems like a better fit for Miss Knowles. It was no secret that she was bitter of her losing to ‘Dream Girls’ co-star, Jennifer Hudson last year at the Golden Globes, and some people thought she was “snubbed” for an Academy award nominee. (Somebody should have told her losing 20 pounds for a role doesn’t necessarily guarantee you a nomination.)

I’m not a huge fan of her acting “talents” to be quite honest, (it’s like she can’t do a role unless there’s singing involved) and she will look a lot better if she has people like Jeffrey Wright and Adrien Brody around her in an ensemble film.

However, I’m pretty psyched about this film. It’s been a while since we have seen a GREAT (Dream Girls was mediocre in my opinion) movie about influential R&B. (‘The Five Heartbeats’ is the last I can remember.)

However, those are just my thoughts. What do you think of Beyonce Knowles as an actress?

  1. Just to clear the air.. Beyonce has an AMAZING voice, Jennifer Hudson will never make, not even a quarter of what Beyonce’s made off of her music albums alone. Jennifer has a great Broadway voice, but the biggest thing that is going to happen in her life was Dreamgirls.
Its obvious that Beyonce isn’t going to stand out next to comedian Mike Myers in Goldmember but she didn’t completely suck either. Her part in Fighting Temptations was flawless. The songs, her voice, acting, EVERYTHING was on point.
Of coarse shes going to keep playing roles in movies that have her singing, come on, she has a PHENOMENAL voice. It would be stupid to keep her mouth closed.
I can’t wait to see this movie.

  2. I think beyonce DOES have acting ability, she just need to challenge
herself, and don’t do so many singing roles. do an action movie or something. yeah she’s not a halle when it comes to acting, but i think she apprciates the craft, and that is what counts.

  3. come on, give her a break, if anything beyonce is underrated!!!!

As far as her acting goes, she is not up there with the best and that is plain to see! But she is getting better and i don’t beleive for one minute that she was picked purely for who she is! She is the greatest singer in many many years in my opinion and i think that people just don’t appreciate her. Her acting out of 10:

    Carmen 5
    Goldmember 6
    Fighting temptations 8
    Pink panther 3
    Dreamgirls 7

    thats an average of 58%

and in anyway, she must have some acting ability anyway for you to believe her when she performs musically!

Picking on her for saying ‘kilt’ is stupid, i mean unless there were subtitles it is unlikely that she said that, she said ‘killed’ and it just sounds funny because of her accent!

  4. Yawn. She is a mediocre actress at best and she’s got an obnoxious sense of celebrity entitlement that turns me off big time. Fortunately this film isn’t about Etta James – this is a supporting role. There are other truly solid talents involved.

Oh and they’re going to have to ugly her up a bit to play Etta. A great singer, but not exactly a noted beauty. Maybe that’s why she’s doing it – she thinks she’ll get acting credit for appearing less than glamorous on screen.

  5. i was just playin the part of the casting people and producers. im sure they know shes not the best actress, but shes famous and pretty so she can get people in the seats. and i for one dont mind seeing her…lol

but u make some valid points, but i dont think hollywood wants to take chances pn fresh new young black actresses. its either beyonce or halle these days which is kinda sad.

  6. Hey I feel you Real Chris, however if it were a modeling job I would agree, but it’s a movie with the potential to show a glimpse of a famous black woman, don’t you think they should hire the best actor to act the part rather than a statue? Basically it sort of sounds like you’re saying who cares if she can act, she’s pretty.

  7. hey but she is nice to look at….these producers know shes very attractive and having her name on the poster is a boost in sales a little. shes not a great actress but she does a decent enough job standing there and looking good….

  8. Ugh, she’s not an actress.

While “Goldmember” was her first movie and only her second acting gig ever, but the rumor was that Meyers was so fed up with her on set that she was nearly fired. I’m not against entertainers crossing over into different mediums, but it shouldn’t be forced to capitalize on someone’s celebrity (I blame the studios more than the celebrities — I admit I’d jump at the chance if someone asked me). I know that many people put years into learning and perfecting their craft, but I tend to think that a person either has the potential or not. Beyonce appears to be in the latter group.

  9. While I do like some of the music she makes, I have to say Beyonce is not the most well spoken female to have the spolight. I watched a documentary about Thriller’s 25th anniversary and she said, “Michael kilt it.” I’m sorry, but if you’re a role model for young woman, not to mention young black woman, wouldn’t speaking proper grammar be first and foremost a frontrunner in your interview reply? There is no ‘T’ in killed.

    About the movie…

I don’t think Beyonce has the acting experience to pull it off. They should call Jennifer Hudson, not to mention she has a better voice too.

  10. good point rafa i never understood how being a singer/ entertainer qualifies you to be an actor. more and more im seeing rappers and singers popping up in films merely because they are already famous, i dont think its fair as many of them disappoint and take away from qualified actors

and serena i highly doubt this will be even close to the five heartbeats. and its good to hear that name again i dont think its gotten enough props from mainstream. i like the 5 hour jackson 5 epic too.
