‘The Gate’ Remake in 3-D?

Another horror classic is about to be tarnished, but at least it’s going to be in 3-D!

Bloody-Disgusting gives us this:

The plan is reportedly to shoot the new version in 3-D. No more details were revealed. The original, which starred Stephen Dorff, followed three young children who accidentally release a horde of nasty, pint-sized demons from a hole in a suburban backyard.

As a child, this movie scared the living crap out of me. It dealt with a child’s worst fears and nightmares and brought them to reality in this cult classic 80’s film. (I was always scared an eye was going to be in my hand after watching the flick!) Am I pissed that they’re remaking this film? Of course! However, the 3-D angle intrigues me and I encourage filmmakers to bring back the 3-D effects onscreen. (Especially in horror films!)

So are you guys interested in seeing this obscure horror classic remade?

  1. I have to say… if done well I might check it out; however, when I hear 3-D is involved I instantly assume it will be garbage. This was the first movie that freaked me out as a kid. I had nightmares for a week

  2. oh, one more thing. As long as we’re on the subject of remaking good 1980’s films, hows a remake of The Last Starfighter sound? I think it would be awesome, anyone else?

  3. I love the original too and while news of remakes of some films bother the hell out of me, like The Exorcist, a remake of the Gate with today’s movie F/X and in 3D could really kick ass.

As long as it’s scary as hell, the monsters look real, and the kids involved are in some fucked up situations, if not more fuck up situations then the original, this movie really could be great.

If it’s not, then I’m gonna have to hurt someone. ;)

  4. It would be better if it was The Gate 20 some years later, and they signed Dorff to tell a new batch of kids to throw The Good Book in the pit to shut those demons up for a bit…

I remember seeing this, on video (I missed it in theatres) and had low expectations, but wound up thinking it wasn’t half bad. It was entertaining, the FX for the time were great…the kids were never annoying, and that big boss demon at the end was kind of neat too. Oddly, I never got the DVD, although one does not have too hunt very hard for it. Most folks can get in for dirt cheap ($2-$3) …in checkout lanes…or in Best Buys/Circuit City markdown bargain sections.

The clear cheap clamshell cases wafer thin. You know the ones.

  5. Lol, this makes me want to go find “The Gate” and the “Monster Squad” on DVD. Between those two and “The Goonies” they were my favorite childhood movies.

  6. Hell no…Hollywood should just leave this one alone. For me it would be like them trying to make a “Monster Squad” remake…downright unacceptable!!
