‘Friday the 13th’ remake Writers are Hired

Since the commercial success of Rob Zombie’s re-imagining of Halloween, it was only a matter of time before we heard of other beloved iconic horror movies being remade. Get ready to go back to Camp Crystal Lake horror fiends, because it’s looks like the wait for the new Friday the 13th remake is finally over.

Our good friends at ShockTillYouDrop gives us this:

A reliable tipster phoned in this evening (and this source is 100% solid gold, baby) to tell us Dunes is putting their proposed Friday the 13th on the pre-strike roster with the aim to begin shooting sometime in early 2008. The Dunes team, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, we’ve been told, have also officially locked a new pair of writers to tackle the property…Damian Shannon and Mark Swift.

To be quite honest, I’m not entirely excited about this news. I was never a huge Friday the 13th fan. (Although one of my guilty pleasures is when Jason takes Manhattan) I don’t even know if fans should be excited to see a new and improved Jason just yet. If they’re remaking the first film again, horror fans will know that Jason didn’t turn up until the sequel. It was Jason’s mother (played by Betsy Palmer) that wreaked havoc on the horny teenagers at Camp Crystal Lake in the first film. Will they change the story and the killer? Are you desperately awaiting this remake? More importantly, will Kevin Bacon make a cameo? :P I guess time will tell.

  1. I agree and I can’t say it enough that this is one of those movies, like Halloween, that does not need to be remade. I like Friday the 13th and enjoy Halloween so much more but I do think both are great films, that’s why we still talk about them after all these years. This just goes to show that Hollywood has officially run out of ideas. Watch out, next they will be doing a remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, you wait and see.

Although I will say that if Jason is in this, I really hope they get Kane Hodder back to fill the shoes!

  2. While I think folks might get more milage out of a remake of “My Bloody Valentine” (indeed, one is rumored for 2010), I’d much rather see new horror icons be created/explored.

Yes, it was Jason’s ma who did the killing in 1.
Yes, Jason donned the hockey mask in part 3.
Yes, Jason got hit with freak lightning in 6 and became the unstoppable bogeyman-ghoul.
Yes, Alice Cooper contributed to the soundtracks at one point…

    HOWEVER

Here’s where me, the int’l friends, and, sadly, Serena, part ways. I’m sorry, I must throw down this gauntlet.

    1. The continuity of the Friday the 13th/Jason films is contradictory to each other.

    2. If they are serious about remaking this, the powers that be must piss off the purists.

    See, it’s like this….

    *Jason can ‘team up’ with his mother and/or after being left for dead (drowned) and/or struck by lightning finds these asswiping co-eds have cut ma’s head off now he’s super pissed- he dons the hockey mask in the third act and starts super carnage;

*With each kill and bloodspill, his muscle mass increases by one inch until he becomes 6’8 ans 220 pounds. He should also be covered with worms. One worm even crawls around his face (in a nod to Jason Goes To Hell)

*The machete is slightly jagged and rusty. No such thing as clean neck cutting.

*One chick could have telekenitics, (part 7)

*No Freddy vs Jason vs. Ash vs. Candyman vs. Chucky vs. The Tall Man and his chrome balls

  3. I disagree. Friday the 13th started the slasher file genre. Halloween was more of a stalker/thriller movie, whereas F13 was just a straight out slasher.

That being said, I don’t see any need to remake this movie. At least not under the premise of cashing in on the Halloween remake.

Only do it if you have something original to add. Otherwise, better left untouched.

  4. Fuck Friday the 13th of course they are going to do it with the Jason that we know and furthemore Jason was a second rate Michel imitation be aware im not dising the original because it had a semi original story with Jasons mom however after they relased the sequal it felt like they were just trying to cash in on the Slasher pscho killer genra with im not being stupid I know all movies are made to make money but IF you have to do a horror remake do somthing like Hellrasier I know its only twenty years old but not that many people in the younger age group 16-24 havent seen it and its a consept that hasent been done a 1000 times by a 1000 different people

  5. Plus the Hockey mask took a few movies to be introduced. Depending on whos involved, I dont think they would to it without the iconic Jason in hockey mask, and would rewrite. So pointless.
