Bruckheimer Uncertain Of Another Pirates Film

It looks like we have more back and forth news when it comes to Pirates. Today we learn that according to Bruckheimer, there are no current guarantees. We get the story from IMDB:

Although most analysts were quick to predict that the success of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End virtually guarantees a fourth installment — and star Johnny Depp has indicated that he would be willing to sign on so that he can explore the character of Jack Sparrow further — producer Jerry Bruckheimer sounded noncommittal when asked about expanding the franchise. “We’ve been working on this trilogy for 5 1/2 years, and the latest one was just a monster,” he told today’s (Tuesday) Los Angeles Times. “It’s always about making sure you have a great story with interesting plots, themes and characters. There is a possibility– we’ll see what happens.”

I hope they stop this franchise in its tracks. I also hope they put the breaks to a number of other franchises and give us some fresh goods. In a summer where we are being bombarded with a glut of sequels, they are all losing their appeal, and apparently their quality as well.

Sequels can be great and even necessary if the ongoing story demands to be told. But when the green light for a sequel is based on a business decision and not the love of the story, we cannot be surprised when we are given shit. I hope Bruckheimer does the right thing and focuses on new and exciting projects instead of a bloated waterlogged rotting and yet lucrative series that may never end.
