Tom Cruise As Iron Man?

Despite all of the wild antics and overall “Jack Assiness” that Tom Cruise has got himself involved with, the fact remains that the guy is a solid actor plain and simple (I still think he should have not only been nominated for… but WON best actor last year for his role in Colateral). Well new the word flying around is that Tom could be getting himself suited up as Iron Man.

The good folks over at Cinema Blend give us this:

Tom may be signing up to play the title role in Jon Favreau’s Iron Man. The interesting thing here is that Cruise has long been rumored to be interested in the role, and back in 2004 before Favreau came on board Tom was thought to be a lock for the part. Iron Man never really got going and Cruise’s name fell off the project. But it seems now that Favreau is pushing the thing forward, Cruise is interested again. This of course flies in the face of Favreau’s claim that he wants an unknown for the role, but then he’s not exactly Peter Jackson or Steven Spielberg and is still subject to studio pressure for big name stars.

Personally… I would much rather see a unknown actor in the role… but if it HAS to be a big star name, then perhaps Cruise would be a good choice. The man can certainly act, he has the talent, and the look is pretty close too.

But would it be a good business move? Not sure. If Cruise can start keeping his stupid moronic mouth shut, I think the North American movie going audience is pretty quick to “forgive and forget”, and deep down WANT to love Tom Cruise again. But man… if he keeps going the way he is… then that becomes a totally different story. Then perhaps the wisdom of casting Cruise from a business point of view can become suspect. We’ll see.

  1. The only thing Tom Cruise plays is Tom Cruise, a smug,holier-than-thou prick with a shit-eating grin. That’s why he was so good in Magnolia.

  2. Tom Cruise is the best possible candidate for Iron Man.Yes,he is over opinionated and says things that makes America mad. But,should you really care what Tom Cruises opinions are on Psychiatry and the drugs implemented!?!I mean there is not one actor left today that can beat the man in comparison. The closest I would give to be as good of an actor as Tom Cruise is Denzel Washington. Now he might be his equal if thats even possible!!!Iron Man is a role that allows him to bond with the audience again and see why he is sort of crazy.Because we all are crazy,we allow other people to influence our decisions, taste in close, mates, food, what music we listen to and the movies we see.I say;Stop end the bullshit, let men be men and women be women.Lets stop forcing each other to only watch metrosexual men in big guy acting roles.Lets stop pushing the whining metrosexual actors as tough guys.Tom Cruise can show us in a role like Iron Man that there is a reason fro his torment. That in all of us there is an alcoholic, drug user,or addicted to some other unhealthy self destructive behavior. Its called being human and everyone of us needs to get over ourselves.Watch the damn movie and enjoy it being portrayed by the best instead of settling for
half-witted giggly stupid school girl type actors. That by all rights should not be making movies. As a man I want my action studios to have the balls and cast the right actors for the right parts.Stop settling for less, because the homosexual community as been influencing all of the straight guy actor roles.Keep them on E or the Queer Eye For The Straight Guy types of shows.Stop alloowing them to dictate who should play these roles.I am not paranoid either its true listen to the women on the view bash action movies for men. Then they invite a gay guy on the show to add his comments too. That way they can pick on movies men like and its supposed to be okay.Because they have a male on their show so thats their reasoning.I am a man and I am tired of feeling cheated by the film industry.Stop bashing the movies I love and so do all of the men in this world love as well.We love Rambo,Conan,Mad Max,Rocky,Bloodsport,Out For Blood,Etc…And,so on these movies are an outlet for us.Thats why we watch Boxing,Wrestling,Football,Etc…Because men need an outlet we are violent at heart. So,when we see these films we bond as brothers, friends,Fathers and Sons,we talk about the films and we see them again and again.Bring these types of films back,no more long character development crap and explaing to the audience. If,you don’t know who Superman is or Batman, than you really don’t need to see the movie and more than likely you would’nt see it any ways.Just get to the point and action, fight scenes long ones, make them interesting.Let the bad guys win sometimes so that way we see the heroes figure out what he did wrong and we believe him when he does win.Thank You and I hope you read this and learn something new about men, that we’re still here and we want our movies back!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I’ll chime in – Cruise would be perfect as Tony Stark. I think I posted this already, but Karl Urban (Eomer – LOTR) would be a good choice if they don’t go for an A-lister.

  4. No tom cruise please. He can’t act because he plays the same character all the time…and even thought ironman isn’t a part that would stretch the actor…someone else should get the role. Besides he’s to short…he would look like a midget in a tin can.

  5. Oh, one last thing. Cinemablend’s thoughts are plain out misleading:

” still subject to studio pressure for big name stars.”

You don’t need to go to myspace to know that he really *wouldn’t be*. Marvel Enterprises is footing the bill. They will rely on Paramount only for distribution.

  6. While i disagree with Bixby that myspace crosses the line into Faggotry (although quite a number of users there have profiles that are splashed with clashing colors and other crazy shit) – there are a number of indie filmmakers (and a few established ones such as David Lynch), and quite a mumber of musical artists who also network as well.

I will, however, confirm Favreau’s blog/comments on those Iron Man boards.

BTW, there is another thread where he asks viewers/fans who would they like to see play Stark. It appears the majority favor Jim Caviezel, Gerald Butler, Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Ruffalo and Billy Cudrup…but regardless , there is one name the fans there agree on who should NOT play Stark. It is Tom Cruise.

  7. His personal beliefs and press antics aside, Cruise is not a horrible actor. I have enjoyed most of what I’ve seen him in and think he would be solid in the role.

I just hope it follows the trend of the recent Batman and even spiderman which was more character driven and less about “Look what I can do on my new mac” (George Lucas!)

  8. I would love cruise to play Tony Stark. I think Tom is an amazing actor and could pull the part off very well. If Tom’s name gets attached to the project then this could very well get alot more people intrested in the movie. I think Ironman is Badass and would love to see him blow the shit out of things and get really drunk.

  9. Nope. Favreau squashed this rumor already on his blog–it’s on myspace, for those who dare to cross the line into faggotry. But it’s really, really cool of Favreau to get the fan’s input on the movie.

“Page Six reported that Tom was in some way attached to play Iron Man pending his opinion of the script. As far as I know, there is no truth to this rumor. Before I came onboard, there was some discussion between Marvel and Tom’s people about him playing the role, but my understanding is that that was all before the rights reverted from New Line back to Marvel. This story might be old news. This is all I know.”

  10. Bells are going off in my head. I can see how Tom adds some star power to the project but with all of the negative media attention, I think this could go either way. I agree with everyone else, if he manages to stay somewhat low key for the next little while, the public might forget the incidents of the past frew years but I don’t think it’ll every go away completely. I do hope most of it disappears because this project really deserves to do well. It’s a great story.

  11. To Jon Favreau: PLEASE do NOT sign that jackass (Cruise) to this movie deal. It would be a huge mistake. I personally would have liked War of the Worlds better if he had not been in it. The geek is a veteran actor, no doubt about it, but the guy is over-exposed, overrated, and simply an ass.

Iron Man was my favorite comic hero as a kid and I just can’t see him as Tony Stark.

  12. Well, as much as I hate to admit it, Tom Cruise plays tortured and pained VERY well. Though that is probably because he’s a raving loon.

Stick a moustache on the man, and I can totally see Tony Stark. Though I can GUARANTEE the box office take will be far less with Cruise in the film compared with if he was NOT in the film.

Personally, I know a good deal of people who did not go to see MI:3 simply because he starred in it. Irregardless if it was a pile of shit or not, Cruise was the deciding factor to them. Hell, even to me, the attachment of the name Tom Cruise in a film throws up a bunch of red flags in my mind.

Not for nothing, but I think like Russell Crowe before him, Tom Cruise is suffering the wrath of a public that is just generally tired of him and his off-screen antics.

  13. Collateral really was a great movie. Tom Cruise, Foxx, and Mann. Usually an unknown would be a good way to go. But with Cruise, I still like him, his antics didnt make me like him any less. But I guess that it has many people. Acting wise, he would be great as Tony Stark. I hope he does get this role. Hopefully, we’ll have to see.

  14. Everything about Collateral was over-rated, Cruise, Fox, Mann, and the story. They even pulled out the dying cell phone battery chestnut. And a professional hitman is outdueled by a cabbie? Puh – lease!

Not a big Iron Man fan but if Cruise gets the part then that seals the deal for me. Iron Man gets a BIG pass.
