Star Blazers Movie

Star-Blazers-MovieI think I just wet myself!!!! As a kid, one of my FAVORITE cartoon shows was a North American version of an anime show called “Star Blazers“. In Japan, it was called “Space Battleship Yamato”. I freaking LOVED this show. I can still sing you the theme song if you’d like.

Anyway, the show is set in the future after the earth was bombarded by nuclear attacks from an alien force. Humanity is now forced to live deep underground because of the deadly radiation… but the radiation is getting deeper and deeper, and humanity only has 1 year left before the radiation reaches them. They then get a message from another world saying they have a “cure” for the radiation that will clean up the planet, so they build a mighty space ship from the hull of the old legendary Japanese war ship Yamato to go and get it. The rest is anime deliciousness at its finest!!!! Best anime show EVER!!!

So according to the good folks over at Coming Soon, they’re going to be turning Star Blazers into a live action film!!!! JOY!!!! There is no word yet on the when… but I’ll stand in live for a month before opening day (yeah… I know I’ll be the only one there). Oh my sweet childhood is all coming rushing back to me now. Wave Motion Gun Baby!!!!

  1. So, it’s July 2010…..where’s the live action movie???? I’d think that after Transformers (and now with a Robotech movie) that Starblazers would be a shoe in. Guess not. Any updates???

I’d like to see the following anime become movies.

    Dirty Pair
    Crusher Joe
    Vampire Hunter D

  2. Josh C. Kline now owns the rights to Star Blazers… purchased from Disney who dropped the ball on producing it.

I really would appreciate some news on this… it seems odd that they would announce its go ahead and then stop… again!

  3. Thanks Buster for the scoop on Speed……interesting choice…I think originally when they were talking about a Speed Racer film years ago, the choice at that time was Charlie Sheen…..Anyway, I am also a big sci-fi fan..have been since Star Trek was released in the 60’s….to see Starblazers on the big screen….sweet…wonder who they would cast to play Nova…wow…..more interesting yet…Dr. Sane. See you there.

  4. Speed racer is currently underway… it is in the writing stages and Vince Vaughn has been asked to take the main role of Speed Racer… Source: Scifi.com

I downloaded some episodes from (XXXXXXXX) a while back, but the availability was scarce, and the quality was poor. Sadness followed.

I’m 36… I can still sing the song too… or should I say season 1 song… since it was changed in season 2 Slightly (same tune though).

I will stand with ya in line John… StarBlazers was the single most influencial scifi show to me ever… and my taste for television has held to those standards for over 28 years now… if it ain’t space ships and science fiction, its just the space between commercials.

  5. Yes, and they said they were going to make a Speed Racer movie about 10 years ago too…still waiting…it appears that this will be the same too. I am 45 years old….hope they are released to the big screen before I turn 65.

  6. I really want to know what happened!if i die i’ll never know how they stopped the radioactive meteorites.Did they get the machine to stop the radiation? What happened ?RRRRRRRR

  7. i love it. iwant to see them all ,as a kid i never found out what happened to the earth.as a 34 year old man i wanna know what happened so now maybe i will yeaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. At least ten times a day, I have a fantasy about being asked to write a script for a live action, big-budget, well-promoted cinematic tour-de-force “star blazers” movie; in fact, if possible, I would want to write an 8-hour Sci-Fi Channel extravaganza that touches complete neophytes as deeply as the original show touched me.

In many respects, the show had some elements of Star Trek, and it seems that a certain director in Hollywood may very well have adopted the idea of a superlaser on a space station from the Wave-Motion Engine/Gun combination….but that is mere speculation…..all in all, it was a terrific show that I dearly love!

It looks like I will have to live w/ the labors of another person.

I am so thrilled that Star Blazers is (again!) making it to the big-screen. I bought the script of the mid-90’s Disney version and I was relieved that it never made it. I would rather cherish the memory than know it was….cheapened w/ a sub-par effort.

(Please note that I am quite forgiving of entertainment vehicles; I actually liked SWE1:TPM despite Jar Jar!)

When I was a yougin’ I remember racing home every day to catch the show. Unlike American animation (which I do not seek to criticize, as it was enjoyable to a degree) this show took its audience seriously. It was an adult drama, in a science fiction genre, told in a medium that children could grasp. Ain’t no birdies bein’ chased by coyotes here!

I can only hope that Hollywood treats the material the same respect.

I would see it, even if it does not live up to my (stratospherically) high expectations.

Fire up the Wave Motion Engine!!!

    -PK

  9. Hopefully it will be a better success than the transition of other 70’s classics that were made into feature films.

    Thunderbirds anyone???

Of course it this is a big hit, maybe they will do a good take on Battle of the Planets/GForce/Gotchaman

    Ninja Bird Force Go!!!

  10. Disney has owned the rights to a live action Star Blazers movie for years. I remember one of the first stories on aint it cool news that I read back in 96 was about the upcoming Star Blazers movie. Wonder if its going to happen this time
