Interview: Adelaide Kane talks Devil’s Hand, Reign, and Comic Con

The 40th Annual People's Choice Awards - Arrivals

With her new film The Devil’s Hand releasing on October 10th, I spoke to Adelaide Kane about Devil’s Hand, Reign, and her love for comics.

Jim: Hey Adelaide how’s it going?

Adelaide: I’m good how are you?

Jim: You know, with that name there is no way you could be anything less than Australian. It’s the first thing that struck me. She has to be Australian or that’s a crime is she isn’t!

Adelaide: (Laughs) Definitely.

Jim: The film wasn’t what I was really expecting it to be, what drew you into this role?

Adelaide: Being employed haha? Honestly, you’ve seen the movie and I haven’t. I’ll have to take your word on it. I thought it would be fun. I actually auditioned for the lead character initially. Of course they gave it to the gorgeous Alycia.

Jim: Another Australian may I add.

Adelaide: Yes, another Aussie. When they offered me Ruth. I was like ohh that’s sounds like fun. I can scream at church. You know, sounded like a good time. It was shot in North Carolina, so I was like sure why not? I had a lot of fun shooting in North Carolina.

Jim: You don’t see many Quaker like films, with these cults. What was it like wearing those costumes and the set that looked like something ancient haha?

Adelaide:  I have to say being in Carolina was interesting, like it’s a beautiful, beautiful state but it’s eerie and quiet out there. It’s very still. It’s like secrets are hiding in this creepy part of America, as beautiful as it is. I’ve never seen something as dream-like, and the houses are gorgeous. It’s just the whole state we were living in felt so creepy. It was just miles and miles of forests, the architecture was beautiful. The village we shot in was great, it was really lovely. We were really lucky we got to shoot there.

Jim: Your acting experience has been all over. It’s a credit to you that you been able to do so many different things. You are currently on CW’s Reign, and you started off with Power Rangers didn’t you?

Adelaide: Yeah, that was my first American gig! I worked in entertainment since I was about 6. Primarily modeling and commercials when I was young, then I got into acting seriously when I was 16 with Neighbors which was filmed in Australia. From there Power Rangers when I made my move to the states. Technically I have been only acting in the states for five years, so not that long. Been properly acting coming on eight years now, in terms of entertainment, probably eighteen years. I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to do a bunch of stuff. I’ve done low-budged horror, a web series, theater budget horrors, done thrillers, action-adventury stuff, and Power Rangers which was martial arts and so much fun. Soap stuff. Teen Wolf, which is very stunt focused action show. That was really fun. I really like doing diverse work. It’s just fun trying different things and see what I like best.

Jim: Is there a particular genre that you prefer over others, is there a personal favorite?

Adelaide: Honestly, I don’t have a personal favorite. I have a really short attention span. I get bored really quickly, which is why I wanted to become an actor. Even if you are on a TV show, every episode is different. Every movie, director, and actors are different. Everything is changing, you shoot in different locations and it’s a great world for me that I’m fortunate to be involved in. I’d love to do like a Zoe Saldana’s career lately. She’s like a Sci-Fi queen right now. I’m incredibly jealous. To do stuff like Guardians of the Galaxy, Avatar, any kind of nerdy stuff. I’d love to be an extra on The Avengers film. I really dig comic books, I’d love to be like that. That action-drama-superhero stuff.

Jim:  I can tell you are a huge fan of the superhero and Sci-Fi genre. Funny thing is that I did some research online and I did find a picture, correct me if I’m wrong, of you at Comic-Con dressed as Wonder Woman in 2010?

Adelaide: That was 2009! I was Wonder Girl, I was 19. First ever Comic Con. That will haunt me for the rest of my life!

Jim: Did you go as a fan?

Adelaide: No, I was there as a fan. I go to Comic Con every year that I can. I went this year with my little brother. I went for the show (Reign), but I had an extra day to wander the floor. Me and a girlfriend of mine wandered the floor, bought comics, and I got a sketch from of my favorite artists who illustrates the comic book Sable. That was really exciting. It’s now framed and on my wall. I’m hardcore for sure.

Jim: Is there a difference promoting a show now and having fans come to you, versus just being a fan yourself?

Adelaide: I mean yeah, of course. You get it, every actor has people who they admire, other actors, directors, writers, or musicians or whatever. If you ever met someone that you really admire for their work, you can totally relate. Our fans are very sweet. They are very lovely and excited about the show. It’s fantastic, I love them. They are great and very loyal.

Jim: On a final note, any projects in the works currently for you?

Adelaide: There are a couple short films I’m waiting to come out that I made forever ago. Other than Reign, we are starting to look at scripts now for my hiatus. My hiatus is really short, I’m really keen on doing something on my break now, last year I didn’t do anything and it was not good for me. I got two weeks into my holiday and got bored. So there is nothing coming out that I’m aware of anytime soon.

Jim: Well, TV definitely keeps you busy.

Adelaide: Yeah, I work ten months out of the year. We have to be at work almost every day, so it be tricky to do anything else.

Jim: Thanks for your time and talking to me about your career.

Adelaide: Thank you, have a good one.
