Dominic Monaghan talks The Hobbit Cameo

With The Hobbit still on rocky ground that may or may not belong to New Zealand, Dominic Monaghan who played the Hobbit Meriadoc ‘Merry’ Brandybuck in Lord of the Rings talked about the potential that he and other Hobbit cast might appear in a cameo appearance in the prequel.

WorstPreviews quotes Monaghan:

“We’ve been saying that we’d love to come back as some sort of cameo, or turn up in the background,” he told SFX magazine. “And Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have said that would be a great thing for us to do, but I think they’ve got slightly more important things to deal with before they talk about the four Hobbits doing a cameo.”

While he isn’t saying they WON’T do it, its not something they are worrying about right now.

If this movie ever does manage to get made, I hope if they bother to cameo these characters in the background or something that it is subtle. These players were not even mentioned in The Hobbit, and messing around too much is just asking for trouble.

  1. there is a difference between charater cameos and actor cameos and I believe he is simply talking about actor cameos. I like the campfire storytelling idea too, just have Gandalf show up at the end, Mind Whipe, roll credits.

  2. IMO

I would like this idea if they used the established actors to tell the Tale of Bilbo. Starting the movie as a camp fire tale that Frodo is telling the others around the campfire at night.

Great way to get them in it and have just the small cameo.

    IMO

    1. Considering Bilbo has to tell Frodo about the ring at the beginning of the LOTR trilogy, I don’t think it makes sense for him to be telling them all the story of the ring when they are young.

  3. These characters weren’t even born during the time The Hobbit takes place. Bilbo was 50 years old in The Hobbit. He’s 111 at the start of LOTR. That’s a difference of 61 years. At the start of LOTR, Frodo is oldest of the four hobbits at 33. It could still be cool to have these actors make cameos but they should not be playing the same roles.

  4. As cool as it might sound on paper I really don’t dig the idea of them appearing in the Hobbit since those actors are established in their respective roles.

However:”These players were not even mentioned in The Hobbit, and messing around too much is just asking for trouble.”

I thought that Gimli did have a small part in The Hobbit.

      1. I know he’s not a Hobbit. I was thinking this was talking about more than just the four Hobbits from the LotR trilogy. I misread and was thinking this may be about any of the actors/actresses from the LotR trilogy.

  5. Dom must not have much to do now that Lost ended. Though I can understand how much the trilogy meant to him and the others for them to want to bring the whole gang back.

  6. In my opinion it would be foolish for any of the hobbits to work in these roles again. They are already faced with scarce roles and projects. Didn’t one of them just filled for bankruptcy or something of the sorts? In my opinion it would be a career killer.

    1. Their ability as actors hurt their careers, not portraying Hobbits.

There is no logic in avoiding taking a role in a proven and successful franchise, and there is no connection between being in these films and poor success.

And none of these actors who they are talking about in the cameo are out of work at all. But if they were, he wouldn’t want to turn down ANY role.
